I just received 500 180 gr Nosler 10mm and 100 Norma .284 160 gr bullets 2 days ago. Both nicely packaged and shipped promptly, very happy and will definitely use Raven Rocks Precision again.
Has anyone killed anything with the 180 gr Nosler? I just received 500 of them from Raven Rocks Precision yesterday but was only planning on using them for pests and plinking after finding a load that replicates the poi of my 180 gr XTPs.
I am so sick and tired of seeing idiots on their phones doing stupid things. Selfies with buffalo, bears and other animals that can kill them, I'm going with the Darwin theory as well !!
The 145 LRX in my opinion would be ideal. Plus in my experience, quite easy to make shoot well. The benefit will be Barnes legendary retained weight, deep penetration, less recoil and the LRX's ability to expand at lower velocities.
Thanks for sharing, you made my mind up for powder choice between AA#9 and Longshot.
What barrel length and firearm was this data from? I have a Springfield Ronin that has some upgrades and hoping for your velocity using the same components. We have an early doe season in September and my goal...
The cream of wheat method works great; I have used it quite a few times forming .375 H&H to 8mm Rem Mag. The only thing I can add from my experience is check your chamber area often for little cream of wheat "donuts" left behind from combustion, canned air would take care of any debris that you...
I purchased the Spatan Quad Sticks a few months ago and so far, like them. I have been using the Spatan bipod because I didn't want a bipod permanently attached to my rifles while hunting, so the quad sticks seemed like the logical choice since I have several adapters on different rifles. I like...
Great story and congratulations! It's remarkable that at your age you are willing to sacrifice material items to experience a hunt like this with your family, you will see even more later on in life how special this trip was.
It seems you are doing the best you can with the hand you were given. Your report brings back memories of my first "away" big game hunt in 1986. I chose an outfitter in West Texas that hunted trophy antelope near Cornudas outside of El Paso. I was in my mid 20s and money was tight but managed to...
My vote would go for a Browning B S/S Sporter 20ga. They can be had in the price range you're looking for. These are very nice, durable shotguns, straight grip with the barrel selector behind the trigger guard. They were manufactured up until 1986 but still available (used but sometimes as new)...
It would be a good idea to ask your outfitter what the expected shot distances would be. Wind drift with big low bc bullets might be a bigger concern. You can compensate for drop but drift can be fickle. I have been hunting Newfoundland most every year since 2010, most all the moose I have taken...
You have amazing writing skills! Your whole journey was well described; I found myself purposely looking for and following your posts. I am really excited to hunt with Lloyd and Sive next June.
Great Deal!!
I have six pre'64 70s in my collection, I grew up reading the writings of Jack O'Connor and enjoy the nostalgia of hunting with them. They are, in my opinion one of the best rifles ever produced. If you would like some informative reading, the book "The Rifleman's Rifle" is...
I can't wait to read more of your experience; my Wife and I hunted with Marius in 2019 and had an amazing trip. Since then, there has been a couple of failed attempts on my part to get back with KMG. We were supposed to be there around now, but I was hurt last fall when moose hunting and still...
If you find one, be sure to check firearm parts import regulations into South Africa before you purchase it. I recall a member of AH was attempting to do something similar and it wasn't working out due to the regulations of firearm parts.
As Rare Breed said go to Mckenzie and check out the Peace Of Mind hanger. I have a large moose with one of these and it works great, it's also easy to hang knowing you're bottomed out in the hanger with your lag bolt.
Meopta 8x32, we have 3 pairs that were made for Cabela's Instinct Euro line. I compared them to Zeiss and Swarovski and felt they were sharper and brighter that the Zeiss and as good as the Swarovski (at that price point) I don't think they are available from Cabela's now, but Euro optics might...
I regularly shoot a pre '64 69A Winchester, they came with grooved and non-grooved receivers, mine is grooved to allow the use of rimfire rings. I also shoot a Winchester 52B Sporter that was made in Japan by Miroku in the early 90's. They are both very accurate after finding what ammo they like.
CCI or Federal for me! Winchester had an issue years ago with large rifle and large rifle magnum cups splitting which caused gasses to burn between the cup and primer pocket causing bolt burn & erosion. My new (at the time) Cooper 300 WM suffered some burns with pitting. Winchester examined my...
Warne for sure, I have installed many on both customer rifles and my own, never had a problem.
The weight difference is not even a consideration. Another benefit of Warne rings is that they don't tend to cause ring marks on scopes just so they are over tightened.

Not surprised!!
We have lengthy background checks on ammunition, "permit" required to purchase ANY semi auto rifle (including rimfires), magazine restrictions and too many concealed carry restrictions to list along with insanely high taxes. Big government at its best.
I shot a moose 10 yrs ago uphill and to my right while I was sitting off balance on sticks shooting my 300 Wby, same outcome as yours except for the super glue, amazing how much it bleeds. I still have my scar.
It was the Argo ride through hell! My foot was wrapped and my boot laced up tight, but I still got to "enjoy" every rock, dip or bump. Luckily my spirits were good and continued to joke around with my partners.
Actually, I was not in any pain to speak of unless I tried to walk on it. We had a paramedic in camp hunting, and he didn't think anything was broken, just a severe sprain with bruising and some swelling. There was also another person who was retired Canadian military with lots of first aid and...
I have been thinking about this thread for the last few months, I thought it might be an interesting topic. The only reason I didn't start it sooner was because I was not looking for sympathy. I feel that my injury has made me appreciate things I took for granted.
It's easy for somebody to tell you afterwards what you should have done but when you've prepared and planned for something we all live for, it's hard to let go. Glad you're ok, wear your cool scar with pride,
I sure do! I'm glad I was hurt doing something I love and not walking into the grocery...
I get my exercises online also and have been doing the one you described; it does work great for learning to properly use your toes during the stepping cycle.
Seems like it could have been life changing if you caught the birdshot in your face. Hunting accidents caused by negligence are hard to justify. I know people get excited and have a hard time controlling these emotions. I lost a friend opening day of our deer season 1987. He was the proud new...
The last six months have been a challenge. My son and I were on our annual moose hunt in Newfoundland late September 2024. The first day (Monday 9/23) we hunted our way back to the spike camp we would be using for a night or two. We opened the camp, cut some wood and went off on foot for the...
