    Any 41 magnum shooters?

Hi Wyatt I think you'll enjoy the 41 mag! While Rugers often benefit from a little trigger work, the S&W is usually good to great out of the box. The 41 is more pleasant to shoot than the 44 mag in my experience. I shoot and enjoy them both. The simple bullet choice for the reloader is the...

    BFR 454 Casull

The BFR is heavily built for regular use of heavy hunting loads. For a walk-around revolver for snake shot you might like a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 4 5/8 or 5.5". This would save about a pound on the hip. Another nice option is the S&W 69. It would handle snake loads and lighter 44 mag/ 44...

I would give Lee Precision a call and talk to them about it. They have been very helpful to me in the past. They might even make you a full length die if you send them some fired brass.

    Opinions please: Pros/Cons of .375 Ruger vs .375 H&H

I think short stroking is a risk with any bolt action in a high stress situation. I try to emphasize hitting the bolt stop firmly on my back stroke with my bolt guns when I shoot offhand and off sticks. Most handloaders don't like to do this because it really flings your brass!

    Reloading for Dangerous Game

I do the vast majority of my hunting and shooting with hand loaded ammunition and I've done this many years. I feel confident in my ability to put together high quality, reliable ammunition, custom made for my rifle. The loading components and die settings are proven over many practice...

    Lightweight .375 H&H

I agree. I have a number of 375s that I like to play with, but the Talkeetna is the one I grab when I go hunting. Honestly, the stock design and recoil pad are so good that I find it more comfortable to shoot than a standard Pre-64 Model 70 in 375 H&H.

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

I enjoy both of these cartridges. I happen to own a lightweight 375 H&H that I like to hunt. I find it very easy to load my 375 to modern 9.3x62 ballistics with low pressure and long brass life. These loads work great on game (no surprise). On the other hand, reaching some of the claimed...

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

Hi Rule 303, I appreciate you sharing your friend's experience but I am not sure what your comment actually means "...he contended you can pick the difference between 9.3x62 and the 375 H&H." I would love to know his thoughts regarding these two cartridges when used on large game like wild...

    Handgun for wolf protection

For a new shooter that is predominantly a hiker I would recommend the S&W 317. This is a 3" aluminum frame 22 LR. This gun is super light at 12 ounces - but still fun to shoot. The first goal is learning basic firearm competence - the 22 is fun and cheap to shoot. The second goal is having a...

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

Hi Ruraldoc, Which CZ 9.3x62 do you have? I'm curious how you find the handling of the CZ 9.3x62 as compared to the Model 70 Alaskan in 375 H&H? I've been surprised how handy the Alaskan is. Thanks, Bush Buck

For those that can't afford the Rigby Big Game or Heym Express, What's the next best thing?

Yes, if you added a classic banded front sight you would also have to refinish at least the barrel and sights. Plus your cut and crown. That would probably get you to $500 pretty quick. You get so much for your money with a Kimber 375 H&H that I have hesitated to do any custom work.

For those that can't afford the Rigby Big Game or Heym Express, What's the next best thing?

Hi AS, I have hunted with a Kimber 375 quite a bit. I am a fan of the Talkeetna and the Caprivi. I think they are terrific hunting rifles. In my experience they may or may not need some gentle tweaking to get optimal feeding and ejection ( this is pretty common with off the shelf rifles )...

Eland Cartridges for recoil sensitive shooter?

I think it's terrific that you're planning this hunt with your son! I really enjoy tracking Eland. The tricky part with tracking is that your shot opportunity will probably not be ideal. A quartering shot is likely. I wouldn't do this with a 6.5mm. The minimum for me would start at 308...

For those that can't afford the Rigby Big Game or Heym Express, What's the next best thing?

I enjoy 375s and other mediums and I like to explore the available rifles. Any of the production rifles may need tweaking to feed and function perfectly (I've heard some say they've had similar experience with high end customs). I think the Kimber Caprivi is a very nice rifle that can be...

    First Dangerous game capable rifle

I think a 375 H&H is a great choice and very versatile - especially if you can reload custom ammo for different needs. The trick with 375 is finding a rifle that meets your needs - some of them are pretty heavy for hunting big hills. However, if I had the opportunity to pick up a nice 98...

    Bob Nelson 35 Whelen

I shot a bunch of the 235 Speer bullets when I was learning to handle 375 H&H. It is a great practice bullet. I recall a member saying that he loads them to 2600 and they work perfectly on deer. That doesn't really sound like an elk bullet to me - though I'm sure it would work if you could...

