For your viewing pleasure.........A very early "nitro express" bolt action.

I've always thought these rifles were the epitome of a classic.
Beautiful

I can’t tell on the box. Is that 6.5 54 or 53R. Either way it’s a rifle I envy.
6.5x53R on the box.

I was hoping this thread was on the 256 Gibbs, as I have one built on a Mannlicher action. But the 256 Gibbs Magnum is a rimless cartridge. It is, however, a .264 bore, not a .256 or .257.

That is a really cool rifle. What stories it might tell....

Blame the Brits: Like driving on the left, they measure between the lands (.256), while the rest of the world goes between the grooves (.264).

I just bought a Jefferys Mannlicher Schoenauer in .256 advertised as a 6.5x53R but I took a punt it was 6.5x54 & it was, only a month before I got another Gibbs Mannlicher in 6.5x53R, I have a few now.

When I see English Sporter Mannlichers & Schoenauers I try for them, would like a nice set by Westley Richards, only have a Mannlicher 95 in .375Ex so far .

Very nice rifle, I have its twin 6.5 but not a TD. Also have a Gibbs 256 Magnum. Both are great shooters. You will have a lot of fun with it. Enjoy.

Those are beautiful.

Viewing pleasure indeed!!! It will a pleasure to hunt with as well.

Lovely rifle!
This is a fine example of the Mannlicher rifle.
It is the 6.5x54 Rimmed . The very same one Bell used to good effect on Elephants. The later 6.5x54 MS was not rimmed and was made to fit in the Shoenhauer rotary magazine hence the name Manlicher Shoenhauer circa 1903. Little known fact is that Holland developed the first rimmed case the .400/375 which was made on MS rifles. This was due to the cosy deal JohnRigby had with his close friend Paul Mauser. There also exists the .375 ex and .375 veloplex all predating the famous .375 HH.
I only need the veloplex to complete my British Mannlicher collection.
I have fine examples by James Woodward,Holland Westley Richards and William Evans. This are great little collectibles that won’t break the bank!

The .375 flanged. Which fits the Mannlicher rifle.

I think the 375 Flanged 2.5 inch case in the photo is the 303/ 375 cartridge used on Lee Speed sporting rifles . Based on the rimmed 303 cartridge . The 9.5x 57 ( 375) cartridge was different and used on Mannlicher Schonaeur rifles . For what it is worth this cartridge fired through the very light MS rifles is possibly the most unpleasant rifle I have ever fired . Prefer to shoot a 600NE any day .

@Esoteric Junkie It would be a joy to hunt deer (or bull elephant) with that beautiful rifle. thanks for posting. @PCC600 I think you are right. FWIW....my 1939 Stoeger Catalog lists MS rifles in 6.5x53 or 9.5x57 for $140, a lot of money during the depression. (A 7x57 was $175) Recoil for the 9.5 is described as "vigorous". For comparison, a Win Mod 70 Super Grade in any caliber was $85. Have no idea what the Gibbs rifle would have cost, but I'll bet it wasn't sold to the average Joe...............FWB

I agree, my 7 lb 4 oz M-S 1910 9.5x57, steel butt plate recoils briskly with 270 gr Hornaday loads. In other words it hurts like hell after a few off the bench. I am convinced it is my shooting position, leaning into it and not rocking with the recoil.

I really like that knife you're selling. It looks so similar to my original 1306 that has been around a long time. I can't spend that much but if you get to a point where you'd entertain offers let me know. Thx, James
