Another new member from the Lone Star State

Welcome to AH! I'm down by Boerne, Tx. My wife and I did a safari with Numzaan Safaris a few years ago and it was an incredible trip. If you would like to discuss, let me know. By the way, my wife's rifle was a Ruger No. 1 in 7x57 Mauser. I bought it originally but she has claimed it as her own...

Do you or have you participated in Competitive Shooting?

I shot 3 position in college, then shot rifle silhouette seriously for 25 years. Shooting offhand high power silhouette at 200, 300, 385, and 500 meters is extremely challenging both for yourself and your equipment. You learn so much it’s difficult to try to tell it all. I believe it’s fantastic...

    Courtney Safari Boots

I have flat feet and own several pairs of Russells shoes and boots. Since Russells are custom made you can specify the construction and design. For flat feet they have a "wedge heel" that makes the most comfortable footwear available.

    Barrel Life

All of you guys are right. Huge cartridges with small diameter bullets have high flame temperatures which burn up chambers. If you want high accuracy life, which in my case as a Silhouette Shooter, is defined as 1" groups on demand at 200 meters, than when a barrel is shot out it goes to 4" the...

    Barrel Life

No I haven't. I use Shilen stainless steel barrels and match bullets. The accuracy holds but when they go downhill they go fast.

    Barrel Life

I have shot Rifle Silhouette going on 35 years now. I have shot out 2 barrels, a 7-08 at 6600 rounds and a 6.5-08 (260 Rem) at 7300 rounds. I clean using JB Bore paste and Kroil using patches on a jag and no brushes. I believe a lot of wear comes from brushes banging on the chamber. I learned...

    X Bolt in Magnum Calibers?

I won a Browning X-Bolt in 30-06 in a sporting clays tournament. I had not paid attention to the X-Bolt previously. It's a great rifle. First, to speak to the controlled round feed comparison, the X-Bolt magazine design feeds the rounds straight up, not side to side. The polymer magazine is...

    Lack of American made optics

Awhile back, I talked with the Leupold sales rep at the Houston Safari Club show. He was telling me that when he did training for the dealers, he liked to ask what scope did they think was the brightest. Everyone would say a 50mm objective with a 30mm tube. the answer was the 2.5x8 VXIII. It...

    Scopes for safari rifles

Not true. Go to a rimfire Silhouette match where they shoot out to 100 meters and see how you do with iron sights. I have two rifles for this, one has a 36x and the other has a 40x scope. I see you belong to Gray's Harbor gun club in Washington state. Washington state is very strong in...

    Practicing on shooting sticks

One tip on practicing is the value of dry firing. When you dry fire, you see if you are making an error like pulling the shot. In the year before our safari, my wife and I had shooting sticks and a rifle in the corner of our family room and pulled them out during commercials and dry fired at...

    Hello from Life-Form Taxidermy

    Best Powder measure

Harrell’s are fantastic. I have 3, one for pistol, one for medium rifle, one for large rifle. You can do fine with the one large one. Sinclair sells a stand for it that is sweet. Buy a Harrell’s once and don’t look back.

    Hand Priming Tools

I have a collection (accumulation?) of priming tools. Lee, RCBS, Forster, Lachmiller, Raiha are there. I have a Sinclair which is excellent but slow. The best of all is the 21stcentury, www.xxicsi.com. It is a pleasure to use and you can dial in your seating depth, which is important to...

Look what arrived in the mail

A personal note to Seth - I was a freshman at University of Texas and there was a guy I went to High School with whose Dad was a professor at UT. His Dad had a formula to make the Dean's list. The formula was never miss class for any reason, sickness whatever. The other part was study three...

Look what arrived in the mail

Here is a Dad story about Texas Tech. So my son is graduating with a degree from Texas Tech. So I am thinking what is a good graduation gift? Texas Tech's motto is "guns up" so a .45 Colt single action would be appropriate. My Cowboy Action friends say buy a Ruger. A Ruger Vaquero at the local...

