22 or 6.5 Creedmore for Moose and Elk?

I'll never understand the argument that in a hunting situation at least that recoil is a significant factor in your ability to hit your target. Yes, after several shots on the bench while at the range you could start to develop a flinch and consistency will suffer. But I've never once felt the...

Best factory 30-06 ammo for plains game

On my hunt in Namibia I had a long discussion with a group of PHs one night and all but one said Federal Fusion were their favorite. The other (younger PH) said he preferred Barnes TTSX.

What Type of locks for Gun Case and International Travel?

Has anyone had a rifle stolen while traveling commercial airline? I can't imagine how someone could pull that off. I can see a baggage handler grabbing a wallet out of a bag or some jewelry. But how would that get away with walking out with a rifle? It just seems unlikely and very high risk...

Most Overrated Hunt and Most Underrated Hunt

I've never considered any hunt that I've been on underrated or overrated. Probably the most surprisingly challengingly and rewarding hunt was mountain zebra in Nambia. I'm surprised to hear so many comment that whitetail deer is overrated. Try still hunting a mature buck in the Adirondacks.

    NAMIBIA: First Safari Lessons Learned

Day 9 (June 9) We got up very early that day, 0400 I think. My PH wanted to try the water hole again for a few hours at first light. It was cold and after the sun came up it got very windy. We didn't last too long in the blind and soon got out to drive around looking for fresh tracks. The...

    NAMIBIA: First Safari Lessons Learned

Day 8 (June 8) When we got back to our main camp (June 7), in the mountains, a couple of the hunters had killed mountain zebras and were talking about how tough the hunt was and how far they had to walk through the mountains. Two hunters didn't get zebras and said they weren't back up. It was...

    NAMIBIA: First Safari Lessons Learned

Day 7 (June 7) After finding the loose bolts on my gun I wanted to shoot it just to ensure it was still on. Two rounds touching two inches high at 100 yards confirmed it was good to go. After rereading my post I've decided to spare y'all the details of my unsuccessful black wildebeest hunt...

    NAMIBIA: First Safari Lessons Learned

Yes I agree. Overall, I'm happy with the outfitter and I'd even hunt there again. The property that is his is amazing. I think it's over 110,000 acres of the most rugged terrain I've seen. The animals on this property were very difficult to hunt and very wild. If I went back I'd only want to...

    NAMIBIA: First Safari Lessons Learned

That night back at the new lodge I was going to wipe down my rifle and found where the "rattle" was coming from. The two main bolts that hold the barrel to the stock were about to fall out. Day five (June 5). Kudu was number one on my list and my PH assured me that we were going to get a great trophy. So after taking the Gemsbok back to the skinning shed we headed back out looking for Springbok. Boots for those with weak ankles

Most of these boots look like high-top sneakers to me. I prefer all leather. While I don't have weak ankles the Danner Fort Lewis has great ankle support. They are very durable, every pair I have owned has lasted me several years. I would get a new pair every other year for work and then use...

What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

You can't "bleed out" an animal that's dead.. We used to butcher a lot of animals on the farm growing up and the only time that we would bleed out is when my dad wanted blood sausage. In that case we'd stick the hog rather than shoot him. It was my job to try to catch all the blood in a bucket...

My Remington 7400 in 35 Whelen

My Remington 7400 in 35 Whelen

I received my 7400 Carbine in 30-06 as a gift in 1990. It was the only rifle I hunted with for over 30 years. I carried it between 20-30 days every deer season in the northeast. It has seen a lot of rainy, snowy days and probably didn't always get taken care of the way it should have been. It...

    1 shot kills

I've killed a lot of whitetail deer in eastern woodlands and I'd guess about 50% drop at the shot and the other 50% run off and die. But, I usually don't see them after they run and I find them after a very short tracking job. I've noticed that in a lot of the African hunting videos, I've...

Truck - what do you drive, and why?

My daughter has a half-ton Tundra and the ride is very stiff and harsh so I'd hate to see what the 3/4 ton rides like. I have a 2017 Ram Longhorn Laramie 1500 and it rides like a dream, has plenty of towing power and mileage is usually about 20 mpg. It's the only vehicle that I've ever purchased...
