I clean roughly 20-30 various skulls per year and usually make the plaque or pedestool to go with them. I got a call from a gentleman a while back that wanted a plaque to place his late fathers last buck on. Although I did not clean the skull I was happy to try something new. Just wanted to show you guys another option for skull mounts.
Here's the picture of the cross style he wanted and the finished piece.

It's different,

That is a novel plaque for sure and an interesting set of antlers.

Jody,
I wonder if you can make a large plaque in the shape of Africa? You would have to join several sections of wood no doubt for what I'm thinking of!

The cross pictured above is very interesting!

That's cool. I like it when someone does something unique but still has it look good.

CAustin- I make about 4 a year . Can't believe I don't have a picture of them laying around. Seems like they end up for wildebeest skulls .

Sorry Jody .... I don't know why but I find that kind of morbid .... I do like the idea of the Africa plaque ....sorry my intent is not to offend you .
Glen

G Skinner, not offended at all. I can see where you are coming from. This was a first and neither I or the taxidermist were sure how it would even come out. From what I gather, the guy was an avid hunter and the son wanted to honor that in his own way.
It's different for sure.

its different, ill say that!

Looks good.

If you keep the same skull to plaque dimensions, it would take up a lot of room on larger animals.

Would never have thought of a design like that.

Jody, I have to agree with CAustin, the plaque is very interesting, but I like it. What kind of wood did you use?

CAustin, here is a picture of my Blesbuck on a plaque shaped like Africa.... (Sorry for the quality, the picture was from my Cell Phone)

The cross was made from cherry. Nice blesbok.

Grady that looks great

Grady ...that is so cool ...patten pending ?
Glen

Grady I also do woodwork and if you don't mind I would like to use your idea on the Africa shape on my wife's Red Heartebeest?(should have it back from taxidermist mext may) Plan on using Zebra wood or some highly figured walnut.

Thats a nice looking mount

Like the African plaque very much... NOT the cross types I'm afraid. Just not my style

Go for it. In-fact, my daughter is thinking she may want one for one of her animals this summer. We are heading over in May.

I would not mind other areas/states, but I think putting a Moose or Caribou on a plaque of Alaska would be a little big. Some of the states may work.

I hunted elephant with Luke Samaris in 2005. It was my fourth safari and I tell you he is a fine gentleman the best. I got the opportunity to meet Patty Curtis, although never hunted with him but enjoyed our conversation around our tent in the Selous. Very sad for a tough guy to leave this world the way he did. Let’s pray the murderers are caught. I hope to see Luke in Nashville.
