    Rifle scope reticle choice ...

what i use is a laser, such as Wheeler, place target at know distance, say 10-20yds, max magnification and measure where each subtends lands the laser, then can estimate the reticle subtend spacing, at least get you close. Steve

Reloading can be dangerous and scary if you don't do it right

i updated my QL to your input. My procedure with QL is to find published data (hopefully with psi info) of a cartridge with similar case volume, PSI rating and match velocity and pressure by adjusting the Burning Rate Factor, Ba and Weighing Factor, We (per Herr Broemel) until I match vel. and...

Reloading can be dangerous and scary if you don't do it right

wondering if the charge was to low? I fit QL to Vih. data for the 6.5x57r as similar psi rating and case capacity and then used that for the 6.5x54 and shows the pressure is really low, around 30kpsi and vel. only 2073fps. Is the powder burning?, detonating? Did the bullet leave the case and...

505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

I should point out than in the recoil equation, the charge gas exit velocity is 1.75x the bullet velocity and this is why folks say large volume cases usually have higher recoil. The recoil energy sensitivity to bullet weight shows this: 500J ∆FRE/∆bullet = 0.24ft-lb/grain 505 ∆FRE/∆bullet...

505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

@zephyr, following your lead, used the Woodleigh manual and rather than using extremes, averaged the charge weights and velocities. Then, calculated the sensitivity of each to charge weight. Used 10lb rifle. 500J ∆FRE/∆chg = 0.41ft-lb/grain 505 ∆FRE/∆chg = 0.44ft-lb/grain So you can see...

505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

thought to compare apples to apples. Some report the Gibbs has more recoil than the Jeffery, so thought using QL, with the same loading, how do they compare in 10lb rifle. Note the Jeffery has a faster risetime but essentially, they are the same. Perhaps comparison were made with different...

458WinMag vs 500 NE Death Match!!!

I modelled these in QL (each fitted to Hodgdon load data) per the OP info. Note the winmag has much faster pressure rise, fall...

this is 300PCR necked to 458, with larger shoulder (35 whelen neck to shoulder dimension), slightly shorter body. The red is the 300PRC case overlap with the 458 chamber. Is this enough headspace intersection for fireforming? (do not want to mechanically size the brass)

458/338 Lapua Magnum using Ruger Hawkeye African platform endeavour

this would be a nominal load below. By nature, I am not a high velocity guy. Max. velocity at the max. Lapua case pressure looks to be 2414fps. At the 450 Rigby max. pressure, 2300fps So, either a high velocity 458 or a low pressure 458. Steve

458/338 Lapua Magnum using Ruger Hawkeye African platform endeavour

thanks for the input. the PRC necked to 458, not sure about the shoulder (did not want to increase dia). looks like same capacity as the 458 wnmag, with a bit higher pressure case. 458-338 lapua? Anyone done this?

A more accurate comparison is the 458/338LPM to the 416 Ruger in that similar pressure, OAL, velocity but with a 0.458, 500gn bullet.
  34. J

    458-338 lapua? Anyone done this?

so i guess the idea would be a std length cartridge for DG with more oomph than the current 458's. @jwp475 the 458/338 normalized to the 450 Rigby Norma data, shows for the same pressure, 55102psi, the Rigby has 2159fps vs the 458/338 has 2117fps. That was near max. for the Rigby.

    Beware QuickLoad

so i use the QL shot start for aframes. cuts back on the velocity but oh well... Drawn copper tensile strength is ~66kpsi and has huge bearing surface vs gilding metal ~32kpsi and pure copper bullets have driving bands and much less surface.
  36. J

    Beware QuickLoad

Ah… I asked if calculations or measurement, and responded was sent to lab and measured. They use thick, pure copper vs gliding.
  37. J

    458-338 lapua? Anyone done this?

the OAL is just at max (Ruger mag box is at ~3.45". With Hyd 480 DGX is 3.439" and with Bar 450 TSX at 3.367". The case might need to be trimmed a hair, depending upon the length after fire forming (I used 26/1000" case shrink per the wildcat wizard). The Ruger bolt is 0.690" diameter, so would...

    458-338 lapua? Anyone done this?

The Rigby case is 170/1000” longer and psi rating Is 15% lower. It’s OAL is 3.75 vs the 458/338 would be at 3.429, I guess trying to get rigby performance in a shorter package.
  43. J

    458-338 lapua? Anyone done this?

I guess the idea is to use a short, high pressure case.the Lapua is much shorter and a tad higher pressure. Unfortunately, it is a 416 Rigby in width:( There is a wildcat wizard that post here, perhaps he will chime in!
  44. J

    458-338 lapua? Anyone done this?

yeah, the length is there but the width is tough. I was looking to stuff it into a ruger hawkeye but will not work, so then the length can be longer in a or CZ or such

  46. J

    458-338 lapua? Anyone done this?

@kfreeze not a bad idea. I noodled this in QD & QL, similar performance to a 450 Rigby but in a std OAL of 3.34" I used the same shoulder at the 450 Rigby. Due to the thicker web and consequently, higher pressure rating, could get to 2400fps in 24" barrel. Steve
  47. J

When loading the 500 Jeffery is a filler (foam plug) needed?

@SkullKeeper you might also consider bulky powders n165 (similar to @DWB or h4831sc (AA manual has load data with pressure for the h4831). I use either in my 505 Gibbs. H4350 is probably a better choice, more efficient, slightly less than 100% load density. Steve

    Recoil reducers

i used two 6" long tungsten rods, 0.3125" diameter, in my 495 Asquare. It came as 12" length, my gunsmith said he would cut them again and he hates boring holes that long in a wooden stock. Anyhow, I like the balance they give and the rifle feels "solid" to me.
