    bringing meat back from greenland

I’m surprised. I killed a musk ox on Nunivak Island in 23 and it was one of the most tender, delicious meats I’ve ever eaten. Hunt can’t much but the table fare was fantastic

    My scope mounting routine

Jay, on my Dakota Traveler 416 Rigby with a 338 Lapua barrel, I had the same issue with having to raise the ring height to clear the rib with the scope bell. On my 338 LP barrel, the raised rib was only secured with two screws. I removed it and installed plugs in the holes. Kept it clean and I...

    Recommendations for elephant skin tanning

On my return from Zim last December, in the airport in Bulawayo, I met the gentleman who runs the commercial tannery there. He had met with Vincent at Collets shortly after I was there. He told me he would be tanning my elephant panels as he does all Collets elephant work. His facility also does...

Which would you prefer- 416 or 404

I have experienced Harare and Bulawayo. Harare was a total cluster f$&k with 6-7 people trying to count. Dumping ammo on the floor to count. Taking pictures. It was a clown show. And I had a local assistant sent by my outfitter. Bulawayo was smooth and seamless. Two people. Both were friendly...

safari travel insurance, rifle permits agency

BCBS Global Solutions has what I consider very inexpensive health insurance for traveling out of country. Most US based insurance companies and I do believe Medicare as well, do not provide coverage abroad. Global Solutions is easy to sign up for and get a quote for only the days you will be...

Get experience first? Or, hunt dangerous game right away?

I guess I did a combo of both. I booked a plains game hunt in the EC for March of '24, but before I finalized travel arrangements, I decided as long as I was there, I may as well hunt more. So I found a discounted two cow buffalo hunt in Limpopo. Flew from EC to Limpopo and had a second great...

CANADA: Big Bears And Lots Of Them... Spring Rut In Saskatchewan

We find the meat delicious when properly cared for and cooked correctly. But we have only hunted fall bear so usually they are fat and have been feeding on berries and grass. Render down the fat for excellent leather treatment as well as cooking. Makes the best pie crusts. Headed up to Alberta...

    Red dot on Double

@dogcat1 said: Haven’t seen any PH’s using red dots…. I thought the point of using a double was to be like the pro’s. If you need or use use optics , get a bolt rifle… If you like open sights , like on a shotgun, use a double. If you like red dots , use an AR15. I guess I am too set in my ways…...

    Red dot on Double

@Nhoro Reasonable thought. Certainly something to think on. Not my article, as a matter of fact, I don't have that much experience with different placement of the sight. Both my 470 doubles (Chapuis and Merkel) have had an RMR mounted by JJ. He typically (at least in my cases) mounts them...

    Christensen Ridgeline FFT 375 H&H?

Bolt lift on my Ti Ridgeline 300 WM was stiff when I bought it. Put in an aftermarket spring and firing pin and haven't looked back. Shoots very well, even with factory ammo and is a dream to carry in the mountains.

    Christensen Ridgeline FFT 375 H&H?

I own 5 Christensens in 300 win mag and have mounted scopes and broken in 9 others for our hunting group, mostly hunting in Montana. We have had zero issues and all have been very adequate. I don't know what model you are looking at, but I would question 5.5 lbs. Even my Ti Ridgeline with a...

Zimbabwe Omay Hunt Quota Available 2026

My first Zimbabwe hunt for tuskless was with Lindon Stanton's outfit. He allowed me to also take a buffalo for trophy fee only. It was an end of the season hunt though, so that may have been the reason.

Very nice. You'll look at these trophies with fond memories for years to come. Mine from last December is at Collett's now. I was gonna just hang the tusks with copper caps, but after seeing your bases, I really like that look. Mine are smaller as well, 24 lbs each. Also doing an ear map. Love...

What is your accuracy standard for a Big Bore bolt gun?

I'm hunting croc and hippo in Zim in November. My PH, who I have hunted with a few times before and totally trust, said to bring whatever I shoot most accurately. Meaning MOA or better off the bench. I'm still deciding and have more shooting to finalize. Luckily I have a few months to sort it out.

Safari Packing 2.0 with Philip Glass

Excellent advice Phillip. I do the same with my rifle case. Pelican 1750 with center foam removed carries my 470 dr and my 416 Rigby/338 Lapua mag Dakota in soft cases. Add in a cleaning rod, a few basic cleaning and maintenance accessories, my knife and ammo belt and I am just below the 50lb...

    Making maple syrup

Yes. At 2% sugar content in the sap. As content goes up or down, the volume of sap required to make a gallon of syrup goes up or down as well. The 40 to 1 is a generic formula that generally holds true as 2% is an average content.

What is the Standard payment structure for booking a hunt?

I've hunted Zimbabwe twice now, with a third trip coming up this November. All three trips are with established operators that are active on this site. Still trying to sell 458 Lott Left hand Rifle - NEW Price all inclusive $3k

Sir, I don't believe @ftothfadd was trying to disparage your uncle in any way. You are measuring from the front of the trigger guard which gives an extremely long...

An expensive mistake with my Pelican case

I do the same exact same thing as Mr. Glass. My double in one soft case. My magazine rifle in another. While I have never bought or participated in an auction hunt, I have read a fair amount about them with interest. I went thru the SCI and DSC hunt lists out of curiosity. Traveling with rifle to RSA - do you need a "fixer"?

I will reiterate: Best money you will spend on your safari! What will you do if your rifle isn't waiting at SAPS or your bag doesn't come down the baggage carousel? Afton's gun permit/SAPS assistance is $100. Best money you will spend on your trip. Takes the headache and worry out of a possible situation that could go sideways. Making maple syrup

As a little back story, my family owned and operated a large sugar bush in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for many years. A good years production was generally between 8-12,000 US gallons.
