45-70 ammo

Don’t use Federal Blue box on anything big or tough, not tough enough for Waterbuck or Sable unless you miss bone going in .

Not something I would shoot Elk with even, Mule Deer most likely.

You are behind the ball if not reloading a 45/70 if you have other than a Trap Door, imo

Can you reload or even get someone in SA to ?

He was on quite the roll tonight without the influence of beer… I can only imagine the trouble the three of us could find ourselves in over a 750ml of good gin :D
Is there a such thing as good gin?
Why wast drinking time with anything less than bourbon or a Canadian?
I have used federal, Winchester and a few rem. 300 gr hp
On deer broadside shots 45 cal hole in and out
They have went through 2 deer
The only difference I saw was the rem load seam slower
The fed and win seam the same
Through and through on hogs.

The only reason I went to the Hornday leaver loads they were cheaper and got easer to find with out online ordering
oh forget the rifles were a H&R handy rifle
A full size marlin 189
And the guide gun that o have now.
The other 2 were lost in a house fire.
And I really miss the H&R. It would group all the 300 hp tuching
3 shot group and the 405 safe for any load about 2 in lower .
I loved that 150 yd sight in with the 300gr for deer and the 405 for closer hogs at 100 and in.
On one little 7 pt he was looking at me shot him in the little white patch on his chest came out right under the butt. ( never doing that again) and that was with the 300gr
Had a big doe running in front of dogs did not see the pine sapling. Center punched it hit her behind the shoulder came out the other side about Goff ball size. About 50 cent size blood drops that quickly turned into about a 6 in ribbon of blood right to her about 25 yds or so from the shot.

OK so the dealer here after me asking for a couple of years has managed to get some in his latest shipment....what's it like?...no point recommending other makes etc as this is it...am happy as been waiting...so just asking how it works... :D Beers:

Did your box come with the little plastic cartridge slides? The federal I have are in a little older box they all had the slide and they do work better than you would expect.
They keep rounds on my belt through miles of fl swamp

OK thanks....as I said all I can get...not exactly common calibre here...so yeah looking forward to having a play when get back to takeri....shitloads of small termite mounds to play with as well :A Thumbs Up: ....bout usd 64 or so for the box ...not sure how that compares to over in usa...
After Covid they went crazy you had to look around 35-90$ usd
Before that I have a lot of boxes in the ammo safe 16-25$ usd
The reason I brought up using all the 300gr hp
Was they to me at least were basically interchangeable ones just as good as the other.
The 405 gr is slow ( black powder pressure) but it penitrats .
My only reason for now using the more power full hornday 325 I can get them locally 42$ and there local.

Mmm....after quaffing and number of beverages with % content I can't remember...but think no...only in normal type box holder :E Head Scratch:

I've used that load on deer sized game with no issues if properly placed (as always). If you were very comfortable with the rifle, it would also work well on follow-up for leopard or PG.

Reloading illegal......and sa isn't exactly that close.......then getting it in.....not realistic.....as said just wanted bit of info on the ammo...from what I been told sounds ok....

Comparative prices in USA for 45-70 Federal 300 grain SP are $35/box USD, before shipping.
African prices are a variable, but at least you have the ammo.
This ammo was very accurate in my Marlin 1895 with 22-inch barrel.
Let us know how this works for you.

I have only used 350 grain loads in my Marlin 45-70.

They were awesome penetrators.

But 300 grain bullets have a good reputation and at 45-70 velocity are unlikely to fail to achieve decent penetration.

I would use carefully placed shots on your bigger animals until the load proved itself.

I think you will be fine with the 300 grain federal load.

I will add that I have used the federal 260 grain load on wild hogs in a 454 Casull, and it worked great. The 454 and the 45-70 are pretty close in field performance in my experience.

I did find where Mason Leather tested the 300 grain federal load in ballistic gel.

99% weight retention, 1.9X expansion, and around 2 feet of penetration at 100 yards from a 16.5 inch Marlin with a muzzle velocity of about 1700 fps.

You are good to go.

i load the 300 gr hornady hollow and flat point bullets with 50 grs H-4198 for 2000 fps out of a ruger #1 and a ruger #3, groups were shot at 199 yards from a brench rest. you can load heavier but for what i shoot their is no need. with a double lung shot ray charles could be your tracker.
correction, 100 yards not 199 yards

Beggars can't be choosers, I suppose.

1880 fps seems kinda slow for a 300 gr pill. I'm only about 250 fps slower than that with 425 gr and 525 gr pills; and Hornady's 325 gr is supposed to be around 2100.

The arc isn't quite as looping for that cartridge as some might suspect. On a 100 yard zero, you should be able to reach 130 - 150 yards on blesbok/impala without having to adjust for holdover.

My 1895GBL is zeroed at 125, which gets me to about 160 yards for white tails without making a holdover adjustment. Not that it matters, 99% of my deer and hog hunting is 60 yards or nearer.

I think those older 300 gr loads were all lower pressure.
Not sure if they were safe for the original trap doors but I think made to be safe in the reproduction trap doors.
I think that’s why there so slow.

I've got a friend that uses that ammo for deer and big hogs with zero issues, most 45-70 ammo is loaded at very modest velocity because of all the older rifles out there.

Found this ballistics gel test on youtube and it seems promising.

The Hornady loading manual in the .45-70 95 Marlin pressure data lists 2100fps as max with IMR4198 for their 300gr bullet
