Greetings,

Dad and I are planning our first trip to South Africa next year for plains game. We are thinking Kudu, Gemsbok, Springbok, Impala, etc. For nostalgia purposes, we will both be carrying a few old 300 h&h's; mine a FN Belgium and Dads a pre 64 Winny. 200 gr Partition seems the obvious choice as they shoot good in both rifles. Any other recommendations? Barnes, Swift, Woodleigh, etc?

Ive got a good number of 200gr Nosler partitions set aside for our 300 H&H, but I havent tried any out in the rifle as of yet.. I think they will perform well though.. I did buy a couple of boxes of the Nosler Custom factory ammo loaded with 200gr partitions a few years back, and they shot very well in the rifle..

Currently I am loading Barnex TSX 200gr over a pretty stout charge... accuracy and terminal performance are stellar with that particular hand load..

200gr Nosler partitions would be great for all the animals you have listed. I love the choice in 300H&H.

It depends on what part of South Africa you hunt. Certain areas of South Africa will not have many Springbok. Be flexible and take what Africa offers. Don't pass on a big Nyala, Bushbuck, or Waterbuck especially if a short trip with two hunters.

I like your wording "Dad and I are planning our first trip to South Africa next year for plains game."

"First trip" often turn into second, and third...

I use the 200gr nosler accubonds in my 300H&H.

Well see. It's going to be an awfully expensive trip but from what I hear you need to experience it atleast once. Getting just as bad in the states. Its becoming a rich man's game that's for sure.

It does not have to be too expensive. You can save money by flying coach, going in shoulder season (October is great for hunting specials), doing package hunts which often include daily fees, euro mounts, hunting less expensive countries like South Africa, sticking to plains game, and staying out of overpriced tourist areas and accommodations. The wealthy hunt differently than the middle class.

I save as much as possible to spend on animals. I fly coach and hunt with blue color type hunting outfitters. The middle class can hunt Africa just not like the wealthy.

Completely agree...

You can certainly spend a small fortune on an international hunt (or even an Alaska hunt) without trying too hard..

But by the same token, you can do a week in South Africa on a PG hunt for roughly the same cost as spending a week at Disney in Orlando if you plan correctly and adhere to your budget..

They shoot well in your rifles, I think you have your answer. Load them and run them.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
