The 404 Jeffery history and related information

It was - I should have mentioned that. The Speed book is invaluable to any Mauser fan. It has the magazine box and floorplate dimensions of the various chamberings Mauser offered as well. It's quite remarkable that Mauser tailored their rifles for different cartridges that way. Different...

The 404 Jeffery history and related information

That is true - I should have said that only Magnum actions and Oberndorf made 318s had the straddle floorplate. That barreled action is a 318 as mentioned in the book. I don't know why the 318's standard length action was made that way. All very interesting to say the least...

The rifle Remington SHOULD have made, 30 Express .375 H&H

Griffin & Howe used this action for a few rifles - at least one being a 404 Jeff. I have a G&H on the same action in 333 G&H Super Magnum. That is really a 350 G&H necked down which is of course a 375H&H necked down. Years ago I inquired about the rifle but they weren’t in a position to look it...

The 404 Jeffery history and related information

I have seen one magnum length action in a standard length stock before. All that’s really obvious is a gap in the wood behind the sides of the receiver ring which could be filled with a fillet of wood. Then the magazine width and depth would also need to be addressed. The one I saw had the...

You sure? Magnum at the top. This illustrates the longer receiver ring better than I can explain it.

The 404 Jeffery history and related information

No, it is not. Just look how much more the receiver ring extends past the lug on Nick’s action. That is because the screw hole spacing is the same (or close) but the OAL of the action is longer.

Action lug - meaning the lug underneath the receiver ring where the front screw goes into the bottom of the action.

The 404 Jeffery history and related information

They were't available when the 404 was invented but were later and Jeffery made some of their 333s and 404s on magnum actions and Mauser made some Type A 404s on their magnum length action as well. The giveaway is the straddle floorplate (the plate extending back around the sides of the trigger...

The 404 Jeffery history and related information

Your barreled action is an original magnum length Mauser made in 1932. The front sight is very 'Jeffery" style but I'd be surprised if it is a Jeffery built rifle that the name or address isn't on the top of the barrel. The number on the bolt doesn't match the action so, it was swapped at some...

    Gunsmith for Double rifle issue

So, unloaded, the rifle lever and hinge operate smoothly and normally? If you want to check the cocking, hold a dowel down each barrel against the breech face and dry fire the gun without cases or snap caps in the chambers and then open as normal - this will tell you if it’s purely a pin drag...

    CBL Banned??

Many here have said that the bones are sold for some traditional Chinese medicine. I don’t know what the demand is overall but I do know it has become a substitute for tiger bones. Isn’t it plausible that if CBL shooting is banned that that demand would then be satisfied with poached lions and...

    CBL Banned??

Why don't we just stop calling them "hunts" Separate them from wild hunting and let them remain as what is really a livestock/agricultural exercise. Curious why cape buffalo have the same minimum caliber requirement as Rhino, Hippo and Elephant?

Hypo? Of course... but the animal is hypothetical...as nobody has ever actually shot one... Jokes aside, the 375 has always seemed like a bridge cartridge to me - meaning, a bridge between the regular medium game cartridges and the true big bore DG cartridges. Adequate for Buffalo and up, yeah...

Can you reload a single shot fast enough for DG?

Bummer! I hear of losing Buffalo a lot more than I used to. Is that the case or just more hunting going on and the averages are the same? It’s my understanding that most PHs disabled their ejectors because after the shots, the last thing you needed was a metallic click or even worse big brass...

    Traditional Mauser Sporter Questions

A 1909 Argentine is an excellent choice - nice bottom metal very much like an Oberndorf sporting rifle on those. You’ll need to silver solder or micro weld a protrusion on the trigger bow release lever and trim the little wing on the bolt release but other than that and reshaping the bolt...

    Traditional Mauser Sporter Questions

A Husqvarna Mauser would be a good place to start. A horn forend tip or a shortened forend in the Rigby style and express sights are about all one needs to be quite similar to a pre war Rigby. I’ve thought of doing similar but the one I own is probably too nice to rework.

    One nice rifle under $15,000

If a bolt gun, I’d like to have a Hoffman 375 on a magnum Mauser. A decent double such as a Manton or Lang in 470 could be found around $15K. I’d really like to have a long bar Webley 470.

Single Shot Saturday - Show us your Single Shots!

The 450 3-1/4” would have been so much better with a thicker rim. It’s remarkable that a thicker rim wasn’t adopted when it became a cordite cartridge. That would have obviated any accidental use in BPE 450s and would have aided immensely in extraction! Then the Jeffery 3” (thick rim) and the...

Correct. The standard powder charge for the 450 3-1/4” was 120grs with a variety of bullet weights. I suppose the lighter bullets required a taller wad stack to keep the same OAL

Yeah, my 500NE single shot is 10lb7oz. I don’t know why or how a double would end up lighter than that. Wood selection makes a big difference. Here I am shooting my 500 and recoil is manageable at that weight with a proper stock geometry.

Developing a .404 Jeff Cast Bullet plinking / practice load

For my bullets made from 40S&W brass, I was lucky enough to have a paper patch bullet mold that the brass fits so can pour the core rather than push it in. You could flux the inside of the brass to get more of a “bonded” bullet but I don’t think that’s needed. Another cheap option is to take an...

Developing a .404 Jeff Cast Bullet plinking / practice load

Round the nose, or even push them into a regular FLS die to use the shoulder to form a bit of an ogive on the bullet. I’ve done this for my 10.75X68 which is the same dia as the 404. Works great but is a little time consuming. Any cast .416 bullet can be paper patched to .424” quite easily but...

Single Shot Saturday - Show us your Single Shots!

The two are very different. The 450NE is larger at the base and has a thinner rim. The 450NE was originally a black powder cartridge just as the 45-120 was (is) and the 450BPE was often charged with 120grs of black so the powder charges would be the same although the 450 was generally loaded...

Ruger M77 love them or hate them?

I had two different RSMs in 416 Rigby and an Express 338 Win Mag. Those are gone and the only 77 I own is a ,223 odd one with blued metal in the paddle stock. Generally, I don’t like Rugers all that much. I think the actions look like they were taken off the line with a few machining operations...

    Good Gun Deals This Week

I don’t agree - and my opinion on this subject is worth about $.02 on a good day… The way I see it, bringing attention to an auction item is not much different than building up a straight “for sale” item. I’ve often seen it here (and on other forums), where an item is put up at price ‘X’ and...

    500 Express rifle question

It is a good weight for a nitro rifle and a good looking gun as well. I’d have to look at more 500s from the era to form a solid opinion of the stamps on the flats.

    500 Express rifle question

My thinking is that it is a 500BPE but later stamped with the 68 / 570 load. If it was done in England it would be reproofed as such. What are more details on the rifle? Hoyem mentions a 70gr cordite - 570gr bullet load but the usual load width the 570gr bullet was 80gr cordite.
  44. Huvius

    500 Express rifle question

My guess that it is something of a nitro for black load or a “light cordite” load as they were known. I see it’s a Jones under lever rifle so quite strong enough for a LC load all other requirements met.

Today are you more likely to buy an older rifle or brand new one ?

You can do the same with a 100yr old Mauser ‘98 bolt. Too many people think that precision in manufacturing is some new development. Take a look at grand complication watches. Precision hasn’t made much advancement in the last 150yrs or so.

“Show me a new rifle or shotgun of equivelant quality and I'll make a reasonable value judgement. I really don’t see any reason to buy any rifle newer than about 1938. That said, I have had a couple vintage (pre 1920) rifles restored which makes them as close to a new rifle as I will likely ever own. Well, wait a second.. I have bought two new Pedersoli muzzle loaders and a Chiappa mini...
