    Practicing long crossers

I have been to their school in Houston and I recommend it. Gil and his son Bryan are excellent coaches and their teaching method is great. They also have great videos on youtube that are good teaching tools. They use Shotkam videos to help a shooter understand shot picture and matching the...

1st Cape Buffalo Hunt South Africa recommendations

I recommend Quagga Safaris and Erik Visser. Erik runs a really great operation on the Manketti Reserve. 57,000 acres. Beautiful lodge and rooms, great food prepared by Lucky, the chef, and a great group of professional hunters. I've hunted with Eon and Quagga 4 times and took a huge buffalo...

    First Rigby Playdate

Congratulations and welcome to the Rigby club! I have the same rifle and have already taken two cape buffalo and some plains game with it in Limpopo. You will love shooting it on safari. The Federal ammo you used on the range is exactly what you want in Africa. I used the Bear Claws and Swift...

It’s disappointing the decision made in Australia

Don't get your hopes up. I hunted buffalo in the Northern Territory of Australia last year. The outfitter and the hunt were fine. Lots of good bulls. But the stupid paperwork for bringing my rifle with me and then getting it on the plane to return to the US was absurd--page after page of forms...

    *** Cowboy Boots ***

Been wearing cowboy boots since I was a child--pretty common in Texas. Not everyday, but most days. I have about 8 pair--plain calf skin most days and alligator or ostrich to dress up. I don't travel in boots because most airports don't have boot jacks at the security checkpoints, so taking...

Does the background affect you ?

Yes, the ShotKam at the end of my 32" Beretta DT11 adds noticeable weight. I usually shoot 50 to 60 rounds then take it off. You can definitely feel the extra weight on the barrel.

Does the background affect you ?

I guess I have the opposite problem. I struggle with targets in the trees, but do fine in open field. I use a ShotKam to help with correcting my sight picture. They are a very good tool and show you exactly what you are doing wrong.

Red Dot /RSM for Dangerous Game

I put a Trijicon RMR 3.5MOA on my double and a Leupold 1-6X24 Firedot on my Model 70 375H&H and my 416 Rigby. If you turn the scope down to 1X, it functions like a RMR red dot sight.

Current Production Winchester Mod 70 Safari Express

I own both a pre-64 and 3 modern Model 70's. Fit and finish on the new ones is superior to the pre-64 and all four function flawlessly. The pre-64 is a 30.06, the new ones: 270 Win, 300WinMag and 375H&H Safari Express. If you can find one, buy it.

Trijicon credo or Leupold vx6 lpvo?

for a DG scope, I prefer Leupold--I have a 1-6X24 firedot on my 416 Rigby. for a red dot sight, Trijicon RMR--I put one on my 375 H&H double and love it--it's so good I put one on my 9mm Beretta 92X.

    Any gin drinkers here?

Gin and tonic is my go-to cocktail. I did a tasting several years ago and found that The Botanist Gin makes the best GT, while Hendricks makes the best Martini. Hendricks has a little too much juniper for a good GT. Equally important, however, is the tonic. Q Tonic is by far the best tonic...

MIT Study Reveals Why Africa Is Still Poor

The question needs to be addressed country by country. "Africa" is dozens of countries with different histories and different indigenous peoples. The factors in one country that keep that economy in poverty won't be the same in another country hundreds or thousands of miles away on the other...

Sporting Clays - Caesar Guerini Summit Sporting

I came close to getting a Caesar Guerini, but ended up staying with Beretta. In the price range you are looking at, you should consider the Beretta 694. They offer it in several clay gun options and barrel lengths and it has been very well reviewed by lots of folks on youtube. I will admit...

    Model 70 Range Day

Congratulations on a great set of Model 70's. I'm a big fan of the rifle and have the Safari Express 375H&H, 300 winmag Super Grade Maple, and 270Win Super Grade. I also use Leupold firedot scopes on all of them.

New and pristine or used with patina?

Patina is cool, especially if you are the one who hunted with the rifle/shotgun and put the patina on it.

    Favorite animal hunt

In Africa, Cape Buffalo. There's something more intense about hunting an animal in its own territory that no only can kill you, but will if it gets a chance. However, I have to say that I look forward to opening day of dove season in Texas probably more than anything else. It's usually a...

    Rifle Actions (Ranked)

The question almost requires a mixture of apples and oranges. Doubles are designed for a specific purpose. Bolt actions are more versatile. But here are my humble opinions: Bolt Actions: Damn near any rifle with a Mauser 98, then the more affordable American copy, i.e. the Model 70--and I don't...

