Bummer, sorry you had a bad trip. You should at least get a refund for trophy fees not taken, no?

    Scope for a 458 Lott???

That's what the illumination is for. On 1x it's essentially a red dot. For SFP, I'd get a trijicon.

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

I've about decided on the Alaskan but have noted your caution regarding the striker spring. To your other point, I agree that suppressors aren't totally "hearing safe" despite being under the OSHA magical number of 140dB. Frankly, plugs are borderline as well with most falling in the 20-30 NRR...

First Gun Purchase for new Hunter

For the stated parameters, I voted 6.5prc and I’d go with a threaded Tikka. The PRC has very manageable recoil, good ammo selection and plenty of performance for elk up to stated ranges.

    Short Gaiters

Yep, Boyt. I like them for a minimalist solution.

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

It’s fairly common knowledge that suppressors can increase velocity. Usually negligible, but I’ve seen numbers as high as 50fps. Has to do with gasses still pushing the bullet inside the suppressor. Lots of variables with bore diameter, caliber, baffle design, etc but it is common nonetheless...

    Leupold 3HD “How’s the quality “

Leupold quality has seemingly slipped through the years. They aren’t known for good tracking or zero retention. There’s currently a thread on another forum discussing this very topic and, at the time of this post, only a little over 30% reported zero being retained after a fall/bounced around in...

    Trujicon SRO VS RMR

Have you considered the RCR? I prefer a closed emitter when really exposed to the elements. I’ve had debris and mud collect in the RMR and SRO which can block the emitter. If not, I like the SROs larger window while hunting. By design, the RMR is more durable although I haven’t heard of SROs...

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

On another forum, Zak has stated that their attorney has advised against producing an endcap because of how they read the law regarding “extra silencer parts.” Although many other manufacturers are doing it with apparently no issues? Regardless, it’s only a matter of time before someone steps in...

Do you feel like that was more a result of the advertised weight difference or ergonomics of the stock? Or perhaps both?

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

Sheesh, we’re really getting off topic now. We get it Hank, you hate suppressors. You’re not going to change anyone’s mind about them and no one will change yours. Just move along.

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

Well, I'm not cutting to 16 or 18. I plan to cut it at 20 which will reduce velocity 100 or so fps. How much velocity do you really need? Are we shooting elk across canyons at 600yds? Whitetail at sub 100yds in timber? I think folks are realizing that, in actual hunting scenarios, chopping a...

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

Great points. That TBAC can is the exact one I had in mind and I had the same thoughts as you. Currently trying to source a flat endcap when brake is removed. I haven't been able to find one but there's a guy on another forum attempting to put together a group buy from a local machinist to...

Are there benefits to using a suppressor for plains game hunting

I see your side, however the argument could be made that a suppressor isn't intrusive and the benefits outweigh the negatives. One might opt for a very light titanium can that, with a proper mount system, won't loosen or upset the balance. Aesthetics isn't significant and could be argued...

Why do you feel they don’t belong on DG rifles?

Yes, I do have a hybrid but will be purchasing a thunderbeast magnus for this specific role.

Good to know. Now, does anyone have an OD measurement for the Alaskan?

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

That's good intel and aligns with most of what I've read. The ruger would be the "easy button" solution, but it just doesn't appeal to me like the winchester does. I'd consider that new MRC Tsavo but haven't heard anything about availability date and MRC hasn't been responsive.

Are there benefits to using a suppressor for plains game hunting

I use a suppressor on just about everything. You will enjoy it. Others have covered all the pertinent pros/cons.
  26. S

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

I've held neither so can't say for certain. I wasn't inferring the Safari has "poor balance" as much as "poorer than the Alaskan." Once again, just from comments on the internet. No shop around here carries them, otherwise I'd just go find out for myself.

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

I'm thinking that has to do with the larger bore in 416. I don't think it would be a problem on the 375 but I'll double check.
  28. S

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

Yeah, I would just prefer HH and winchester over the ruger. Personal preference.

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

From my understanding the barrel profiles are different, hence the difference in listed weight. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
  30. S

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

Why? Because I want to. That should be reason enough, but I'll indulge you. Chopping a few inches won't make a significant difference in performance. By all accounts, it seems 20ish fps reduction for every inch. On game sub 100yds, it won't matter. Accuracy won't be affected at all if the...

    Winchester Safari or Alaskan?

Which one do I want? Refreshing this topic as I couldn't find a recent one relative to my specific question. I'm in the market for a 375 and debating these two options. From what I've read, it seems folks prefer the balance of the Alaskan and comment on the excessive weight of the Safari. My...

What are your Tips & Must Haves - 2nd Safari - Namibia

If you're in the market for pants, the Kuiu kutana is a winner. I wear them in all seasons and layer accordingly. Very durable with vents for when it's hot or high exertion. Take a look at them.
  35. S

    Fenced in? Dont think so.

Yeah, PH on my last hunt said basically the same. Said they've killed more than a few tagged kudu that have jumped onto their property. Interesting about eland, he said they get in close and parallel to the fence before hopping over.

Hearing protection while hunting Dangerous Game

Nobody suggest a suppressor ok! There are several options available. Some of which, your audiogram can actually be programmed in to really help speech understanding. Those options are higher priced than say a walkers game ear type. Did you have a budget in mind?

    Hide Quality

I’m not a taxidermist but have tanned hides. It’s very important to get them skinned, cooled, and salted as quickly as possible. Temperatures in Africa make this even more difficult as bacteria can grow very rapidly in hotter climates.

    Browning Love?

In the market for a 375 and have been looking for an M70 but these caught my attention. Any reason I should pick the Browning over the M70? Never owned a browning rifle. I suppose the Reeds sale is over or is there a code for $999? I do see they currently have a $75 rebate going, making it...

    Who did the work?
  42. S

Bull's eye taxidermy is almost done with my 2024 trophies!

Bullseye uses them because the brother owns African legacy logistics from what I was told, keeping it in the family. I used them and will use them again. No complaints and seemed reasonably priced although I didn’t get additional quotes. Kept it there for simplicity sake.

30yrs combat arms officer… wow, thank you for your service. I guess you do know the best way to utilize a suppressor in hunting scenarios. I didn’t miss your earlier comments. We simply disagree and that’s fine.

Suppressing a Dangerous Game rifle - 458 lott

Fair enough then, I’m not versed in the legalities of other countries. Still don’t think it’s pertinent to the discussion of practical suppressor use.
