    Argentina Dove Hunt Questions

I am leaving next Friday for a dove hunt near Cordoba. Have been wanting to do this trip for years and finally put a group together. My question is about tipping the staff, bird boys, etc. Do I need to get Argentine cash or will US dollars be ok? Any of you guys who have done this trip...

What was your first African Animal?

A gemsbok in Namibia in 1987--it was still SW Africa back then. Used my father's pre-64 Model 70 30.06 with a Leupold scope that dates to the 1950's. One shot at about 150 yards.

    Heym versus Rigby

Rigby guy here, especially regarding a DG bolt action rifle. {love my 416 Big Game} I've considered the Heym doubles as they are very well made and way, way less expensive than a Rigby double, but I haven't purchased one--yet. {Maybe the Shikari is priced competitively to a Heym, but the rising...

    4th of July Grilling

Baby back ribs on the Big Green Egg. Just used a healthy bit of Salt Lick garlic dry rub and put them in the rib rack and smoked them for two hours at 240 degrees, then wrapped them in foil and put them back in for two more hours, then put them in a soft sided ice chest for an hour before...

If money were no object, where would you hunt and why

I would buy a nice double in 470NE and go wherever the biggest elephants are. I would add a leopard to the trip as well.

    Cape buffalo vs the rest?

Hunting buffalo is a whole different experience. On my first buffalo hunt in SA, I also took several PG species. When hunting PG, it was me and the PH with the tracker usually staying in the vehicle to come pick us up. PH had a pistol holstered but no rifle. On the day we went out for buffalo...

Looking to book south African safari hunt, Suggestions for outfitters?

I highly recommend Quagga Safaries. Eric Visser runs a first class operation on the Manketti Reserve, 57,000 acres so plenty of room to roam. Great quality and quantity of game. The food is amazing and the accommodations are terrific. I've hunted with Quagga 4 times and all 4 safaris were...

First safari - Airline to fly and why?

I live in Dallas and have made the DFW to J'berg flight several times. Delta has an upgraded economy seating that is good service. I've also used the United flight and it was fine. Also bought their upgraded economy seating. It's a better seat for not a lot more money with upgraded...

Which firearm do you have to most fun shooting

In Africa, my Chapuis 375H&H double. With the RMR red dot, it's fun to shoot. For upland birds, my Beretta SL3 20g.

Help Me Learn About Water Buffalo

I hunted water buffalo in the Northern Territory, Australia in 2023. I used Australian Outback Safaris and had success. They use a tented camp, so we were "roughing it" compared to most outfitters in South Africa. Lots of big buffalo to choose from. They are not as aggressive as Cape Buffalo...

What are your 3 favorite hunts?

Here in Texas, my favorite hunt is doves in September each year. For big game: Cape Buffalo. I've hunted 3 of them and would do more if I can find the money. Third place: any upland bird hunting--quail, pheasant, etc.

    Beretta SO5 for sale

That is a beautiful SO5 and unusual with the case colored metal work. A new SO sells for $80,000 to $100,000+ depending on custom engraving, wood choice, etc. This SO5 is a bargain at $15k.

Anyone visited Enid and Champlin Arms?

Yes. Went up there from Dallas about 8 or 9 years ago to buy a Perazzi 20g George had in the vault. I traded an old Beretta 12g plus some cash. Enjoyed meeting George and seeing all the guns in the vault. So many it was hard to pick out one to examine. JJ was still in the same location at...

28 ga the most underrated and fun shotgun you will ever shoot

What rifle do you totally trust on dangerous game and what rifle do you mistrust on Dangerous game

This is really kind of a curious question. I completely trust my Chapuis 375 H&H double and my Rigby 416 Big Game. I would never go into the field with any rifle, any caliber that I did not completely trust. That's why you practice with them on the bench. If you aren't absolutely sure about...

RMR Base + Adapter for Chapuis Doubles

Great news Tom! When I bought my secondhand Chapuis 375 in 2017, I had a gunsmith in Dallas remove the block in the rib and make a base for the Trijicon RMR. It fits flush to the rib and works great.

Do you go afield with “hunting” or “nice” shotguns

I shoot a Beretta SL3 20g for doves and quail and a 687EELL Classic 12G for pheasant. No safe queens, but I do take care of my guns. If it's raining, I might switch to my A400 semi-auto with the composite stock. If I could afford a Purdey or Holland & Holland I would still take them into the...

    RMR/red dot sights Double Rifles

I tried shooting my double using the iron sights, but could barely hit the paper at 100 yards. The Trijicon RMR 3.25 MOA did the trick. My Chapuis 375H&H can drive tacks now. I've used in in Africa on 4 safaris and it works great. Rapid target acquisition, ease of use and accuracy.

    Heym versus Rigby

I have the Rigby Big Game in 416. Beautiful rifle, well balanced and I like the fact that it has a little extra heft. The weight is a big help in reducing felt recoil. You really can't go wrong with either choice, but if I had it to do over again, I would still buy the Rigby.

Anyone had a ph tell you to shoot the wrong animal or wrong shot?

Not in Africa, but on an elk hunt in New Mexico last year. The guide--I guess he is considered a professional--glassed a bull and told me to get ready. I handed him my range finder and told him to range the bull while I got set up. He says "300 yards" so I set up just at the top of the bull's...

    How much do you practice?

Currently just practicing at sporting clays with my 12 gauge. When I have an upcoming hunt, I go to the rifle range near me every week to shoot the rifles I plan to take on my safari. Last two African safaris I took 416 Rigby and 375 H&H double, so those were the practice rifles. I book my...

Rigby Big Game / Mauser M98 Magnum RMR mount

Not sure I agree with you. I took my 416 Rigby Big Game with the 1-6x24 Red Dot scope and my Chapuis 375 double with the Trijicon RMR on my last two African hunts. I don't see any significant difference between the scope at 1 power and the RMR on the double. Shot them both on those hunts and...

Rigby Big Game / Mauser M98 Magnum RMR mount

I have the Rigby Big Game, double square bridge, in 416 Rigby. I put a Leupold 1-6x24 firedot scope on it. When you crank it down to 1 it works just like a red dot RMR, and you have the ability to crank up the scope if you need to. More versatile than just a RMR (which I have on my double on...
