Hi all,

Just wondered if any body would take the above bullet for elephant?? I would prefer the 350grn but Kynoch UK who are the woodliegh importer for me don't have them and don't know when or if they would be getting them in. Also any words on the weldcore bullets would be good too.

Many thanks

yes and yes on the bullets, both are fine projectiles if kept at reasonable speeds. the Woodleigh SP bullets have been known to come apart on big bones so be mindful of where you shoot the animal (I would avoid the shoulder of larger animals such as cape buffalo). others wise I don't see any issue with Woodleigh bullets.

now a 375 wouldn't be my first choice for elephant but that's another story.

What about the Hydro? Very encouraging reports about that one

Used the hydro on a black bear last week. Decisive. 9.3x62 made a penny-size intrance wound left front chest and exited with a nickel-size wound at the last rib (probably still going). Everything in the chest was destroyed. The boar died in his tracks. I'll use the .375's next year in Moz.

If you want load ammo, Norma has the 350gr in woodleigh.

Only thing with the hydro is it might have a different POI to the soft if I was to engage any game using that combination.

I'd buy both and check terminal performance on some kind of test medium well before you hunt anything. In my experience with heavy for calibre projjies in a 7x57 and 9.3x62, they can divert post impact. More prevalent at moderate velocities and with spitzers than RN's though.

The 300 would be fine.

I believe the idea is that the Hydro is a substitute for both soft and solid. I have not used them but that would seem to be @Red Leg experience. Whatever you decide good luck on an awesome trip!

It is designed to essentially replace solids and softs.

Is it good as a soft?? I didn't think they mushroomed or do they use the hydro static shock for the increased wound channel? Just need to see if Kynoch have them

No it does not. I has a "cup" at the terminal end (covered by a round plastic nose cone) which is designed to insure both straight penetration and significant tissue disruption without expanding. All I can say definitively is that it worked exactly as advertised on a boar black bear. I would think the 300 gr .375 might prove an outstanding single bullet option for a Buffalo PG hunt.

The only thing that concerns me is the pass through if the bull is in a heard.

i wouldnt use a hydro on animals in a herd unless i had to.

the Woodleigh hydro and similar style cup point bullets will do more damage then a standard solid but still less damage then a SP. they will also pass threw animals in almost every situation (with exception to the heaviest animals). for plains game i dont see any reason to use a hydro unless you simply dont have any other choice and then you must be mindful in herd situations which means being willing to pass on trophy animals.

for a brain shots on elephant, the hydro wont do any better or worse then the standard Woodleigh FMJ. now if going for a heart shot or a disabling hip shot then the hydro will do more damage which could be very helpful.

Woodleigh make a tougher Weldcore for the 375 then their standard one. On Elephant with a 375 I would use a Hydro. From reports they are not likely to shoot clean through an Ele on side on shots and if they do exit will not be going far. I used them on the Ele and Buff I took in Zim with my 416 Rigby. Front shot on the Buff, through top of heart at 70 mts. Ended up about 6 inched from the rear end. Only got the one shot, Buff disappeared in the dust of the herd and dropped 50mts away with blood everywhere. Ele was small and one shot to the brain plus an insurance shot. All tracked straight and did the job. As said better than a solid but not as much damage as a softpoint.

The Weldcores I have used have been in 358 Calibre and are tougher than what Geoff claims. The 375 Weldcores I have used have been on pigs, they work but have never recovered a bullet, not surprisingly. The 416 Weldcores, same as the 375 on pigs and on Camels. Opened up but straight through, should of gone for shoulder shot with it.