Has anyone used a McMillan CZ Express stock

I replaced my CZ hog back stock in 416 Rigby with the McMillan. You have to be sure you get the 550 Magnum stock and not the standard 550 stock model. I have 3 silhouette/hunting rifles that have McMillan stocks either glass or pillar bedded. These stocks were so good and tough I decided that...

    Mad Minute

When I lived in Houston we shot Across the Course Highpower which included Rapid Fire sitting and prone, 10 shots in 60 seconds. Then BP and Shell moved in major operations in west Houston and we got guys coming in from the UK. These guys used SMLE rifles. The SMLE is a cock on opening action as...

What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

I love mechanical watches. Bought a Rolex Datejust in 1983 and was my main watch for 30+ years. Along the way accumulated pre-Tag Heuer 2 dial chronograph, Fortis, Omega, Longines, Ocean7, Boschett just because I like them. When hunting and traveling form follows function. My Casio G-Shock...

    Advice Needed

I hunted in South Africa with Numzaan Safaris. For a few days we had an apprentice tag along. He was going to college at Baylor and was spending his summers apprenticing to be a PH. His mother worked for Delta so he skated on airfare. Great kid. You may want to contact Numzaan and inquire. They...

What cartridge have you thought about the most, but never owned a rifle in it?

I would like to have a Zoli over under double rifle in 450/400 and a controlled feed bolt action in 9.3x62. What is hard is I have guns now that I like that overlaps these cartridges now. Since I handload these cartridges are quite versitile. The 260 can go from 85 to 100 gr bullets like a 243...

    Any Snow Geese Hunters?

There is an easy way to make geese delicious. Take the goose, skin it and boil it with Louisiana crab boil. When the meat is falling off the bone pull off all the meat and make jambalaya out of it. The crab boil takes the gamey taste out and the meat tastes like roast beef. Makes a great jambalaya!

    What is your preferred 6.5/.264?

Excellent thread, good stuff. So, I've been a silhouette shooter for some 30 years now. We first shot 308s and got beat up. Then the 7mm 308 wildcat was the rage and Remington introduced it. I burned up barrel of 7mmx308 on silhouette and game at 7500 rounds. Then the attention was directed...

Nosler ballistic tip for Gemsbok ?? Yes or no?

Yes, it makes perfect sense once you understand what is the driver of their market. Also, it makes perfect sense that those bullets do so well on impala, bushbuck, and springbok. The American bullets are great for those applications!

Nosler ballistic tip for Gemsbok ?? Yes or no?

I had the rare opportunity, due to the fact that I was a vendor to the Remington Arms Plant in Arkansas, to have a conversation with a product manager of Remington bullets. If you are a bullet manufacturer in America, your market is deer hunters. You need to make bullets that perform well on...

Tips for Kudu hunting by stalking

I got a fine kudu plus 8 other animals. My suggestion would be to wear shoes that are good for stalking and not have heavy lugs. I wore Russell Moccasin Joe's PH with the general purpose soles. My PH commented several times over a two week hunt how he was impressed with how quiet these were.

    Top three African calibers

7x57 or 30-06 338 Win mag 416 Rigby I like shooting different calibers but I could live with these. I would need a .22 and a 12 gauge also to be happy.

Taking your own rifle: Is it worth the hassle?

There is a saying, not all shooters are hunters and not all hunters are shooters. If you are a shooter then there is no reason to ask the question. 6.5 Creedmoor

Thank you for the welcome! You have been to Boerne several times, you are well traveled! My confession is that on my safari to Africa, I used the .338 Win mag and my wife used a 7x57. She just liked our Ruger No. 1A in 7x57 because it is short and balances well for her. We shot 9 animals and...

    6.5 Creedmoor

The 6.5 mm bullets are a happy mathematical combination of high sectional density and ballistic coefficient. They buck the wind, hold velocity longer, and penetrate well. As a silhoutte shooter way back we wildcatted the 7-08 as an alternative to the 308. I burned up a barrel of a 7-08...