    Bob Nelson 35 Whelen

That's one of the reasons I like the 375 H&H so much. It can be loaded accurately to modern 9.3x62 or 35 Whelen performance. Components are generally more available and the 235, 250, 260 and 270 grain bullets from Barnes, Nosler and Swift are excellent. 250 at 2600 is not only more pleasant...

I didn't want to write about my recent Winchester 70 experience until I had the rifle to the range a couple of times. I bought an unfired Model 70 Alaskan 375 H&H sold by TOBY458. If I understand the serial number code correctly it was manufactured this year. The rifle arrived in like new...

New Production Winchester Model 70 in 375 H&H back in-stock

I've owned and shot several 375 H&Hs - probably my favorite cartridge. 6" groups indicate a problem for sure. 2" is usually easy to achieve. I'm happy with 1.5" If you have taken off the stock ( and maybe if you haven't ) you may want to do it again and make sure everything goes back together...

Controlled round feed for Dangerous Game

Regarding the Sako 85 I think of the Sako as a partial CRF too - but that's only in direct comparison to a well tuned mauser type action. The classic CRF action picks up and "controls" the cartridge much earlier in the bolt cycle. The bolt face grips the cartridge before it is chambered. The...

Controlled round feed for Dangerous Game

I have had to tune feeding on both push feed and CRF - but CRF more frequently. There are handling differences between CRF and push feed. If you choose push feed for DG then you should probably shoot push feed throughout your practice and even when hunting at home. The main thing that...

    9.3x62

These are some generalizations based on my loading: I have found that Varget often performs best when the appropriate load results in some compression. This often occurs with .223 and .308. On the other hand, H4895 often gives better accuracy than Varget if there is space left in the case. 60...

    Mediums that perform

I agree with Doug that, from an African hunting point of view, a medium is larger than .30 and smaller than .40. From a practical standpoint .338 to .375. If my history is correct the 375 H&H has been the most popular and most widely available medium for about 75 years now (I'm speaking of it's...

Single shot 35 whelen as my medium

    Mediums that perform

I'm curious how many others have seen this difference? In my experience, switching from a 30-06 to a 375 H&H dramatically shortened the distance big game traveled after the shot. This occurred even when the 375 was loaded with 250 grain bullets at 9.3x62 velocities. I've seen it enough times...

    Big bore recoil

Let me start by saying that I don't claim to be a big bore expert - but I have a friend who shoots a 470 NE. At first he was a little discouraged because it would leave him with a headache and bruises. However, he persisted by shooting maybe 6 rounds with each trip to the range and within 6...

    Unplanned Dangerous Game Hunting?

Like me, I think that most of us plan to hunt plains game the first time ( or every time ) we go to Africa due to the expense associated with dangerous game hunting. But I'm curious: Have any of you been offered a great deal on a Cape Buffalo hunt after arrived for a plains game hunt? Thanks...

    9.3x62

Thanks for all the great responses. It's apparent that most of the African hunting is done with the 285 range bullets - which seems appropriate. 225 gr Hornady in 375HH load data help

I think that the 8th edition Hornady data is more useful than the old Speer data. I find that when I shoot short, light bullets for caliber that they usually perform best when loaded to the same velocity as a standard load for that cartridge. So if 375 H&H is usually running around 2500-2600...

    9.3x62

I was debating 250 vs 285 myself. It seems that the cartridge would have a nice "point blank" trajectory to 200 yards for plains game using the 250 grain bullet. I imagine that your rifle is pretty light so the 250 would be helpful for recoil as well.

    BFR 454 Casull

Hi Aussie Hunter, Your rear sight is raised enough that it may be at risk from a hard knock. You may want to see if Magnum Research offers a lower front sight. If not you can carefully file it down to meet point of aim with your heaviest bullets (lower the rear first). If you plan to switch...

A nice step up when you're ready for a hunting load for deer size game is the 250 XTP with a midrange charge of IMR 4227. I load this for 44 magnum performance in 454 brass. It's accurate and easy to shoot in a big revolver.

    Wanted 375 H&H Bolt Gun

Hi wyobarrister, I have a couple of nicer 375s that I'd consider selling: I have a Pre-64 375 H&H that is in very nice condition. It seems to be all original. I don't think it's ever been scoped - but is factory tapped. I bought it to shoot but couldn't bring myself to scope it so I kept it...

    Which CZ550?

I like your scope choice. You will notice your front sight less on low power if you remove the front sight hood. The main advantage of the levers is being able to switch back and forth from scope to irons quickly. The same scope rings without the levers will usually do the same thing if you...

    Advice for my rifle

I would definitely try Winchester first. If you call they will probably ask you to send it in. They may even pay for the shipping. I know that Ruger does. If that doesn't work and you like the rifle then have it re-barreled and bedded by a good smith - that's a pretty reliable fix. You may get...
