What caliber would you bring back from the dead?

Nothing at all wrong with the 9X57! In the period ammunition catalogs, the 9mm was something like 5grs less bullet and a couple hundred FPS off the 318WR and we all know it killed everything like greased lightning!! I was told by a well known gunmaker that the 9X57 Mauser was the preferred...

Newly Acquired Jeffery .333 Nitro Express

It is much like the one in either Winfer's or Kirton's book. I think at the time I got it from Mark Crudgington, he didn't really want it published so I just emailed him to see if he's OK with my sharing it. The only ledger book that survived the Blitz has just the last ten or so Gibbs...

What caliber would you bring back from the dead?

Sure it could be done. Really, the 375 2-1/2” would be just about ideal in a Ruger No.1

What caliber would you bring back from the dead?

9.5X57 or 375 Rimless Nitro Express for sure. 35 Winchester too. The 350 Griffin & Howe deserves a comeback too. Of all the ‘35s I think the 35 Newton was way before it’s time and today would be called the 35 Ruger. That is a fantastic cartridge!

Reloading can be dangerous and scary if you don't do it right

I’ll throw this little tidbit out here which has me scratching my head. I have a Charles Lancaster Mauser in 280NE (280 Ross to you and I) This rifle shot beautifully with the few original Kynoch rounds I had as well as my own reloads to Ross Seyfreid’s recipe. All good. Well, when I shot the...

Reloading can be dangerous and scary if you don't do it right

Why would QL give such differing powder weights for the Hornady (37gr) and the Woodleigh (34.5gr) when they are the same weight and almost the same ogive/nose profile?

    Small ring mauser

I believe there were two versions of the Mexican Mauser. IIRC, the first few thousand (1902) were made by DWM and have a Mauser 98 bolt shroud and flag safety. That was carried over to the 1910 Mexican Mauser. The later contract run (1936) have a Springfield style bolt knob/safety. I'm not sure...

Single Shot Saturday - Show us your Single Shots!

They are definitely filed down to the metal as they are smooth with the contours of the plates. I think that you are correct in the notion of fitting with tall heads, indexing for a new slot, taking down the head and cutting new slots. Then, these newly slotted screws were filed down flush with...

Single Shot Saturday - Show us your Single Shots!

Correct. Much of the scouting and hunting was done on horseback and it was common for a fall or drop from a horse to result in a broken stock. Back then, that pretty much put the rifle out of commission entirely. I believe that Selous himself had a stock on a muzzle loader break through the...

Single Shot Saturday - Show us your Single Shots!

The plates were offered on George Gibbs Farquharson rifles and it is believed that maybe 50 or so were sold with the plates. Some say as low as 20 but I have seen rifles fit with them enough to guess it's double or more than that many. The metal (malleable iron I believe) is formed to the...

Wanted 450 NE brass, dies and shell holders

Before I got a rock chucker, I used the 450-400 shell holder with a feeler gauge under the case. The thin rim shell holder I have is one of the old wide RCBS ones that are too big in diameter to work on the Spartan press I had before the RC2

    475 No2, how usable?

As usable as any other 450 to 500 class cartridge. Will kill as well as any of them - that is if you can source components which is not easy these days. I'd suspect it will need .483" bullets.

    Caliber 30-30 use in Africa???

The Winchester Model 54 is the classic choice for a 30-30 bolt action. I have one that is a bit of a mongrel and am always looking for a really nice one to replace it. The 30-30 really blooms with a wider choice of bullets rather than those appropriate for a lever action.

    Advise please..?

For sure big Elk and Deer sell better here in the west than African heads. I think that I'm in the minority here as I don't really care that I didn't hunt any of the African heads I have in my home. They are still great to look at and I think important to have around children just as artwork and...

    Proper Gin and Tonic

My go to is Tanqueray, fresh lime and regular store brand tonic water. About two ounces of gin, 1/4 slice of lime - squeezed into the gin and dropped in - add ice and finish with the tonic water so I'd guess that would be about 2-3oz of that. Give a little stir with a knife or whatever is handy...

    Help to reload

I haven't had a 3-1/8" rifle but have reloaded the No.2 quite a bit. The usual smokeless load is with 4198 (H or IMR) and a filler - I use backer rod. A good regulating load for the one double I had was 54grs H4198 and a paper patched 450gr bullet. I would think that, if your rifle is nitro...

    Rifle Quarter Rib Purpose

One definite benefit of a QR is to add a little more weight to a rifle and place that weight between the hands. Of course, aesthetically, they can either hit the mark or miss it entirely. A too tall QR is goofy looking to me.

Ruger safari magnum. Good, Bad and Ugly?

I've had a couple RSMs and they are OK. Well, I guess for the money they are pretty good but Rugers have always been blocky, heavy and ugly IMO. Next to a magnum Mauser there is no comparison. Peep sites

    Peep sites

It doesn’t work that way. I had an original 333 Jeffery with their patent peep and it was graduated for 100/200/300yds (iirc) so you simply dialed to that distance. I’ll see if I can find a picture of that rifle when I get home in a couple days.
  44. Huvius

    Peep sites

A ghost ring and a peep sight work on two different (and one the same) visual principles. The one similarity is that when one looks through a hole, small or a bit larger, it is a natural occurrence to thoughtlessly center the target in the hole. Target centered in the hole and front bead...

    Peep sites

Peep sights were often offered on all sorts of English rifles - even on what we would consider “African” rifles. W.J. 475 Nitro Express - Experience

That is assuming your hammer gun is self cocking - most are not. I agree overall though that being able to SEE that a gun is safe has a benefit. Most hammerless guns don’t have cocking indicators and those that do are for the shooter, not obvious enough to see from a few feet away.
  48. Huvius

    475 Nitro Express - Experience

I’ve never heard of such a thin either. There is no reason that a hammer gun would be any more or less reliable than a hammerless as the cocking action is generally all the same. One real benefit of a hammer gun is that in the event of a misfire, one can simply recook the hammer and try again -...

Rookhawk, did your friend get the 3-1/4” Manton that Cabelas had? Decent looking rifle that I thought a lot about. He can use 450 brass and the 3” RCBS dies work just fine too as the bore of the die is long enough for the longer brass. I have a Jeffery Farquharson 475No.2 (on offer at...
