A little over a year ago a dailordasailor reached out on AH looking for some help on planning his first DIY western US hunting trip. I responded and we talked quite a bit, to make a long story short I had an open spot on this years hunt and decided to ask him to accompany my son and I to WY. I told him that it would be easier for us to show him the ropes then try to explain it all. He accepted my offer and we will be meeting him in Casper in a few days. If he enjoys this trip as much as I think that he is going to, he has no idea the way his life is about to change. You see my first western hunting trip was in 1984 and I've been back every year since, I enjoy it so much that it has almost become an addiction. ( who am I kidding, it's a full blown addiction) I'm really looking forward to introducing this young man to hunting in WY and seeing his reaction to hunting on the open prairie versus what he is used to on the east coast, mainly hunting out of a tree stand. Heck where we're going there aren't any trees for miles and miles, this is going to be fun. I can't wait to take him out to one of the back pastures to hunt and explain to him that the pastures are 2 miles wide and 4 miles deep, that usually gets a new guys attention. Oh yeah this is going to be fun!

Nothing like wide open spaces

Have fun.

Your entirety correct. I hunted 20 years straight with some good friends around the Lusk area in Wyoming. Unfortunately the ranch owner sold out to a California tree hugger type and allows no hunting on the ranch. A couple of us are now trying to find a place to hunt but haven’t had the time to go out there looking. I sure miss hunting out there!!!

I had the same thing happen a few years ago with the best ranch I ever had for antelope hunting. No hunting at all there now. Thankfully the antelope are making a good come back in the area I'm hunting now. You could always reach out to the Game & Fish or the local chamber of commerce for help finding a new place to hunt.

Wyoming antelope hunting is pretty much different than any other type of hunting. Can be impossible, or just too easy.
Best of luck!

Thanks! It can be very frustrating indeed but I think that's what makes it so rewarding in the end.

I’m headed to Wyoming one week from today for mule deer with my two teenage girls. Wyoming is great bet for youth hunters. I also have a deer tag of my own but. . . Ladies first!

Just got back from my very first Wyoming pronghorn hunt. You are correct @jduckhunter it is a lot of fun. I hunted west of Casper in in Area 72 and took an excellent buck. Plan to do a report soon. Look forward to reading your report.

Wow what a chance!! This is a dream hunt. I know we get to live a dream hunting Alaska but before I die (hopefully got a lot of years left since im only 28) I want to do a elk hunt!

Elk is on my hit list like many im sure. But as you said, Alaska is most folks dream. Mine included. Assuming I get addicted as I imagine I will, really hoping to take the misses with me next year after antelope.

April 2020 is Africa so that budget limits hunts like Elk for a little bit

Cool congrats, back in the 80's when I first started hunting antelope I started in areas 72 and 73. How did you like Hell's Half Acre?

I lived in Wyoming and Alaska for a total of 16 years. Enjoy it, it doesn’t get much better than that!

I know your going to enjoy every minute of it, hunting with my 2 daughters was always a blast. Especially when they would decide to do all of the cooking and camp chores.

If you get up around Gillette please let me know so we can meet up. "Might" be able to help find a deer if license is in my area.

Thanks Bruce, we have Reg. C gen. licenses. We'll be hunting down close to the Pumpkin Buttes. If time permits we'll look you up.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of fun. Will you guys be staying at a local hotel, or camping?

How difficult is it to get Antelope & Deer tags in Wyoming?

We're camping out sort of, we stay in an old dilapidated house trailer that the rancher doesn't use any more. It's mostly solid yet and has a wood stove in it, not all the comforts of home but close enough. I've resealed the roof a couple of times over the last 30 years and we stay pretty dry, the most important thing is that it keeps the wind off of us. Tags can be a problem depending on where you want to hunt, I suggest buying preference points a while if your considering a hunt in the near future.

Best of luck. I will tell you here in Gillette we have had a VERY wet summer. Been much greener than normal and animals in our immediate area should have as good of horns/antlers as what they will ever have due to great nutrition. Hope to see you.
Bruce
