- Luzianne iced tea with sweet n'low (not sugar)...year around
- Classic Coke, Mtn Dew or Sprite...year around...I typically really don't like diet sodas but maybe I should try the diet Mtn Dew based on what is being said here?
- no coffee ever...really dislike the taste of it but it smells good...
When I hunted leopard in Zim (2 years ago), I shot a lot of impala for bait...maybe a dozen. They were at a reduced rate as we were shooting ewes, cull rams, etc. One time we came across a nice ram and I shot it for bait but had it skinned for a mount. That animal was charged at the trophy...
Ah, thanks! Just over 48 inches. He wasn't even the one we were after! Here he is below the one I was really going for...which is the only buff that has ever given me the shakes. I chased him all over that mountain and never got him. He's still alive up there.
I was also going to load my own version with TSX but Hornets can be finicky and just for kicks, I tried the Sellier FMJs first. They had good accuracy so I stopped there. For those who like to tinker, finding a good TSX load could be worthwhile.
It's good to hear some mention of timing on leopards. I went too late on mine...late October and early November and the warthogs were dropping their young. It was a cancellation hunt and I didn't have options but I believe it had a negative impact on the outcome.
I have used Sellier 55 grain FMJ on multiple T10 with good results. It would not be my first choice for a longer shot like on klippies. It did not create excessive damage on any of the thin skinned night game either but that's also due to shot selection. You can see from these photos (some of...
Good question…ranch cat signifies that it is killing cattle and livestock on someone’s ranch. No fence can hold a leopard so it’s not about that but where the cat is getting meat from. Ranch cats have been chased and harassed a lot as they have a direct impact on ranch revenue. Some of the...
You bring up a good point. Wild Africa has its odd moments also. We had the Zim army come through camp on my first trip over 20 years ago with CMS. CMS was pissed of course as they had made arrangements to avoid such situations with their contracts and govt connections. I’ve certainly seen...
Wow….this was not what I was expecting to hear from that legendary leopard PH. Of course it’s hunting…but I was hopeful for a different outcome. Sounds like you are NOT giving up! Also sounds like you had a great trip, which is much more the point. Curious to hear more. Maybe a phone call...
It’s a good question but there are different angles within that question. I’m not a collector but I would like to see some different sub-species of buff…or bushbuck…or duikers. I’m making plans to see more parts of Africa and I definitely want some jungle experiences. The costs vary somewhat...
Some open their fore end channel but I don’t like that option. You can also get a different stock set. This applies to the 223 match barrel only for sale here. The 257 barrel is the smaller contour.
3 + 1. For all the guys who want to hunt ele or dry land hippo, this is the best alternative to a double I have found. I like doubles BUT this as good or better depending on what you are used to. If you aren’t going to practice with double triggers and quick reloading, this is the better...
Shock killing animals only works if you are very precise in the application…brain or spine but not in all cases...you can’t shock a croc. I’ve turned their spine into gravel and they kept breathing for 30 min and blinking at you and following you with their eyes…jaws opening and closing. Are...
300 win mag is perfect for most PG hunts with a 180 premium bullet like TTSX. You’re not going to see long shot opportunities in most place and even if you do, that combo is great. Something like 3-12x is perfect. Just keep the scope turned down to lowest power while hunting. If a longer...
Ahhh my old rifle. It is beautiful and feeds well. Let me add to the description and a bit of Sterling history….
It utilizes the NECG slide in front sight so there are multiple options for load development, it will come with a solid brass bead, and a brass bead with flip up ivory. It has a...
Congrats on taking both bears. Hopefully your son wants to go again. I’m surprised they didn’t want shoulder shots on the bears. That’s a deadly shot to take out both shoulders.
I will probably take a suppressor with me next year when I'm going for klippie and Vaal rhebok. It also helps a little bit on baboon control. They have their place.
Not tired of the reports! Thanks for the updates. On the tracking, how much leaf litter is under the trees and is that an issue? I would think that's another positive to having more rain as it would soften the litter under the canopy.
If I use them they will typically be Talley or with some older guns they are claw mounts. I also use the Blaser R8 mount quite a bit. The bigger point is that I don't recall ever removing a scope in the field to use irons. On DG rifles, I always have a 1x or 1.5x on the low end and just keep...
Have you ever seen one on a PH’s DG rifle? Iron sights on bolt guns and suppressors don’t go together. Also, DG rifles are about simplicity and lack of gadgetry. Many pros will remove the slings (if they have one) when following up on DG. Any extra pieces that can catch on something or...
Suppressors are valid options on PG rifles with the caveat of carry and balance issues as noted by others. Where I think they do NOT belong is on DG rifles.
I just realized where I had seen Christophe Morio’s name in a book….Boddington in his Buffalo 2 book says that Christophe was run over by a savanna buffalo that slashed his throat and windpipe open. Lucky to be alive from that nasty episode. Those savanna buff have a much narrower horn...
Anyone can make a commitment to handling a bigger gun...but to prescribe that it needs to happen in a broad stroke is another thing altogether. Cowboy up?!? Terrible advice.
If you haven't figured it out yet, people with experience are pushing back on these posts. Furthermore, the people...
I'm really glad that @375Fox posted that article. It was written by a very respected PH who has a LOT of real world DG experience. I remember when that article came out and called out some important research/experience. Bigger is not always better.
Like some of you, I talk to PHs on a...
Of course there are mental aspects to recoil management but make no mistake...there are physical consequences for having bad form or lack of recoil control experience. I despise the videos online of people handing a big gun to a novice (or worse, women or kids) and then laughing as it climbs...
Thanks for the reply and additional info. When we see areas with a lot of poaching, it really can affect the hunt mood. Of course, you have been wildly successful on the front end of your hunt. I remember a place in Zim where the poachers and dogs had caught multiple kudu at the water. It...
Of course the 270 will kill one but when you compare a good sized boar to the average deer, don't you think it warrants a bit more gun? The 270 is most well known as a deer class cartridge. A boar is built like a tank with heavy shielding for fighting and thick skin. A deer is built...like a...
Yea my man…I am the great enabler. Kudu are easy….watch me talk her into a sable! You can shoot it with my 416. We have much to talk about my young padawan.
Well said. Russells aren't for everyone but I hope everyone does the research and finds a boot that really works for them. I get compliments on my quiet walking and never get those dirty looks from being loud. I had one hilarious PH that would crack a stick or roll a stone and turn to me...
That's why I laughed...picturing SAPS looking at that and trying to figure out what it is. Then there are 5 of them looking at it and opening their 3 ring binders to find a photo of it.
You could hunt many more times in Africa and never need another rifle. Nice shooting and the perfect rifle for a one gun safari that includes eland, buffalo, etc. Is it scoped also?
As someone who needs some ankle support but also likes a quiet boot, I went with Russells 20 years ago. I still have the first set and now a 2nd set with a little softer sole. Not everyone likes Russells...but there isn't a boot that has universal appeal. The closest thing to that would be...
For as much as the .404 Jeffery comes up on this forum, I rarely see it in the field. I rarely see the ammo in stores in the US and not that much in Africa. A search on ammoseek shows only Hornady ammo up through $10 a round...and not any real options until you get to custom ammo like...
There you go with the logic again. Love it. To take it one step further...for those who don't like to carry a bit more weight in the rifle, how about taking a few pounds off your frame and adding one to the rifle? Win/win.
