Typically we cut the throat of the animal so it can bleed out. You don’t want all that blood retained in the meat. But I agree, there is no reason to carry a “safari knife” when you hunt for a trophy. Makes a great gift for the trackers and skinners tho.
I agree with you. I hunted a couple hundred animals in Africa with a 7x57 & 308 when I was young. Although they got the job done I always felt like I needed more punching power on distance shots. Now I own a 300WM and it’s just so much more superior/versatile than my other calibers for PG.
My...
I have a 8400 in 300win, 25-06 and a 84L in 270. All three shoot very good groups and their wood stocks are VERY nice. You’ll be very happy with your purchase. I see some really nice 84M’s in 308 on GBroker so good luck on your search.
Welcome. Go to the Dallas Safari Club that is in Atlanta. Great atmosphere and a lot of people that can help you plan your next trip and answer questions.

Outfitters really stick out their necks with these donations so save up some money to spend. Most people only get the opportunity to go on safari once so make it count.
I would add a gemsbuck, warthog, kudu, zebra, and maybe a nyala/waterbuck. That would be a great safari that you will never...
99.9% of the pickups in South Africa with cattle rails have never been used for hunting. It’s mainly for transporting and theft. I use mine for both since I own a farm there. Just wanted to hear if anyone has ever built some for the trucks here. If it’s even legal to have it on your truck.
Has anyone made or fitted their American trucks with the bed cages they have on Safaris? I’ve been living in the US for about twenty years now and all my trucks have them in SA. Thought about either building some or finding someone who has done it here. Wonder if there would be a market for it.
Ballistically it is superior to its Mauser competitor that is arguably the most deadly caliber in Southern Africa. I’ve used the Mauser and have hunted hundreds of animals in SA without feeling under gunned. After reading more into the caliber I would absolutely take the rifle.
Should work great on all those animals. We have had hunters use the caliber and killed everything up to Eland. I’d personally use the heavier bullets. Shot placement is very important on Zebra and Wildebeest so be comfortable with taking the shot.
Good luck!
Good question.
I would go with the 30-06 or 300WM. Provide lots of different bullets and can handle business in the bush or Rockies. Ammo is available in every store and in most farmers houses.
DG included I would do the 9.3x62. The meat damage gets out of hand when you start shooting PG with...
I did something similar with my CZ 550 in 416 Rigby.
Treaded barrel length with cap is 21 3/4.
Also put a recoil rod in the stock. Love shooting the rifle.
I’m currently building cattle rails for my Tundra bed or as we call them “tralies” in South Africa. We have some on our Hilux and I love the look especially on a LC as the photo below shows.
I speak Afrikaans and can tell you that the outfitters were not happy. Mainly blame management. DSC might have to throw them a bone next year.
I just don’t think a lot of people fancy going to Atlanta and the African hunting market is not that large in the SE from my experience.
I had a great...
Be precise with what is for sale and the condition/price of the rifle/scope/ammo. Most people on here are pretty well versed in what they want to buy so quality photos with good lighting goes a long way in eliminating back and forth follow-up questions or concerns.
I’ve got a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby I might let go. Has the barrel band on it, mercury recoil rod in stock, and a muzzle break on it. Had the bolt smoothed out along with some other gunsmithing details. PM me for details if you are interested.
I have a new 9.3x62 barrel for a large ring mauser 98 and a new 7x57 barrel for a small ring mauser. If you decide to build your own and want barrels pm me.
I have a few in DG calibers. My 416 Rigby has served me very well over the years in Africa. The previous owner had a lot of modifications done to it like recoil rod in the stock and a muzzle break. Kicks like a 300 WM now. If you can find one with a nice stock and a barrel band, jump on it.
Do you mind posting some photos of yours?
I’ll go ahead and take it then since you speak so highly of it. Just need to get rid of a rifle to make room for it in the safe.
I’ve had one of these in 9.3x62 in my cart at Euro Optic for a while now. Just can’t find much info/reviews about the rifle. Hoping I can put my hands on one at either DSC or SCI.
I’m there with you. Not sure I need anything else but for some reason I look through GB every week.

Itching for a 6.5x55 since everyone speaks so highly of it.
There was a custom Ruger No. 1 in 404 Jeff for sale on LongRangeHunting.com two weeks ago. Not a bolt action but a good one to get if you need one quickly.
Beautiful rifle Krish.
You can buy two Dakota 76’s and still be within budget. Think their craftsmanship is world class and is always a neck turner in hunting camp. Good luck on your search. All the rifles that have been mentioned are great options.
Since you have the big and medium calibers covered. I’d get something that’s easy on the shoulder and maybe your wife and kids can enjoy also. Something that can reach out to 500yrds.
25-06, 270, 7x57, 280AI.
True. I’ve gotten 2800fps from my Whelen with 250g bullets but neither my Hornady, Nosler, or Barnes reloading manuals come close to any of those numbers. Remington ammo I have off the shelf puts a 250g bullet at 2400fps which is equivalent to the 338-06. Both calibers will kill plains game the...
The rifle on the far left is my 375 Dakota. Has been a pleasure shooting it. Changed the glass on it.
Krish picked up a very nice traveler on here a few months ago. He might have some good information.
