I am contemplating the 450 Nitro in the classifieds. I have a health supply of Woodleigh 500’s. I see most of the load data for this caliber is for a 480gr bullet. Does anyone have loads for this with a 500gr?
Just be aware that Woodleigh specifically made a 480 grain RNSN and FMJ bullet for the 450NE so the cannelure is in the right spot to suit the 450NE COL. Not saying you cant use the other 458 calibre 480 grain or 500 grain bullets Woodleigh offers but the position of cannelure is not specific to the 450NE so may not line up with the COL all that well. Id' say go with the 480 grain specific to the 450NE but might be hard to get now with Woodleigh out of action. Also if you did load the 500 grain Woodleighs I am sure you could use 480 grain bullet load data less 5-10% powder charge as a starting point and work up a load from there.
Pierre van der Walt has data for 500 grain bullets for both the 450- 3 1/4” (Rigby) and the 450 #2 -3 1/2” (Jeffery). This is in his excellent “African Dangerous Game Cartridges.”
Woodleigh and Hornady both just list 480s.
This may not do @Backyardsniper any good. Someone else may be wondering.
Pm me and I can send the data if needed.
