Is there an African animal you wouldn't shoot?

I killed an anteater of some kind many years ago and immediately regretted it, so no more of those or anything similar like an aardvark. As far as the "normal" game animals, I'd be least interested in the black wildebeest. Not that I have any moral objections, they just look icky and I wouldn't...

    Fishing Addiction Group

Ha thanks yeah I'm pretty well-done right now. It was a great time, lots of friends and family joined us on the boat. Always great to introduce people to the wonders of the sea.

    Fishing Addiction Group

Got back yesterday from our annual summer vacation, 4 weeks in Prince Rupert, British Columbia (20 days on the water). Plenty of nice little halibut, but the salmon were slow up until the last few days we were there.

My daughter's "going to Africa" video blog

At first I thought she was just getting to know that .22 but then she closed the bolt on an empty chamber and could hear that there was no shell, so she must have shot it quite a bit. Sounds like it will be a great experience. Her English is coming right along.

    Warthog Jumps String

Wow, I've had deer that ducked under the arrow's path as they gathered themselves to take their first jump but I've never seen anything jump FORWARD out of the way. That's unreal.

3D archery shoot prep for upcoming Safari

3D is phenomenal practice... I'm lucky enough to have an 18 target course about 2 miles from home. Definitely better practice than shooting groups on a block, although I do my share of that too.

Will my Professional Hunter want me to bring more than a .270

I guess I'm back on the .270 train for now. Sold the .300 RUM and bought the lady a PSE Stinger bow complete with some pink arrows... and her groups are tightening up quickly.

Will my Professional Hunter want me to bring more than a .270

Well, the rifle isn't here yet. Still waiting for it to be shipped. But that's ok, because I'm starting to consider changing my plan a little... I'm trying to determine if my girlfriend enjoys shooting, in particular, shooting clay pigeons. She isn't a fan of recoil, but she says it looks like...

Will my Professional Hunter want me to bring more than a .270

Got myself some Trail Boss powder for developing a reduced practice load for the yet-to-arrive .300 RUM. Couldn't resist trying it in my .30-06. Normally this rifle is uncomfortable for me to shoot much at the range, as it is quite light and has a hard plastic buttplate. With 17 gr of Trail Boss...

Will my Professional Hunter want me to bring more than a .270

North Fork bullets seem to get a lot of attention so I looked them up... BWAHAHA for over $2 a piece I think I'll keep looking.

Will my Professional Hunter want me to bring more than a .270

I've got an H&R Buffalo Classic in .45-70. Loaded with 325 gr FTXs at full power and with a metal butt that rifle lets me know what's going on. Hopefully this rig won't be quite as uncomfortable. I'll definitely be working on a reduced load for plinking and getting comfortable with the gun, not...

Will my Professional Hunter want me to bring more than a .270

I do reload, and if I didn't I'd start, at $3 a pop I couldn't shoot that round enough to justify keeping the rifle. The first thing I'd like to figure out is a reduced load with which to practice. Recoil chases me from the firing line sooner rather than later. For hunting I think I'll try...

Will my Professional Hunter want me to bring more than a .270

UPDATE Some of you may remember that at one point in this thread I stated that I wouldn't have asked the original question if I had a .300 Mag. Well, guess what... Last night I received a phone call - apparently the Calgary Fish and Game Association was having their annual banquet, and one of...

When have you ever been let down by the performance of your rifle on game?

My father had a Mossberg 12G fail to feed and eject on him big time during a goose hunt. As for myself, I've had more than my share of problems while killing animals and I can't think of a single one that I can blame on the gun, the load or the optic. It's always been the nut behind the bolt.

    The Collector

Keep your shotguns and your Glocks. I'd turn it into the definitive hunting rifle showdown by taking a .375 H&H, .30-06, and a .338 Lapua. After 3 years I'd submit my report on which is truly the most versatile cartridge.

Will my Professional Hunter want me to bring more than a .270

Thanks for all the replies. If I were choosing a rifle specifically for Africa it would not be a .270, and who knows, by the time I get there things may have changed and I might be able to get something heavier. Again, I appreciate you guys letting me pick your brains. Jim

Will my Professional Hunter want me to bring more than a .270

Thanks to those who answered my question. I am still in the very early stages of planning, but as far as I can see I will be hunting in South Africa. I am not planning to pursue eland at this point but I have a feeling my species list will go out the window once I have boots on the ground. For...

Will my Professional Hunter want me to bring more than a .270

Hello all, I do not wish to start yet another debate on whether or not cartridge A is capable of taking species B. My question is whether or not a client who is armed slightly on the light side will make a PH uneasy. I understand that it is my decision to make and that it is up to the PH to...

    HUNTING Warthog

From the videos I've seen there is almost never a follow-up shot on a warthog. They always seem to run a short distance and pile up or drop on the spot. Anyone ever have to pop pumbaa twice?

Who booked at a show this year

Unfortunately I was next to broke when I visited the Calgary show this past January so I could not take advantage of some of the excellent deals there. Many were offering their regular price list in Canadian currency due to the sudden drop of our dollar, so that was about a 30% discount. I very...

Namibia: First safari booked with Jan Oelofse Safaris!

Hey fellow Albertan, your description of how you decided to actually go sounds almost exactly like my own story! I'm just a year or so behind you in the process. I was at the Calgary show on Jan 30 this year, it was fantastic!

    New Guy From Up North

Hello all, great to be here, looks like a very informative site. I'm from northern Alberta, Canada. We have lots of amazing hunting opportunities here, but I've always dreamt of an African Safari. Recently I decided to actually start the planning (and $aving) phase of my first trip, which I...
