Things you survived, but probably shouldn't have

When I was 19, I had meningitis that almost killed me. I had days of such a terrible headache and two visits to my PCP who refused to think it was anything other than a sinus infection. Eventually, I couldn’t get out of bed or even move my eyes without severe pain. My dad took me to the ER and...

    Which old school American rifle?

I think you mean Sedgley. There were many Springfields sporterized by Sedgley and Niedner post WW2. They are pretty decent rifles but for some reason don’t have much of a following. Neither were up to G&H standards from what I’ve seen.

Want To Buy Lefty 375 H&H, 404 Jeffrey or 416 Rigby

This is an interesting rifle although not the caliber you mentioned. Needs a little finishing and the octagon barrel isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but may go for quite a reasonable price...

    School me on M98 actions

Of course, if you don’t want to commission a full build, remember, as mentioned before, that any 30’06 or 8mm Mauser can be rebored and chambered to the 9.3 and a 9.3X57 is usually just a rechamber away. This is the most close effective way to get what you want I’d think.

    School me on M98 actions

Yes, the 1909 Argentines (DWM which I believe they all are) are a very good basis for a custom. For a 9.3X62, probably no rail work will be needed. Magazine length should be good from the start. They have a nice hinged floor plate with the release in the trigger bow which is nice IMO. The...

    Old Teddy Roosevelt Book

My Roosevelt books are really worn! Must have been read many many times in the last 115yrs! I really love collecting old books even if they’re not in perfect condition. My African Game Trails is from 1926

    Which old school American rifle?

I wouldn’t say that. There are all sorts of period photos of folks using 1895s in Africa and one would surmise that in Africa, the 405 was more popular in the ‘95 than any other chambering. As far as an “Old School” American rifle for Africa, the ‘95 in 405 Winchester is hard to beat. Maybe an...

    NEED HELP Mystery 375 H&H

Yes It is interesting though, the “stripper clip slots” are common to most of the magnum length actions but I don’t believe there are clips that would work with any of the common “magnum” class cartridges. Sort of dispels the notion that the clip slots are unique to military actions.

    Favorite Darling Small-Mid Bore Double?

I had Bertram brass for the two 350s. The Rigby was proofed for the 225gr bullet so the closest I had was 200gr and honestly, the right bore was so worn that it was never going to group both barrels with a single loading. The best plan for that rifle would have been to rebore and regulate to the...

    Favorite Darling Small-Mid Bore Double?

    A Westley 400/350 I owned a while back. A Johann Springer 8X57 Rimmed that I still have - a wonderful rifle. A Rigby 400/350 - also sold… Manton 22 Hi Power - son’s rifle. And my goofiest little double - a W.W. Greener 310

    NEED HELP Mystery 375 H&H

It for sure is a Rigby in as much as it was a Rigby at birth. The barrel - sights etc. are very much like a TypeB Oberndorf Mauser sporting rifle while the many original Rigby barrels I’ve looked at have more ”express” style rear sights similar to the TypeA Mauser. I suppose a Rigby customer...

    NEED HELP Mystery 375 H&H

BaxterB is on the right track. It is (or was) an original Rigby using the step ring action. This action was the very first magnum length Mauser ‘98 and Rigby was the only customer for them. It would have been originally chambered for the 400-350 Rimmed cartridge. It was quite common for these...

    FS- 9.3x57 Mauser

I must resist!! Also, I must add that the BUGNRU proofs, according to Speed, mean that the rifle was returned to Mauser for major repair or alteration. This is a TypeB (metal wise) made in 1924-25 The 9.3X57 is probably one of if not the rarest chambering in an Oberndorf Mauser and one such...

I’ve wondered that when such a rifle is scoped and the mounts soldered to the steel tube, is the sighting done in the white and then the mounts and tube blacked when the rifle is? I suppose this is well before charging the tube with something other than dry air was done. Anyway, another great...

Holland & Holland launches its Take Down Rifle

The best “tool less” version of this type of takedown bolt action is the Newton design. The floor plate is integral with the front action screw so one simply hinges open the floor plate and rotates it to unscrew. Much better than a coin or T-handle as used in this video.

    Leather scope case

Haven’t had one made but do have a couple original ones. These are just leather with no lining. I think you may run into snagging issues if you get one fleece lined at least I’m sure you would with old claw mounts - maybe some new designs are sleeker and wouldn’t snag but I’d do a little...

Need a new custom for Africa!

I may add, that the photo I posted above shows how Mauser styled/scaled their TypeA’s. The stocking tailored for each rifle according to caliber. Modern Rigbys are cookie cutter rifles in comparison. If a Highland Stalker is of interest, do yourself a favor and search out an original TypeA which...

Need a new custom for Africa!

Well, Mauser thought enough of the 30’06 that they offered it in, I believe, all of their sporting models way pre WW2. Here’s my square bridge TypeA in 30’06 (middle rifle) along with a 10.75X68 top and a 6.5 Portugese below. A good 30’06 with a twist that will handle 200gr bullets would be not...

Need a new custom for Africa!

.280 Ackley is a good cartridge but nothing really special about it inside 250yds. I think that all of the attributes of the 280AI are well covered by the 338WM with the benefit of a heavier projectile delivered at similar ranges. I wouldn’t choose the 338WM either for an ultimate custom build...

    Game Meat

I’ve thought the same. I could imagine combining two hunt packages or adding animals to get your trophy but to also cull some impala etc. to feed the camp. So many classic tales of Safari include “collecting” an animal on the way back to camp for the pot. That would be pretty cool.

For Sale Ruger No. 1 450/400

Good man! You won’t regret owning a No.1 in such a classic cartridge. There are so many loads that one can use in a single shot that won’t go in a double that makes a rifle such as this way more versatile than most realize.

    What I "should have bought"/What I "shouldn't have sold"

I don’t have many regrets in selling guns - maybe a Daniel Fraser takedown 7X57 and a Westley Richards 425 - that was a good rifle. Selling vehicles is my weak spot. Sold a BMW 3.0CS for $4K and a 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint for $7K. Both were cool cars. Had a ‘78 Porsche 911 with a steel...

    470 Reduced Practice Loads

The first step, I’d suppose, is to source the correct bullets which in the 470 isn’t as easy as it is for a 450 but a 475 Linebaugh or 480 Ruger bullet should work just fine. Try a standard charge of powder which regulates in your rifle with the 500gr bullet and as close to a 375gr bullet as you...

    470 Reduced Practice Loads

I think that today we get away from the fact that many early cartridge doubles weren’t meant to be dedicated “Dangerous Game” rifles. Even 500-450 Holland & Holland Royals were expected to serve something like double duty using full power 480gr loads for DG but also the 365gr loads for game...