    Preparing for 1st Safari

Welcome and best of luck on your upcoming trip. Unless you are grossly overweight or out of shape, you will be fine if you just do some walking--at least a few miles a couple of times a week before you leave. I've hunted Limpopo 4 times and you will be doing a lot of walking and carrying your...

    .416 for plains game?

Like some of the other posters above, I used my 416 Rigby Big Game on zebra, roan, buffalo, and even an impala ram that wandered close to a bush blind when we were looking for kudu. It works just fine if you don't have to shoot very far.

AUSTRALIA: Just Returned From Aussie Buffalo Hunt

I recommend Aaron Corbett at Australian Outback Buffalo Safaris. He was supposed to be at DSC in Dallas last week, but was in a wreck near Texarkana and ended up in hospital--but he's recovering and should be at Nashville for SCI. He will put you on a great bull. As I said in my report above...

    Wanted 470 NE Factory Ammo

If you want Federal, you will have to order from their website in the custom shop section. Last time I looked most, if not all, of the usual stuff shows as unavailable. Custom shop will make up what you want, but it's a bit pricy.

What do you think of the new Rigby Shikari?

The Shikari is a smart move by Rigby. Priced at the market above a nice Heym or Chapuis double ($15,000 to $25,000) but below the $125,000+ for a Rigby rising bite or a Holland & Holland, or Westley Richards, etc.

Any Caeser Guerini guys out there?

I have looked at the Guerinis and they are really beautiful shotguns. I don't own one, but I've seen shooters with them at the sporting clays range at Elm Fork range in Dallas. Haven't heard anything negative about them. FWIW, my sporting clay shotgun and my field/game gun are both Berettas...

    Mid life crisis?

I agree with the posts above about checking out the inventory on the champlinarms.com website. You should also check out William Larkin Moore in Phoenix. I purchased a second-hand Chapuis double in 375H&H from them five years ago and paid under $9000. I put a Trijicon RMR red dot sight on it...

3.5 12ga vs big bore rifle

You will notice felt recoil on the practice range. When you are in the bush in Africa and shooting at a buffalo you won't feel a thing. Having said that, I agree with the other posters here. Felt recoil is a function of rifle design and weight and fit. An ill-fitting 12 gauge shotgun will...

    Scopes & Ammunition for a .375H&H

I put a Leupold 1-6X24 Firedot scope on my Model 70 375H&H and another of the same scope on my 416 Rigby Big Game. I agree with the other posters about 300 gr. Federal Swift A-Frame--or Trophy Bonded Bear Claw--if you can get it. It's showing "unavailable" on the Federal website, but you can...

Anyone else like red dots on long guns..?

Big fan of red dot sights. I put one on my 375 H&H double and it can drive tacks. I've used in in Africa on 4 safaris on everything from buffalo to wart hog. I liked it so much I put one on my Beretta 9mm pistol. I'm sold on them. Makes shooting so much faster and instinctive. I also have...

My Take on Dangerous Game Scopes

Phillip, Great video! Thanks for your insight. Interestingly, I have the Leupold 1-6X24 on my 416 Rigby and the VX6 2-12X42 on my 300 winmag. Both great scopes. I also am a big fan of the red dot scopes and RMR sights. All of my rifles have red dot scopes/sights.

Best source for a used double rifle?

I should have added stevebarnettfineguns.com to the list above. Also a great selection of pre-owned doubles. You should also consider coming to the Dallas Safari Club Convention in January 11-14, 2024. Always dozens of beautiful doubles to look at and buy.
  42. C

Best source for a used double rifle?

champlinarms.com in Oklahoma. George always has a nice selection of second hand doubles. JJ Perodeaux is the gunsmith in the same location and can work on getting it fitted perfectly for you. William Larkin Moore in Phoenix also has a few.

Winchester Model 70... new or pre-64?

I have three new Model 70's and a pre-1964 Model 70 in 30.06. All four are great rifles. No noticeable difference in how the action operates--silky smooth in all of them. The new rifles have better wood and the finish on them is actually better than the pre-'64. Buy either with confidence.

What is the future of the fine firearms market

When I bought my fine shotguns or double rifle or 416 Rigby, I didn't give secondary market much thought--same way I look at art, as I collect contemporary painting and sculpture. I buy to enjoy it myself, not as an investment. If something in my collection happens to appreciate in value over...

First Hunt, Buffalo and Plains game

If you can be in Dallas in January for the Dallas Safari Club Convention, you will be able to interview many African outfitters in person. In most cases you will be speaking with the PH you will hunt with. I recommend you do this to get comfortable with the folks who will manage your hunt. When...
