My next hunt will be with my .303

I’d have to double check for the actual dates but I know one cousin got the paperwork done for recognition as a bicentennial farm.

What have you hunted with your .303?

Several whitetail. 150-174gr sp have dropped every one of them in their tracks. I don’t think the pile of 180s I have and the 215s I keep an eye out for will do any less.

    Rifle/ammo failure on Elephant

If I had regular access to a 470, I’d be shooting it somewhat regularly, regardless of the prospect of a hunt. It’s half the fun/point!

    Rifle/ammo failure on Elephant

I would be going through hundreds of dollars of ammunition in practice with the loads and rifle I planned to use if I were hunting pachyderm. Try to eliminate as many variables as is reasonable.

    FOR SALE: Weaver K4 B-60 crosshair, K3 B-60 crosshair, K3 B-60 post

I don’t see posts very often. If the rifle I want to wear it were anywhere near done, I’d snag it. Some folks are going to get some cool vintage scopes here. Great job on your photos, btw.

My next hunt will be with my .303

Mine is fit just about perfect to my frame and I can shoulder it, open my eyes and be looking right down the sights. While still hunting my grandfather’s farm (it’s been in our family a long, long time by US standards) there’s not much more exciting experience than finding deer and dropping them...

    What is your deadliest weapon???

Not sure there’s a bird I’ve killed with any other shotgun than my Nova pump. Waterfowl, a turkey, doves…all of that has been with the same 12ga. Plenty of squirrel in there too, but not exclusive to the Benelli. The Lee Enfield has accounted for more deer meat by volume, if not by headcount...

    7X57 or 7mm-08 or 308

If you’re going to build a suppressor host, the 308 cans are going to be the most plentiful when it comes to options in weight, size, mounting options, etc. Build it with the can in mind if that’s truly your intention. Slapping one on as an afterthought will diminish both the can and the host.

How many others map out their future firearm purchases?

Mausers and M1917 actions are acceptable impulse purchases! Buying a gun because “it’s a good deal” is a sure way to diminish the gun savings budget. I have a list and I try not to deviate from it without good reason. I’m to the point where a smaller number of purposely chosen guns is...

'Shooting the British Double Rifle' new 4th edition

As stated above, I’m not the biggest proponent of FedEx for media mail, but I’m very pleased with how BA packaged the book for shipping. The sealed bag for the book does not go unnoticed or unappreciated and the book arrived in perfect condition. Very pleased with the purchase from and...

'Shooting the British Double Rifle' new 4th edition

It crossed my mind to buy multiples for resale value, but I figured that after the demand for old editions they would be printing a healthy number, and there are enough books going for wild prices (looking at you, Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles) that I’d rather as many be sold for reasonable...

    Neighbors

Decorative boulders. When I worked a job that often required us to be very close to the edge of the road pavement, I would often stand to the side and lean out holding the spud bar like a walking stick. Sometimes that’s the only thing that would get traffic to slow down. They didn’t care to hit...

'Shooting the British Double Rifle' new 4th edition

Buffalo Arms was super easy to deal with over the phone when placing the order. I called them last week, they took my info, sent me tracking today. I’m really looking forward to the information in this edition. I haven’t been able to justify the cost of the others on the secondhand market...

Scope Mounts - Quick Detach System (M98 and/or Rigby .375H&H), Wanted - TY!

Scope Mounts - Quick Detach System (M98 and/or Rigby .375H&H), Wanted - TY!

Talley QD bases were going to be my own choice, but I don’t want to grind off the clip hump on the rear of the action if I don’t absolutely have to.

    What's your one favorite caliber?

303 British. I don’t see ever not having at least one rifle in this caliber. It works in every rifle format and a heavy for caliber bullet in a tapered and rimmed case is about as pretty as it gets.

Any Appetite for a New <$10K Double?

I’m all for making doubles more accessible, but for those two calibers I myself wouldn’t even be interested in the used market variety. Just because it’s got two barrels doesn’t mean it’s a double rifle. Caliber choice has a lot to do with that and neither of those, again just in my estimation...

Funding a Safari with Facebook Marketplace

It’s how I fund my “personal” hobbies. I enjoy antique and thrift stores. The other day I paid $20 for half of a duck call and had it sold online for $100 before I left the parking lot. I also just shipped out ~$20 worth of investment in board games for $300. Doesn’t matter how off beat the...

    Question for Verney-Carron Owners

I believe Noblex shares the same “footprint” as the Doctor red dots. They are not 1:1 compatible with Trinicon (or Aimpoint?) and I do not know how thick of an adapter is required to mate the crossover. If you have pictures of the rail and mount, they may beneficial in identifying what you...

HUNGARY: Roe Deer On The Hungarian Plain And Mouflon Of The Bakony Mountains - Or, How I Came To Despise A Bolt Action Equipped With A Suppressor

I don’t have extensive experience across platform/can types, so grain of salt and all that, but I believe suppressors are best utilized on platforms where their use is intended from the beginning. AR (and some bolt action) platforms with the Allen Engineering brake and collar system are one of...

    Let's See Some Hunting Knives

That model of Mora was probably the last production knife I bought and have been pleased with. It gets most of its use roughing out between the axe and the carving gouge stages when carving spoons and utensils. It’s also skinned a critter or two and had a place on my kit in the military.

    Let's See Some Hunting Knives

Unless it’s for a specific utility, I don’t even window shop mass manufactured knives anymore. Even if you have to save up for a while, buy a custom knife at least once in your life. It’s a very different experience and bringing it on hunts will add another layer of enjoyment to your experience...

505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

My understanding is that Bertram US was an importer. Bertram is still making brass and @RAVEN ROCKS PRECISION is working on becoming the new importer. Hopefully this is indeed the case, though there’s probably more speculation that usual with US imports in general st the moment.

Enjoying “game” in the off season - Recipe ideas and reports

Do you do these with geese or only ducks? I collect as much of the duck fat as possible, and would rather have the same quantity of fat than meat, though the meat is great. I haven’t been able to connect on geese yet so haven’t had much kitchen time with them.

    Mauser actions

I received mine a few weeks ago. While it isn’t as “voluminous” as I’d have hoped, even for a pamphlet, it has some very good information that is difficult to find online.
