You want to buy something special, you want to treat yourself, what rifle do you buy?

Because I’m a bit ….."different "…. I would get myself an original whitworth rifle in 451, hopefully with the original hexagonal mould. I’ve shot one before and loved it Gumpy

If you were to buy a semi-custom African hunting rifle…

If you want the 416 rigby and it ticks all the right boxes, then I wholeheartedly recommend you build it, there are a few little things that need to be done to ensure a long life of the firearm, but any decent smith will do them, a barrel recoil lug bedded into the stock is one, obviously cross...

    7x64 cartridge/rifle clue me up

Just adding to the camel comment, I knew a guy in Lenora w.a. who used a 223 on camels regularly, shot placement was the important thing, a 7x64 won’t have any issues Gumpy

    Help me identify my mauser

Can you see anything on the front receiver ring around the scope base, may need to take the base off to see, assuming that it isn’t soldered on. And it’s a kar98 with mismatched numbers from what I can see , and that stamped thistle like image, over the part number, is vaguely familiar Gumpy

    Help me identify my mauser

That scratched on serial number is very reminiscent of the butchery done by the police department here in south Australia in their belief that it won’t damage the value of the firearm Gumpy

If you were to buy a semi-custom African hunting rifle…

It really depends on what "you" want and what you want to do with it , I’ve got a 458windbag which works ok, although apparently 560gn pills at 2200fps are just plinking ammo, and a 404J on a 98 action, both custom builds, I’ve built up a 416 rigby on a 550 action for someone else. All of these...

I should add, this was at a "friendly "shoot here in Australia called WBB (wadonga big bore) probably 2018? Some forum members have been to later WBB's and may be able to attest to the shenanigans that can occur ( Kane was involved) Gumpy

a Jekyll & Hyde or the Two-Faced 458 custom Mauser

The “458 Winchester Magnum, all the cartridge you’ll ever need” thread

Acceptable accuracy in a rifle! What’s that mean??

Accuracy, to me when hunting, is hitting what I’m aiming at, roughly where I’m aiming, and what I hit dropping on the spot. I do a lot of culling and as long as the animal drops dead I am happy. Target shooting is a different kettle of fish( I do wonder why they put fish in a kettle) Gumpy

    Finding the one gun

If you are just chasing fallow or sambar, a 7x57(275rigby),8x57( two classics on a Mauser), even a 308 would do, if you want classic a 300H&H or maybe a bit more of a thumper and then 8x68S or…..dare I say it….a 35whelan. There is nothing wrong with the 7.62x63 (I’ve got one) it’s just …dull...

    Finding the one gun

I’d build a custom rifle, but then I do my own, if you need a smith in S.A. there are several to stay away from, the good ones are busy with long wait times, there are several very good stock makers in aus (Brett Rousou?) and some exceptional wood is grown here( in tas, think Gordon cousins) and...

    .375 Identification

    Best rifle for 458 WM?

I thought I explained that with the minimal resizing comment? As above, I would do a chamber cast before any attempt to shoot it, if you don’t know how to, get a smith to. It well may be a 458 wind bag (yes, intentional pun) or something else that may chamber a 458 case, but not like it, in a nasty way Gumpy
