    Knockabout/ utility rifles

A Mossberg ATR in 243. Bought it for my nephew when he thought he would take up deer hunting. Another one I carry a lot is a Marlin Model 25 in 22 Mag. This rifle has dispatched more pests than I can count.

Lions and Elephants no. Cape Buffalo yes. I felt very under gunned with the 308. We backed up and got real still and quite while they passed about 40 yards from us.

Refining your dangerous game cartridge selection over the years

I started with a set of Ruger No.1”s, The Boddington series. An unforeseen tax event caused me to sell those and other guns. Currently the line up is a Ruger African in 375 Ruger and a Ruger No.1 in 450-400 NE. So not evolved but replaced. I do have the itch for a 450-400 Double Rifle.

I took a peek at a what a couple of the PH’s where using for ammo on our trip last year. Loaner guns where 30-06 and a 308. The 06 was suppressed. Ammo was PPU for both the 06 the 308.

    375 Ruger vs 375 HH

I went with the 375 Ruger for a couple of reasons. First, it is available in a easy to find controlled feed left handed action, the Ruger Hawkeye African. Second was I liked the feel of the rifle and looks. The barrel band and walnut stick with cross bolt has the look. Finding ammo has not been...

Hunting On Fenced Farms Vs Wilderness Areas

What scope do you trust? Most rugged, dependable rifle scope?

Leupold, Triqicon, Ziess. I have no complaints with any of these. Red Dot (Prism Scope) tube style, Aimpoint. I have seen these things keep working with an incredible amount of damage and abuse.

    416 help

One of the advantages to a rifle with a muzzle is that said rifle can be fitted with a suppressor. On our trip last year all of the rifles for rent had suppressors mounted on them. Even the .375 H&H was wearing a can. On my trip next year for Buffalo I am taking a 375 Ruger African (left...

    What’s the latest on sticks?

Current set is a Primos Trigger stick tripod. I really like them. I decided not to take them last year to Africa because I was told my PH would have good commercial shooting sticks or tripod sticks. Mine literally had sticks. No big deal they got the job done. Next year I will take my sticks.

    VX-6HD or Polar T96?

Let us know which you decide on. My reply was going to be that picking a scope comes down to your personal preference and your hunting style. Also a SCI show is a great place to go and look a bunch of scopes.

    25-06 Rem in Africa

I’ve hunted with a 25-06 for years. I’ve used 117 and 120 grain loads in my Ruger MKII. I’ve shot Whitetail deer, hogs, coyotes, Axis deer, cow elk with it. On one Whitetail buck, that was trotting , a quartering away shot at about 80 yards , I caught the deer in the ribs, the bullet...

Mine is a newer African in 375 Ruger. I am left-handed, I wanted to controlled feed, so the Ruger checked the boxes. Previously had one of the older model Africans with one cross bolt through the stock and no muzzle break. The muzzle break does a great job of producing the recoil. The...

    Anyone using a 45/70

Just like the old 45-70 this thread ain’t dead. Buddy of mine used a Marlin 1895 SBL 45-70 on plains game last year. A couple of poorly placed shots resulted in game being tracked. Not the rounds failure to preform, purely trigger nut problem.

Tactical lever actions - what's the appeal?

We shoot our 45-70’s out to 500 yards on a 30” gong pretty often. My Marlin 1895 Cowboy does not have enough elevation on the Lyman tang sight, so there is some Cowboy hold over. The cool thing is to shoot, cycle the action and send the next one before the first impact.

Tactical lever actions - what's the appeal?

Tactical lever gun. For me the Citadel 92 in 45 Colt is a good 4 wheeler gun. I load 45 Colt and push them pretty fast. Why not get the 454 Casull? Model 92’s often have feeding issues with shorter cartridges. A rifle chambered in 454 May not feed 45 Colt. I can also transport this rifle, with...

Back Up For Sale Is A Ruger No.1S-C 45-70

Yes I am the original owner. The S stands for medium sporter. The C stands for C weight barrel. Year manufactured should be 2011. If you put it beside my Ruger No.1 H 450-400, which has a C weight barrel, it looks the same. Which basically makes this a No. H with a Medium Sporter tag. The only...

The 350gr Hornaday RN .458 bullet in the Marlin .45-70

The consideration for the Marlin or any lever gun is the bullet profile. A round nose could set of a round that is in the tube with the recoil. A flat point would not. The Lever Evolution ammo has a softer polymer tip that will not cause the rounds in the magazine to go off. A buddy of mine, we...

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

I think I would stick with the 450-400 NE. I have a Ruger No.1 H 450-400 NE. Hind sight being what is, if I was starting over buying guns… I would have purchased a Heym or Merkel double rifle to start with.
