so as many of you know im in the works to buy a B. Searcy in 500/416 NE. i hope to reload for this cartridge but ive run into a problem. there is pretty much no load data as far as i can find. this baffles me since its probably one of the best double rifle cartridges for a reloader (.416 bullet is very common). plus the cost of factory ammunition is out right silly ($10+ per cartridge) .

any one have any load data?

being that the 500/416 NE is very close to the 416 Rigby in performance, i wonder if i could use 416 Rigby load data as a reference. obviously it wont be the same as i believe the 500/416 NE runs a larger case but is kept at a lower pressure. what are your thoughts on this?

thanks
-matt

Call or email Butch and ask him what he did for a regulation load. Make sure you have the sn handy.

I finally got ahold of Butch, but sadly he did not have the regulating load for this rifle. he told me he only ever made two rifles chambered in 500/416 NE 3.25" and this one was regulated to a hand load using the Barnes TSX bullet with most likely H1000 as powder.

Well that is a good thing then, TSX is a good bullet.

while I have been able to find a little load data. what I have found to work pretty well so far is 416 Rigby data. seems like most Rigby data in books at least comes close.

here is the load data ive found on other forums. (disclaimer: this is various data found online and I cannot be held responsible for any problems it may cause)

410 gr bullet
- powder H-4831 Min 94 grs Max 97 grs - Velocity 2270 fps
- powder H-1000 Min 97 grs Max 109.5 grs - Velocity 2380 fps
- powder IMR 7828 Min 96 grs Max +-99.5 grs - Starting load only suggested, untested load by originator
- powder IMR 4831 Min 91 grs Max +-94.5 grs - Starting load only suggested, untested load by originator
- powder AR-2214 Min 97 grs Max +-109 grs - Starting load only suggested, untested load by originator
- powder AR-2217 Min 96 grs Max +-99 grs - Starting load only suggested, untested load by originator
350 gr bullet
- powder H-4350 Min 94 grs Max 98 grs - Velocity 2540 fps
- powder H-4831 Min 98 grs Max +-103 grs - Starting load only suggested, untested load by originator
- powder H-1000 Min 104 grs Max +-109 grs - Starting load only suggested, untested load by originator
- powder IMR 7828 Min 100 grs Max +-103 grs - Starting load only suggested, untested load by originator
- powder IMR 4831 Min 95 grs Max +-98 grs - Starting load only suggested, untested load by originator
- powder AR-2214 Min 104 grs Max +-109 grs - Starting load only suggested, untested load by originator
- powder AR-2217 Min 103 grs Max +-103 grs - Starting load only suggested, untested load by originator

max loads

A) reload 1
.500/416 N.E. (max pressure is 3150bar)
case: Wolfgang Romey
bullet: 400grs Swift A-Frame
primer: CCI 250
powder: Reloader 22 98.0grs
OAL: 100,0mm
V0: 706 m/s
pressure: 2806 bar

B) reload 2
.500/416 N.E. (max pressure is 3150bar)
case: Wolfgang Romey
bullet: 410grs Woodleigh RNSP
primer: CCI 250
powder: Hodgdon H1000 109.5grs
OAL: 103,0mm
V0: 725 m/s
pressure: 2803 bar

C) reload 3
.500/416 N.E. (max pressure is 3150bar)
case: Wolfgang Romey
bullet: 410grs Woodleigh FMJ
primer: CCI 250
powder: Hodgdon H4831SC 97.0grs
OAL: 103,0mm
V0: 693 m/s
pressure: 2723 bar

In a Krieghoff 500/416, 108 gr of H1000 behind a 410 gr Woodleigh soft gave 2330 fps and regulated perfectly. A load of 107 gr behind a Woddie solid did the same at about 2325 fps. This is Rigby ballistics from a double....and your shoulder knows it.

-matt

Hi,
I shoot a Krieghoff in 500/416,factory load data was 108 gr H1000 with the 410 gr Woodleigh soft or solid,I found this load very accurate @ 50,you might have to go up or down a grain in your rifle.
