ZIMBABWE: Savé Valley Conservancy: The Buffalo Saga

I totally agree!! I was there in July. Savé is a very difficult place to hunt - but so rewarding!! After a difficult, meticulous, stalk (50yds over 30mins!!) I managed to take a beautiful old dagga boy. Though my 500gr RNSN broke the left shoulder, tore the heart almost in two, and broke the...

Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

The question is: what's you're favourite hunting cartridges, not calibres. So, if I had to choose only 3 to cover every eventuality I opine: 22LR, 12g shotgun, and 9.3x62. Why the 9.3x62 and not the 375HH? 1) It can do everything the 375HH can out to 250yds, 2) It's just as accurate (and has...

Dangerous Game Hunters - Top Book Recommends?

    First dangerous game rifle

That's why I got a .458 Win Mag (the Lott was not commercially available way back then) as my first dG calibre, and have never felt under-gunned ever since. Indeed on one buff hunt in Zambia, my Zim PH was using the camp 375HH. One day his tracker was lagging behind with the 375HH when we came...

mono vs lead for Cape Buffalo?

In my own experience, Ive taken buff - broadside - using 500gr RNSN over 72gr AR2206H powder. In every case the bullet has been found under the hide on the opposite side.

mono vs lead for Cape Buffalo?

I reload my own ammunition for hunting, and I've taken a few cape buffalo and hippo using copper-jacketed Woodleigh 500gr RNSNs in my 458. Without exception these projectiles give superb straight line penetration and weight retention (98%). I've also taken cape buff with my 9.3x62, using...

SOUTH AFRICA: Two Buffalo Cows And A Wildebeest Charge. Who Gnu?

Congratulations on the wildebeeste!! Your experience reminds me of my experience with a wildebeeste. Back in 1990 I was 19 and on my first African hunt. One afternoon I was restless in camp, so my PH told me to take a tracker and go see what I could find (my PH stayed in camp reading "Lonesome...

    Overpriced Reloading Components?

I blame COVID. IMO some outlandish prices may be due to some dealers capitalising through profiteering in the wake of the worldwide epidemic.

    The African 3 gun battery

Pre-1909 rifle calibres I'd take: 470 NE 9.3x62 7x57mm - and for me that's saying a lot because I love my 30/06 Spr. Of course a 12g, matched to my 470 NE double, would be "de rigueur".

    Thoughts on the 9.3 x 62 Mauser

A few hours ago, idly watching YouTube, I found two great videos on the calibre for anyone who's interested: 1) Ron Spomer's: "The surprising 9.3x62 rifle cartridge" 2) Bill Wilson's: "The Ruger 77 in 9.3x62mm: Bill Wilson's favourite hunting rifle".

    Thoughts on the 9.3 x 62 Mauser

Yes I've heard that too about the 375HH. However, Kevin Robertson in his book "Africa's most dangerous" states that his Brno 9.3x62 "client" rifle has taken over 600 cape buffalo. And just like when using the 375HH, placement of that first round is critical, and always have your PH backing you...

    Is Capstick real or fake?

I heard that too from PHs I was with in Zim and elsewhere. As identified by others he embellished stories - and used his gift for telling a story to write some entertaining books - but I think the problem arose from those stories he implied were his OWN experiences (ie: writing in "the first...

Yet republicans are ok with calling the opposition "demonrats" but get upset when labelled a supporter of the "repugnant" party? As someone replied earlier: "You know that is simply not done in polite society" - so sorry, but if you can't take it - don't dish it out. QED.

Maybe it was "bomb throwing" but just to test a point to the nth degree. But in casting normal political action/reaction as some kind of underground resistance to a tyrranical regime is stretching the point a bit too far I think - as you said yourself, "that's not done in polite society". But...

    Future of international hunting

IMO that has a lot to do with the manipulation of the media in not supporting/advocating for sport hunting or target shooting. Hydros In Smaller Caliber Rifles

I totally agree!! Woodleighs are a great game projectile. I've taken over half a dozen African DG (so far), from a hippo on the run at 120yds down to a quatering on cape buff at 35. Their 500gr RNSN, atop 72gr of AR2206H, just flattens game!! I run Woodies out of my 9.3x62 (286gr RNSN) and my...
