What caliber would you bring back from the dead?

You guys are making me feel really good about my next project! A 9.3x64 Brenneke, I will do what I can to keep it alive. Already have the barrel, and will be putting it on a zg47 action.

    Black bear hunting

I live on vancouver island and hunt bears here, and I also hunt bear in the kootaneys. So I can offer some guidance. Firstly, baiting bears is not legal in BC, I believe you can in Alberta though, so your chances are higher there, BUT it is hunting over bair. Secondly, Bear on the island is...

Utilitarian Reasons to Own Similar Rifles in the Same Caliber

I have a couple 308's and 270's that are more or less similar, and quite a few other calibers that are all close enough that most animals would not notice: 2 x 270 3 x 7x57 2 x 308 There are 4 reasons why I have duplicates: 1) As mentioned, wet weather. I hunt in the Kootenay's and in costal...

What caliber would you bring back from the dead?

@Muskox I guess I would use a lose definition of: "To run this caliber I had to build a custom gun, and I started by sourcing brass and dies before I committed to the project, just to make sure I would be able to feed it" then I would call the caliber functionally dead. @375Fox My hunting...

What caliber would you bring back from the dead?

I love talking about calibers, their pros and cons, the situations to use them in, their history and so forth. Above all that I love collecting them! But one of the worst parts about the history of firearms and calibers, is that some seemingly great calibers die out. Leaving those of us who...

    450/400 3" question

I have a falling block 450/400, not a double, but yea I think you have the right of it. The 450-400 is a good 100yard and in dg hunting caliber, and some newer ammunition is closer to 2100/2150 fps (Hornady specifically). What gives it some real killing power is the slightly narrower bore of...

    7x57 or 358 Norma Mag

I love both of those calibers, and with a 175 the 7x57 is capable of taking them all cleanly... BUT, I would vote for the 358 Norma. Why? Because they are cool, and they don't get enough love! Loaded with a 225gr nosler accubond it shoots flat and long! That swift A frame is going to penetrate...

    35 Whelen or 300 Win??

I know you love the 35w, but it does not edge out the 9.3 unless you apples to orange it in terms of barrel length and reloads vs factory. The 5-8% more case capacity, and the slightly wider bore help the 9.3 edge out the 35w when things like pressure and barrel length are the same. I just have...

    35 Whelen or 300 Win??

I hate it when people come to threads like this and suggest a completely different caliber... However I vote for the 9.3x62. Apparently my hypocrisy knows no bounds lol. Very similar to the 35 Whelen. -The whelen edges it out a tiny amount with trajectory, though you can put a 250gr nosler...

How many guns is “too many”?

In my view I guess it depends on why you own guns. -If you are a hunter, I could see about a dozen, so you have a range of sizes plus a few shotguns. -If you are a sport shooter, you need a couple for each discipline you are in. So maybe 6-8. -If you are a collector, there is no limit, as...

The 47-70 has not, and never will, be a 458 win mag

Firstly, I know this post is going to cause a fight, so those who are so inclined, grab your popcorn now! Seems silly to type this, but I keep coming across the threads about hunting DG with a 45-70, and invariably I find the same comment: “That’s right on the heels of a 458 win mag” “That’s...

Bullets that well advertised but were not that great

For me it was Barns bullets. I find they spike pressure worse than other mono metal bullets, and have had them just needle through game without expanding, that was from a 7mm rem mag which has more than enough velocity to expand any bullet. The new copper expanding North Forks are far superior IMO.

375 H&H Bullet for all Game

I would make an argument for the north fork cup point solid. It will give you deep penetration on a buff, and a wound channel that splits the difference between a soft point and a mono solid. I used them in my 500ne and they gave me slightly large than caliber holes into and out of game. So if...

    Indulge me...Ruger no 1 thoughts

I have not read all the replies, so apologies if what I am typing has been spelled out by others. But! Here is why I love Ruger no.1's. 1) There is a certain appeal to a single shot. I think it relates to the idea of the commitment to accuracy, to use single shots in the field is to say: "I...

    45-70 dangerous game?

I don't think comparing a 9.3x74r and a 45-70 is proper, and the math tends to agree. -On kinetic energy The 9.3 is around 3400ft lbs. The 45-70 is around 2800ft lbs. -On sectional density The 9.3 with a 285 runs around .305 The 45-70 with a 325 runs around .221 -On velocity...

    45-70 dangerous game?

A buddy and me both used Ruger no.1's on cape last summer. Mine in 500ne, his in 416 rigby. Though you only get the one shot, I find that the strength of a no.1 action is almost a cheat code! We did a lot of load dev together, and found that our shoulders were giving out long before we could...

I would also look at CFE223 and N550. Both have worked well for me in 9.3x62 and 9.3x74. CFE223 seems to pack in quite tightly, and is well suited to the 250gr class bullets.

Good day Gent's, So the short story, is that I lucked into a nice Oberndorf long action. Originally it was one of their commercial sorters, made in the 1920's, but later went back to the factory and had its barrel swapped to a 9.3x57. All matching, and according to my smith the metal is in...

    9.3x74R powder experiments

I only got into shooting 9.3x74r after the RE17 disappeared. I found that the Vhit powders have been excellent. N540 for bullets 250 and under, and N550 for heavier. N550 is similar to CFE223 in burn rate but less dense, and more uniform for velocities. I would give it a try.

    Allure of the Ruger No1

Of those three choices: - The 318 would likely not need extractor modification. - The 333 Jeffery would ne a dimension change. Some cost - The 303 would need to have the ejector re shaped. More cost, and you need a good smith. If you want what I consider to be in you category of "not...

    Allure of the Ruger No1

I caliber changed a Ruger last year, so I can offer some advice. Which goes for anyone caliber changing a No.1 Firstly: No caliber is really off the table. The #1 is a one sized fits all action. Be it a 7x57 or a 458 win mag, they are all the same action size. Since the sky is the limit...
