2020 Trophy Hunting Prices

Hope this message finds all well in good spirits and good health. I wanted to better understand the impact of the coronavirus, dollar vs rand, and impact on the oil industry will have on trophy prices for 2020. I am still considering making my way to the Dark Continent: I am sure there may be some deals out there.

Can you please share thoughts on impact of trophy fees for 2020 hunting season?

We don't even know if there will be a 2020 season at this point. The answer to the same question for 2021 would be interesting. Will pent-up demand make prices higher?

I can’t see prices going higher given the long-term fallout and economic crisis the world will be in post Coronavirus.

My thinking is that if things have not opened up by the end of Summer but opens up let's say in September there will be a ton of deals from PHs stuck with unused quota and needing revenue.

I have my 4457s, Safari ammo, passport and safari clothes separated and ready. Travel agent on speed dial to speak, Siri knows.

If a good deal comes I can take off within hours.

My PH was happy to reschedule my May 2020 Zim Buff hunt for May 2021 and credited 100% of my funds against the same cost as 2020. This could be a "bird in the hand" thing or his fear that demand may drop, though I don't think so given the passion we all have for hunting in Africa.

Demographics tell me there's going to be some smoking deals not only next year but in the future. There simply isn't enough new hunters coming along to replace the old farts who are now the bulk of the business.

With good rain this last winter many areas are going to see a surge in animal numbers. I will expect some great deals on plains game animals. There might be some deals on dangerous game but those hunts are always in demand! I would not expect prices to change much. Hopefully airline prices don’t get crazy in price because right now all the airlines are hurting now. Some airlines might fold, less competition means fewer options. Depends on how long this quarantine lasts.

SAA is in the process of laying everyone off and selling its Heathrow landing rights. If it folds it would mean no carrier from J'Burg to other African countries that would allow rifles.

So, someone wanting to hunt Zim would have to fly to Harare with Emirates etc..

I hope someone fills in the gap soon.

Definitely a bias but throw that out and the facts speak for themselves. The numbers are declining.

Anything in African Geographic has an agenda. It is rarely positive.

Not sure why you wouldn't see prices moving much. Airline prices are absolutely down. The dollar is worth 30%+ more v. the Rand than it was in late January. In RSA, anyways, prices will have to be conveyed in Rand, purely, or reduced in dollars to make sense. We are already seeing it on this forum from some of the great sponsors. At this point, I can go to RSA and shoot 5 plains trophies over 5 days for the same price that I could shoot an Aoudad here in TX . . . just insane.

Might be, but he also scews the facts. He said:

The expected annual spend to keep poaching at bay for that land alone would be a minimum US$4 million (500,000 x US$8). This compares to the sales price of an average lion hunt of US$50,000 (the price paid for Cecil the Lion). In other words, the going rate for a lion is 2,5% of the cost to keep that lion area safe from poachers and habitat loss."

What the paragraph above does not take into account is that in the area he is talking about people are also shooting cape buffalo, leopards, elephants, and other plains game that also generate trophy and daily fees. In Tanzania the cost is not trophy fees anyway but the over $3K per day daily fees which the government gets a big chunk of. So, a 21 day hunt (minimum to shoot a lion) is $70K+ just with daily fees and taxes BEFORE you start adding trophy fees for lion and other game shot.

I think you are wrong on the idea of a lot of deals in future because of less hunters, at least in wild Africa. The industry will contract as it did in Tanzania as some areas stop being economical. Population growth will destroy some previously quality areas, especially communal areas. The ban on lion/elephant imports will also lead to more poaching in previously good areas, because the money is no longer there. All this will cause the industry to contract into economical areas, essentially balancing out fewer hunters.
When I went to DSC this year, I didn’t see any shortage of 35-50 year olds there. I’m hoping this Coronavirus will push more people to try hunting to get meat.

i was not planning to go this year, but was planning to go in 2021 with a friend who wants a buffalo, bull or cow. i already shoot a cow buffalo but would like to see him shot one, not much i have not shot so it would have to be some thing special.

As soon as he he highlighted that Kenya spend 14 dollars per hectare in anti poaching, I stopped reading. They might spend that but it is going into some politicians pocket as their record with protecting wildlife is abysmal.
