The 22 Hornet: Uses: Your Choices in ammo, on animals, results.

I'm thinking of it for the claimed increased accuracy. I have to experiment with various loads but so far the grouping is not as tight as I would like for these small critters. What I understand is the K version spaces the cartridge in the chamber off the shoulder vs. the rim on the regular...

Gun choice for Tiny 10 and small night cats

I used factory Remington 45 grain softs. Really worked great on the small antelopes shot back a bit avoiding the shoulder. For the smaller critters even the 22 Hornet might be better to use a solid. I hit the white tailed mongoose in the right eye and about took off the ear. I plan to do some...

    AHG Trophy Shipping

To clarify, I got the sales pitch on Taxidermy in RSA (Every RSA resident I've discussed taxidermy with gives a sort of sales pitch on doing it in RSA), and on shipping and specifically on the package deal or "one stop shop". We also discussed various curios both African items made in various...

    AHG Trophy Shipping

Yes I noticed. You bring up a point us American clients have been wondering about.. I heard years ago, long before meeting Richard, that Outfitters routinely get a 15% kickback from taxidermists in RSA. And then the taxidermist gets a kickback from the shipping company. Is that anywhere near...

Gun choice for Tiny 10 and small night cats

I brought a Ruger 77/22 22Hornet with a Swarovski Z5i 3.5-18x44 with a Leica Calinex clip on thermal. And a little titanium suppressor. Used it on Red Duiker in the day, without the thermal of course. Sharpe’s Grysbok, genet, porcupines, side striped jackal, black backed jackal, civit, and...

    AHG Trophy Shipping

To clarify; Are you asking about shipping or taxidermy? Richard now brokers both. Are you saying your taxidermist quoted double the rate for mounting/taxidermy? Or did your taxidermist quote a shipping and clearing cost?? As I understand it, AHG is a shipping agent who will line up clearing...

    AHG Trophy Shipping

I used AHG Shipping for a large crate during covid. Sent ocean frieght. Not sure who's to blame it just the circumstances but it missed or was bumped from being loaded on the ship a coule times. The great thing was I did not get dinged with extra storage and the honored the quoted price. AND...

    Red Hartebeest help/advice

I agree they are too often overlooked for the quality of trophy they are. And great eating. I've taken two red Hartebeest and a couple real quality Lichtenstein's in Tanzania. The Tanzania taxidermy is tanned but not mounted yet and we have not decided what to do yet. Here are the Reds.

    Comparing costs

Lon I wonder if grocery prices have the same percentage spread? That happy meal includes a very labor cost in Comifornia. Our food prices are heavily effected by diesel fuel and labor costs. Although farm gate prices are generally up from where they were, I don't think they are currently up...

Traveling with scopes in carry on

I've had issues with pushing the weight limit on rifle cases when I take 3 in a case and have removed scopes for that reason. I think this is my third trip with 3 per case. First trip I even had binos in the rifle cases. 10 trips and no real issues with optics in carry on. It is a good feeling...

Traveling with scopes in carry on

I've had no issues other than on the scanner they tend to think it's a flashlight. Simple quick bag search and on the way. Just plan for some extra time. I have a scope and two sets of binos in a small carry-on plus two large flash lights in a larger one. Oh and two thermal sights.

    Starting from scratch

Great advice here! To add a little more details to @Edward Wright OP... Depending upon where you go, be prepared to add on other critters for the best overall value. If your budget allows. For example the "deal" we started with on our Tanzania hunt in 2021 was a 16 day leopard and Buffalo...

    Help me choose an airline

Of the choices presented under those scenarios, I'd go Delta through Atlanta. The big reason to go on Qatar is to fly First or Business Class. They can be a good deal on that... First Safari - I’ll hunt plains game - What caliber?

Hello and congratulations on booking that hunt! You may not agree or even like this advice. But not only should you go with a 30-06, you should get one that has a fine walnut stock and blued barrel. Something that says I'm hunting Africa with a bit of class and nostalgia. And even better if...

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

Yes fun thread :) I don't think anyone should be hunting leopard with a solid. They are very tough, resilient, and ferocious when wounded. You are on the right track with speed! But honestly a bullet that expands explosively and obliterates the whole chest cavity would best. Do that and no...

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

My leopard was 135 pounds and I'm hoping to hold out for bigger on the next one;) And from my experience, a smaller fast cartridge is more effective on cats in general but especially leopard. So I think in this scenario laid out by the OP, I'd prefer to use a fast light for caliber 416 or...

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

If I could have only one and it needed to be for the rest of my life.... It would be a bespoke bolt rifle such as a Rigby, probably in 416 Rigby as I may want less recoil as I get older, otherwise the 450 Rigby seems like an awesome cartridge. If it was a Jeffrey it would of course be in 404...

    Big 5 question

Leopard requires bait so it makes a lot of sense to hunt together with other things you want. And is dependent upon what is available for bait. Regarding elephant especially, check with your Outfitter because in some areas the Community may expect the meat from any elephant taken.

    Big 5 question

I'm quite sure that female leopard are off limits everywhere. Unless there are confinement bred ones I don't know about. I may or may not hunt a tuskless elephant some day... but I've got the Big 5, all good males, all kill hunts. Buffalo x3 and lion x2.... So far;) But I sure wouldn't...

    Big 5 question

One could do a Buffalo cull cow, female cull CBL lion, tuskless elephant, dart a rhino male or female and only really have to spend big money on a Leopard. You'd have the experience of a Big 5 hunt;)
  35. ActionBob

    Big 5 question

In my opinion, that is up to you. Officially I have no idea, I've never hunted for a record book so never bothered to check. Back before the ban on importing CBL lions, i.e. males were much more expensive... people were shooting cull females so they had a lion but at lower cost. I know some...

Truth! Very hard to do. What is really biting me now are the little critters and big beautiful ones. Gina wants a Tsessebe, do we do a shoulder or a full mount? If you really want to see the purple coloring, at least a half mount? But if paying for a half it is not that much more to do a...
