In 3 months I will be going back to the Eastern Cape for a 10 day hunt with my wife and son. The problem I just ran into was the bullets I have been reloading are Woodleighs and unobtainable now. What I have to work with it seems are Swift A Frames which I have used with much success in other calibers. Having never hunted Giraffe before I am trying to decide between the 250 gr and the 286 gr. Does the added velocity of the lighter bullet and the flatter trajectory give me an advantage over heavier with deeper penetration or am I just overthinking this? I have to deveop a new load quick so I need to pick one or the other from the start.

A Frame an excellent bullet. 9.3X62 a superlative chambering. Either bullet will be great at giraffe distances. I’d pick bullet weight based on whatever else you might be going after. If giraffe is the biggest, take 250s in your 9.3 and you’ll have a perfect one gun, one bullet arsenal.

No probs with either.

load up, shoot be happy

Heavy bullets are way to go for large animals.

Heavier bullet would be better . Or better yet a .375 if you have one. Giraffe have thick skin .

I've heard of Giraffe being taken with a 270WIN, 7mmRM and 30-06. Others will recommend a minimum of 300WM, but prefer a 338WM or 35WHELEN. When I've spoken with my PH about hunting Giraffe, he prefers the .375 caliber or a 9.3 of some sort. Of course proper bullet placement trumps everything, but having enough SD to drive the bullet home is the issue so go for the 286 grain pill. THICK skin, extra thick skin. So thick that you will be charged extra to have it treated! You don't loose points for using a larger bullet. Enjoy your hunt.

I always vote for heavy for caliber bullets for African animals. Giraffes have very thick skin.

Neck shot or body shot? My son took an old bull with a neck shot last summer with a .270 win and a 130 gr barnes. I took one in 2018 with a 7mm RM.
A proper neck shot is decisive. A body shot, as I did, required multiple shots. I’d suggest going with the 286 gr.

Exactly my point...shot placement is KING.

Not sure your price range. Have a 375 H&H with a muzzle brake. Nice rifle only fired a few times. Also a Mossberg 375 Ruger its been used and shows a few hunts on it.
Two African Safaris Hunted South Africa both times,
9 game animals taken
Has anybody hunted with Phumba safari in steenbokpan south Africa?
