    Elk hunting attire

I will always carry the weight for water and fresh socks. My grandfather, as well as many others’, no doubt, once told me to never skimp on boots or mattresses. “You’re usually in one if not the other.” I’ve carried this over to socks and pillows, as I find it wise advice to implement.

    Suggestions on durable hip boots?

This year I’m weighing my options for durable hip boots. Simple lightweight fishing waders aren’t going to hold up, but I’d like something for the marshes where it’s not deep enough to demand chest waders. One of the areas I scouted out recently requires a walk from the truck, downhill through...

Do You Still Gut Your Deer?

I field dress mine because I like to age them a bit, depending on temperature, and because I like to see the effects of terminal ballistics.

    Kindle Books Question

I’m a big proponent of physical books, but the size and battery life of the kindle (I have an older paperwhite model I’ve had for probably close to 10 years) combined with the backlight make it hard to turn down. With a little research you can figure out how to email files to the device that...

What would yall consider a “Lifetime worth of ammunition” for a double rifle?

I have infinity more double rifle books than I have double rifles, but I doubt anyone is going to tell you these aren’t good books to have along the way.

Would you benefit from a custom knife SHEATH?

Request granted. Lord, have mercy. It usually goes on my hunting “over belt”, but if I wear it on my pants belt on the left side it does indeed have to have the entire belt go through. For the future, I’ve thought about the same carry, but on my left side in order to make donning and doffing...

Would you benefit from a custom knife SHEATH?

I was under the weather yesterday and wasn’t able to get any pictures, or form a proper reply. The belt loop is almost continuous, it’s sewn together at the bottom of the sheath. I wear it edge down, candle forward, about the 10:30 position on my front left side. I can reach it right handed for...

My Selous trophies arrive to BC and cost breakdown of this endeavour :)

Those are exactly the types of trophies I would have a hard time leaving behind. Up against the typical cost of hunting them, that doesn’t seem too awful. Definitely not cheap, but I would think worth doing. Congrats on getting your trophies and getting them home. They look great.

Would you benefit from a custom knife SHEATH?

I’m right handed, and carry fixed blades on my support (left) side when on a belt. I like a cross draw for comfort when seated, but it also allows me to draw the knife easily with either hand. I find anything longer than a Leatherman to be uncomfortable in the vertical mounting.

Wargaming the NFA Supressor Freedom case

If they remain classified as a firearm, they remain protected by the 2A in states that would otherwise ban them. I’m in the SHALL NOT crowd, but the reality of the legal shenanigans never makes anything straightforward for those wishing to comply.

    458 SOCOM AR

Yep. It’s a good choice. AR15 platform, not too finicky, great big honkin’ holes. As a management tool, a guy could do a lot worse for a lot more money.

    Good Gun Deals This Week

This seems like a lower ask than I would think, if the provenance is there. A left hand 9.3/404 from Col. Charles Askins. Cool piece from a collecting or historical perspective, but maybe I’m the only one who thinks so since they’re offering an option for a new 404 J barrel as well...

Has anyone used a Witt Manufacturing suppressor?

Looked at them from the dealer side before all the recent NFA changes. They were iffy on value for cost then, and now my opinion is that there are much better performing options out there for not much more money.

Jim Green Boots- Help me decide

It does, thank you. I had no idea they were on there when I bought a pair. I got the barefoot safety toe, which isn’t an option on govx, but my next pair may be the razorbacks and this saves a chunk. Much appreciated.

    Cur dog breed?

I had a shelter/rescue male when I was in Texas. Black Mouth Cur/German Shepherd. One of the most athletic, squirrel chasing dogs you could hope for out of a shelter. All around good dog, definitely would have been a hunter had I more time and opportunity to work him on that front. Anecdotal...

Tennessee Hunters New Regs for 2026 - 27 hunting season

All joking aside, if the byproducts of livestock nutritional needs are more helpful than harmful for the wildlife population, I see it as a winning formula. If you don’t have chickens to follow your cattle, theoretically the turkeys could reduce pest populations as they munch fly larvae in the...

    How would you run it?

Another option with its own issues is to agree on a quota for an established group of hunters, much like a hunting lease is done many places in the US. The expectation is that they police themselves and the areas they hunt/camp. They may pay less to police themselves, or more for exclusive...

What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

It’s a shame it happens, for a lot of reasons, but contraband, even a piece a snare wire, confiscated while hunting would be a great trophy and conversation piece.

What four calibres would you choose

303 British 300 H&H 404 Jeffery 505 Gibbs The 505 has “limited practical use”, whatever that means, so, assuming plinking would still be affordable under such a regime, I’d consider swapping it for a 5.56 or 22 Hornet. 5.56 covers a wide margin of plinking, varmint and other hunting, target...

    P14 DG rifles

I’ve been keeping an eye out for a Remington/Winchester M1917 action that hasn’t been run through a dull bandsaw.
