My Kimber Super America is easily my favorite rimfire rifle of many. Unfortunately, the shipper snapped it in half and it's still being repaired. Talk about your heart skipping a beat!
I was just shooting my Nexus this morning. I have the 300 PRC and 6.5 PRC barrels. I plan on taking it to Africa this summer. I've removed the brake on mine to save the tracker's hearing and run it with a suppressor or no brake. The only thing I don't like about it is the notchy safety...
Very nice 7x57. That cartridge covers almost everything but DG. My examples have been very accurate and mild to shoot. That gun and a 9.3 or .375 would cover everything.
There are at least three .577 NE's for sale on GI that are under 12 lbs. One is by Holland, which surprises me as I think you would want 14 lbs for a practical .577 double that can be used without injury to yourself. These 11+ lb doubles weigh the same as my bolt action 416 Rigby but will have...
You don’t need one for hunting but if you use at the range, check the placement every so often or you can blow it off the end onto the range…causing some interesting looks…trust me.
I love my R8 in 300 win mag. It is fast and accurate and easy to handle. My 375 barrel is heavier profile and handles differently. I’m just not used to it yet. I have a second heavier R8 but I usually have a 416 barrel on it.
I’m a definite fan of the R8 platform and have a rimfire barrel...
I hope several crocs are taken during our hunt. Even the recoveries are exciting. I had to throw rocks at the crocs that were coming up to us while we waited for the tractor to show up. They are very aware of the blood in the water.
Second shot was same placement to make sure he couldn't move. Then we ran up and put one in lungs. He continued breathing and blinking his eyes for over 10 minutes. They can still react for a long time.
The 375 is a favorite for me as it's really the best answer for a one gun safari that includes DG and PG. Yes, the 416 can cover it but it's a bigger hammer, whereas the 375 is about perfect.
For the sake of this discussion, I will focus on a practical working African rifle in .375 caliber. I've got a great .300 win mag for PG that is my Blaser R8. It's killed a lot of stuff and I'm very comfortable with it. It needs no changes at all. I've got bigger calibers than .416 for DG...
The bottom line is you need paperwork/permits that show you brought something into Africa before trying to leave with that "ammo". It would be like trying to leave a country with a gun when you didn't enter the country with that gun. It's not logical but that's the reality. The OP gets it...
First of all, as someone who puts a lot of time into my own hunt reports, I appreciate you writing this report and really enjoyed reading it. Thanks for taking us through the highs and lows as that's real hunting. I love hearing how much you and your son hunt together. I'm a little jealous of...
In my experience, it would make no difference. They count loose bullets or bullet heads (components not ammunition) as ammo. Brass, bullets or loaded ammo is the same to them. It's not logical but they just see things a certain way. You will say it's not ammo and they will say but you put it...
I think you could easily have a problem if I understand what you are wanting to do. You want to exit South Africa without having a gun permit and wanting to have empty brass in your luggage. SAPS will consider brass to be the same as loaded ammo and you have no gun permit. You might get...
There might be someone who could run that rifle well but I don't know them. That's a shame too as Mr. Breeding's work is so nice. This is the first Breeding rifle I've seen that I don't like or wouldn't want to use. I would love to own one of his regular DG rifle builds.
This is key advice! Treat it like loaded ammo and it goes with the loaded ammo. Do not separate it, even in the same bag. I have been in a little locked room with no windows and seven (7!) SAPS officers in Joburg airport because I had loose brass. Some of you know the room!
We are already looking at next year and hope to continue it. If you are interested in next year, reach out and we can talk about it. We have gotten strong interest from multiple AH members on continuing it.
Spot and stalk for croc is exciting and for me, more interesting than baiting. That's exactly what I used on my croc; .375 and 300 gr Barnes X. At about 40 yards, the bullet did NOT exit the neck shot and actually rolled the croc up on his side. When he came back down, I hit him again. No...
That is correct. You can set it up as 1:1 or 2:1, depending on your desires. Some couples are hunting together of course. Friends could do that or parent/kid could do that. Or we could do two 1:1 slots. Either way, the next 2 hunters will fill our slots.
This is one of the little honey holes for red duiker in Limpopo. Most guys have to get their red duiker somewhere else but Dieter has this sorted out fantastically. Access is extremely limited! There are some ancient reds back there in the woods. There was a dead head pick up that I don't...
I well remember the first time I hunted in Africa...nice camp in Zim with CMS...thatched roof. At night when the generator shut off, it wouldn't take long and you would hear things moving around as they came out of the thatched roof over your bed. I made a promise to myself that I would under...
Did someone say croc?!? I will continue to say this is one of the best places to spot and stalk for crocs. There are over 1000 in the lake and there's nothing quite so exciting as stalking along the cut banks and having them launch out from underneath you!
As for night critters, there are...
This is really going to be the highlight of next season for me and Dieter. We are really looking forward to it. We are very close to having a full camp.
One big decision has been made to pickup everyone up in a comfortable professional courier service and drive us from Johannesburg to camp...
Great responses...I would have said quality glass...or lighted reticle...or quality boots...no one has said great socks yet, like Darn Tough or Smartwool.
I will say the one thing that has led me to the greatest success in my hunting hasn't been any single piece of gear, although getting gear...
Sounds like some great meals. I sadly took no photos but for our larger family meal of about 20, I marinated 2" pork chops...cut a pocket to fill them with stuffing and browned them on cast iron...then braised them slow in the oven in a beef broth base. Paired it with redskin mashed potatoes...
Your PH will likely have a shooting bag in his truck to throw over the hood for sighting in, etc. If they know long shots are likely, the tracker or appy will carry it.
I'm still waiting for more photos and have only received the one poor photo so far. It's the holidays so some patience is required. Depending on how the taxidermist made a big bear fit a smaller form, there might be some things we can do at another shop to fix it. How to get it picked up when...
Baboon hunting is very challenging and doesn’t get enough respect. Next time you hit your goals before running out of time, switch over to baboons and see how it goes. You might get one…maybe…but I bet you don’t get two from the same group!
I would be careful with the solids that are flat nosed as they convey a lot of shock and hydraulic displacement. I was in conversations yesterday with CEB bullets and they suggested a product I had not seen before. The 182 gr .308 MTAC is a match grade solid that is designed to print the same...
As mentioned it can be done with normal loads and not tearing them up. This was a few weeks ago, 300 WSM and fast 180 softs on Cape Grysbok at 60 yards. He was quartering to me but you can see the impact was well back from the shoulders. He dropped at the shot…well he dropped all of 6 inches...
Yea for sure. That's a good option. I have clients in Poland that I would like to visit sometime but I would love to see more of Europe. No shortage of options.
