The 270 Win with 150g Partitions at 2900 fps or better was enough for two Montana grizzlies (back in the day when we could still hunt them ) :) They are smaller than their Alaskan cousins though.
I have loaded the Woodleigh 350g HD SPs in my 7 1/2 lb 375 Weatherby to 2550 fps. That would be my bullet of choice at 350 grains. I haven't killed anything with them yet, I used factory 375 H&H ammunition loaded with 300g A-Frames on my brown bear hunt.
I love my CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. I shot it quite a bit at first (400 full power rounds in the first two years). Now I shoot it maybe 5 rounds at the range every other month then take it hunting. So far only got a cow elk at 225 yards and a feral hot at 8 feet. Going to take it elk hunting...
I have a Mark V in 270 Weatherby I bought used for $800. It's very accurate, a bit heavy, factory ammo is still available. I've chrono'd the 150g Partitions factory ammo at 3150 fps. Respectable.
Yes the 300g A-Frames group fine in my 1 in 10" twist 375 Weatherby out of both 375 H&H ammo (2500 fps) and 375 Weatherby ammo (300g at 2800 fps). Also the Woodleigh 350g HD SP ammon at 2550 fps groups very well too.
I got mine from the Custom Shop a long time ago. Wayne at AHR did his CZ #1 upgrade. I recentely had Kevin Weaver add an ebony forend and grip cap. Beautiful work by both of them
I was lucky enought to buy a Springfield V16 in 45 Super when they first came out. Great gun! I shoot either bulk 45 ACP 230g hardball for practice or Buffalo Bore 45 Super 255g hardcast. They chrono at 1100 fps out of my gun. I had the Springfield Custom Shop adjust the trigger and put on...
I have shot cow elk running away from me in the black timber but i always go for a neck shot, if I miss oh well, if I hit the elk is down. Never wounded one that way.
If I had a once in a lifetime 200 yard shot at a 10 foot plus brown bear in a meadow and my PH said go for it I would. I'd rather shoot him at 10 feet :) Dangerous game hunting is about adrenaline.
Not been to Africa, it may or may not happen. Only things I've killed with my 500 Jeffery so far are a large feral hog at 10' coming towards me and a cow elk at 225 yards. Seeemed to work fine :)
Have it rechamberd to 375 Weatherby. Easy, cheap and worthwhile. You can still shoot 375 H&H ammunition through it. I have chrono'd 300g Partitions at 2800 fps through my 375 Weatherby (24" barrel). Should outperform a 338 Win Mag at any reasonable distance. I've also shot 350g Woodleigh...
I bought a used Mark V in 270 Weatherby as well about 5 years ago. Weatherby factory ammunition (150g Partitions) clocked in at 3150 fps on my Garmin. A lethal combination. It's very accurate too I had no issue hitting a scuba tank hanking from a chain 5 times in a row at 845 yards. Didn't...
My Remington XCR II (they don't make them anymore) has a very corrosion resistant TriNyte plating, the soft stock soaks up recoil and my 375 Weatherby (started out as a 375 H&H) only weights 7 1/2 lbs (weighed on a postal scale) with a 24" barrel, Talley steel QR rings, NECG steel open sights...
100% I've never felt that with my 12lb CZ550 in 500 Jeffery shooting 570g at 2300 fps. If I did I would've sold it immediately. I still only shoot a few rounds through it a month, all offhand.
Well Jaco and I discussed hunting buffalo at the SCI Reno about 10 years ago in Rambullions (we were at least half a dozen drinks in) and I suggested throwing rocks at the buffalo to get him to charge.
My two boxes of 7mm 175g A-Frames finally were in stock and they have been shipped. I also pre-ordered two boxes of .510 caliber 570g A-Frames, no word yet. Just wanted you folks to know if you've been waiting.
The 500 Jeffrey is great. I bought 200 Jamison cases awhile ago and the first hundred is on it's 4th reload. I also bought 100 Norma cases (as a backup) sold 50 at cost to another member because he had a brand new 500 Jeffery and couldn't find brass. My load is a little tamer 570g at 2300 fps :)
The CZ Custom shop put 2 12oz mercury recoil reducers in when they built my 500 Jeffery. The rifle balances perfectly and I'd hate to shoot it without them.
So my advice no matter which caliber you get is don't shoot too much from the bench. During load development I put a limbsaver slip on recoil pad over the regular one and I have aPast recoil pad sewn into my shooting vest. Once you're happy with your handload, and it's sighted in limit...
