Hello, I am new to Africa Hunting, I am in the works of having a .505 Gibbs Built on a Brno 602 action, Pac Nor Barrel and a CZ 550 American Safari stock by B&C.
Anyway I am looking for some good loads using H-4831 SC or H-4350. I would consider other powders but want to avoid fillers or really slow powders. I am looking to achieve 2450-2500FPS with a 600 grain Woodleigh solid for fun…… or maybe to use on buff in 2025.

Congrats on your 505 Gibbs project. Have you shot may round with those specs? Seems kind of fast for that bullet.

I Have a .458 Win and I have shot a .460 Weatherby, but unfortunately our leader Banned the .460 because its over 10,000J of energy so my best option was .505 because its loaded light from factory and not banned and has lots of potential.
+ I want to shoot a really heavy recoiling rifle! My .458 I only bought it to shoot a dangerous game rifle, but now Africa seems like a possibility so……. Cant have too many guns!

Elected leader that needs to be un-elected and sent to show the bears how woke he is.
Ya, hopefully this nightmare ends soon! Us gun owners have taken a sh!t kicking these past few years. Like a really really bad $hit kickin, apparently now they want to give deer birth control, ya figure that one out. Another way to make hunting obsolete.
And no I am not joking.

Yes, on both sides of Trump the shooting folks took a bit of a beating on prices and supply

Welcome to AH and congratulations on choosing one of the best .50’s to use on DG!
2500 fps for a 600 grainer is asking for trouble. I get 2200-2350 from 600grn Dzombo’s and it’s a stout load.

John is spot on.. (but I’d even suggest 2100-2200 fps), 2200 fps, with the right bullet, is the .505 sweet spot. Don’t be afraid of fillers- the end user doesn’t know the difference… but the shooter does! Powder burn rates and powder charge weights make you love a .505 or hate it. Enjoy!

My standard hunting loads will be within factory range, wouldn’t mind ramping a few up just for the recoil experience
After all my research the .505 was the biggest I could get. And so happens I bought a whole reloading set for $900
2 bags of Norma brass, 11 boxes of bullets (1 Box Swift A frame 535, 2 box Barnes TSX, 3 box woodleigh 525 sp, 1 box 525 solid 2 box woodleigh 600grn solids, 2 boxes 600 grn sp) set of dies and shell holders.
Have 4 boxes of Norma on order from a local store that can get pretty much anything I need for it.
Also going to order a case trimmer from CH Tool and Die this week.
As far as fillers go I would rather load a bulky enough powder than bother with fillers. Although I have heard the Backer Rod is a decent filler thats easy to work with… as long as the foam residue doesn’t foul my barrel too bad.

Ya After lots of reading the .505 seemed like a good choice, my gunsmith will have his work cut out for him to get it to feed, I need 100% reliability. Not gonna be a fancy gun but it should get the job done!

I will be using Vihtavuori N165 powder for my 505 Gibbs. I used it in my 416 Rigby at 96% case capacity and matched to Vihtavuori load data. In the Gibbs, will be around 98% case capacity with a 525 gn Woodleigh.

Just cronied a new load using 135grs N560 @ 2260fps Hornady 525 GDx pills.
Shoots to same point of aim as the 600 grain solids from Dzombo (2350).

A 505 shooting 600 grain bullets at 2400fps will definitely give you the recoil experience you are seeking . I am happy with 2150fps with the 600 grain pill . It certainly seems to hit hard and penetrate .

Like your call sign! as the Gibbs is my favorite.
N560 is a good choice. I went with the n165 as lower bulk density and a bit less energy content so as to get nearly 100% load density,

P.S. I grew up just outside Sac. In Fair Oaks:)

Welcome to the 500 club. If you've shot a 460 Weatherby without a brake you're more than ready for your 505 Gibbs. If you've only shot one with a brake, start out with standard loads (600g at 2150 fps). They will clean out your sinuses and give you the experience you want. Work up from there. The most powerful load I've shot through my 500 Jeffery was a 570g TSX at 2510 fps. Fun index was low. I toned it down to a 570g TSX at 2300 fps. Plenty of recoil and it's fun to shoot.

I have been using 124grAA4350 with 525gr and 117gr AA4350 that puts the 505 a little above the 500NE level's. Recoil is very manageable.

600Gr Rhino Solid Shanks & Monometal Solids at 2150fps.

Anything faster is only for sadomasochists.

I have a load for a 600 grn pill with n165. I find it the perfect powder.

I'm using RL15 and a 525gr CEB Solid
The Woodleigh re-loading Manual is a very good resource
