I got some ammo in the purchase. 20 Interbond 500 gr and a lot of DGX (4505). I think there are newer variants of these nowadays? Anyway, is this Interbond the discontinued model that had issues?

To my knowledge, it is the first generation of the their Dangerous Game Expanding, aka the DGX, that was poorly designed. Basically it is a conventionally designed open front cup and core using an unbonded lead core surrounded by a thin steel jacket. The most recent improvement of the DGX called the DGX Bonded is quite a bit better. It's a bonded cup and core with the same steel jacket surrounding the lead core. Additionally, the front jacket is internally skived with 8 grooves to promote a symmetrical "mushroom" upon expansion.

The Interbond is a different critter altogether. However, the Interbond is not a great design either. Once the core bonding marketing craze hit, many companies jumped on to catch the wave. Hornady's Interbond is simply a basic old cup and core design using a relatively thin jacket bonded to a lead core. If the impact velocity on those bullets is too fast and/or the tissue encountered too hard then they will fail just like any thin jacketed bullet. The only difference being the jacket shards will have some lead still clinging to them after fragmentation. The core bonding does help keep the jacket from shucking the core upon or just after impact, BUT it will not keep the bullet together if the dynamic/kinetic stresses are too great and it starts coming apart. Been there, done that on an animal with another simple thin jacketed bonded cup and core whit a design nearly identical to the Intebond. The saving grace for a 45 cal 500 gr bullet where it's sheer mass and sectional density may make up for any shortcomings of design or construction. IMO, their DGX Bonded is much better than both their original DGX and their equivalent Interbond.

Not to be confused with any of the above is their Interlock bullet. Hah! Pure marketing nonsense. The Interlock does almost nothing to maintain the integrity of a bullet after impact. Simply an old thin jacketed cup and core design with a rib around the internal surface of the jacket that does little more than add a marketing name- Interlock. The jacket shards after fragmentation will still have that little rib on their internal surface :)

Dr. Lott, those "old" bullets will punch paper just fine. As noted there are much better bullets available for hunting.

Alright thx for the swift answers. I have loaded som TSX 450 gr that I’m going to have for moose. Maybe i use those DGX or Interbond for Bear.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
