If you’re been to Denver you might understand why there are two stores. Traffic is horrific on I-25 through Denver. Going around Denver on the east side is a toll road and is a long slog going around the west side. Also the north store serves metro areas from the north, ie. Fort Collins and...
@JG416. I researched Reiser b4 my Namibia hunt in the Kalahari last June. Initially good response with pricing lists but no follow up after that to my detailed questions. They were recommended by my outfitter. After the hunt and after finding a taxidermist recommended by Peter at Pronto Global...
I do see the anomaly both in form and color waaaay up in that tree. Not much detail though.
Enjoying the story however. Legend or fact I wouldn't know!!
I am working with a freight company in Windhoek to forward my trophies and he confirms what the OP says.
They have a "possible solution" and hope to know more later this week.
I received an estimate from Namibia Safari Services in Windhoek for the 11 plains game I hope to kill and transport hides and horns to RSA for taxidermy. Please note additional charges for permits and taxes within RSA, if any, plus additional transport to final destination are not included...
Am I to assume the permit application is completed and submitted by the PH or outfitter with a copy of the passport emailed to said PH or outfitter prior to the hunt.
Also enlighten me on what permits are required for a plains game hunt with Cities Hartmann's zebra.
Don't know about Isle Royal situation but know sheep and cattle ranchers in north eastern WA and south western MT that would disagree with the wonton killer comment.
Like Shootist43 says. I made a set of these, http://www.ropeworks.biz/reader/tripod.pdf, from bamboo poles found at the local garden center and some thin #18 three strand nylon cord. Wrapped a thin piece of inner tube in and around the "v" notch to cushion the rifle forend. Works as intended.
I'd like to check out Nyati Wildlife Art and Reiser near Windhoek. Nyati has a webpage but haven't responded to my inquiries and Reiser is just the opposite. Not sure who my PH is recommending, but it's early. Time to sort it out.
Bill, I'm on the same wave length. Taxidermist in SA I know and like his work, nothing fancy but quality at a good price. The local guy that did my caribou and moose from BC, does fine work. His prices are almost double what I pay in SA.
I plan on visiting a couple taxidermists upon arrival...
Bill, Keep us posted when you hear more. My load will be 8-9 animals, but about half will be small, steenbok, duiker, klipspringer and like that. I'm a bit more optimistic now.
Your plan is shipping from Namibia? July is my timeframe. Preliminary cost savings for taxidermy in SA is...
BRICKBURN, I'm waiting on his reply. I kinda doubt it. He's checking with his transporter. He is getting me some costs but commented same as you that dip and pack and other costs might be a deal breaker.
After my upcoming Namibian, Kalahari area, hunt I'm considering having my trophies shipped to or picked up by my taxidermist in South Africa.
What are the issues I need to know about to get it done. Permits. Dip and Pack. Timeline. SA taxidermist pick up? Shipping companies. Costs.
I...
Thanks to all for the kind words. Also to those who PM'd me and wrote informative posts while I was searching for a safari operation, your experiences and opinions were most helpful.
What lcq said. Howa makes the Vanguard S2 for Weatherby, I believe. My 270 is a tack driver with nosler partition 160's. Can't imagine the '06 being any different.
Welcome to AH Mr. Larson. I have been researching safari operators in the East Cape for my next hunt. Tell us a bit about your hunts and hunt area. Animals you specialize in. Which if any other safari operators have hunting rights on your reserve? Do you PH for any safari operations...
Art, I was there Sept 3-15 and didn't see the AH hat. In the picture with the buffalo skull mounted to the post, there is a long narrow table (not seen in the picture) that is positioned on the right hand side of the entry doorway as you come in from the outside. On that table is a wood...
Vanguard, Enjoyed your hunt report with Cruiser. My wife and I met Carel about half way to JNB on our drive back from our hunt the day before you arrived. Hans drove us half way to the airport where he stopped to pick up John. Carel had driven John from JNB for his hunt at Cruiser. Carel...
Exciting Lion come to dinner story Bruce. With him that close I'd be watching my backside. Nervous time to be sure. Certainly an adventure for the memory banks. You should be acclimated to that weather being from Gillette. Dry heat always better than humidity I grew up with N. eastern NE...
Great adventure Bruce. We had a hunter in camp at Cruiser that lost a waterbuck the ph said was one of the best he had seen in years. The guy rented a helicopter for an hour to no avail. Them animals can hide when they want to.
How are you handling your taxidermy from 3 separate hunts?
Amazing how many people come out of the woodwork that have hunted with Cruiser. Although I had a very successful hunt it seemed too easy. I'm not used to having all the grunt work done for me. No gutting, skinning, packing and butchering the harvest. No long sweaty hikes back to camp at days...
Maybe I'm just different. I had the total opposite experience. Couldn't sleep and just unsettled on the way over and comfortable with lots of sleep coming back. Guess accomplishing my objectives and having a great experience relaxed me for the ride home. By the way, no drugs of any kind...
Congrats on a classic plains game hunt. Great looking trophies and pictures of the area. Wonderful time had by all no doubt! Hard to imagine all the fly time was that enjoyable. That was the only downside to my hunt. 20.5 hours fly time, yuck!
Thanks Chris. looked up your hunt on cruiser newsletter. I can see why it took so long to get trophies back. You must be starting a museum. Your kids must of had a blast. You're raising a couple of great hunters. Hans and Frekkie are quite a pair. Always fun to be around.
Will be up your...
Cruiser Safaris 2016, September 04 - 14.
Hunting Cruiser Safaris was a unique experience for this old hunter. Hunting in Limpopo province of South Africa on lowland bushveld was challenging. Desert like conditions with thick bush reminds one of parts of the southwest United States. It's...
Came upon your story while researching safari operations in Namibia for my next hunt. What a beautiful charitable family you have. You are truly blessed. The story of your adventure with Westfalen, the pictures of their hunting area and the quality of the animals will help immensely when I...
++ Uploading your video of the hunt to youtube would be great. Those of us old folks who probably will never get to hunt elephant would enjoy the vicarious experience.
Charlie. Will you be able to post a transcript here on AH for those of us that can't attend?
You probably posted your elephant hunt story here but I missed it. Will you post that link please. Thank you sir.
Very articulate well thought out article,Hans. Should be mandatory reading for preservationists and conservationists alike. Especially liked your first hand examples of the conservation approach working for the local economic good. I think you could make it on the lecture circuit if this hunting...
Jim,
If you reload you may want to try 160 gr. Partitions in your 270. My weatherby vanguard loves em. Took Canadian moose at 230 yds with perfect mushroom found on opposite side of double lung shot. Complete pass through on caribou frontal chest shot at 40 yards.
Robert,
I appreciate your thoughts and agree with all of it. Although Trump is not my first choice, if he is the Republican nominee I will hold my nose and support him. We can't have everything we want in a nominee, but he is better than anything the Dems are offering.
I joined the NRA to...
And here it is, the heart of the story. The planning, anticipation, practice and travel all culminating to the ultimate conclusion. Great adventure Charlie and thanks for sharing. Congratulations!
That is high praise indeed, by trusting Paul to do his thing. It's good to work with a person who offers advice on work in his area of expertise. I experienced the same thing with a remodeling job in my home. A taxidermist who interacts with his clients offering options based on his expertise...
tarbe, Your waterbuck horns look like they should, natural. Nice earthen color at the base and darker towards the tips. Paul must have touched them up after boiling. Same with the "goat". Did that cost extra?
Thanks Brickburn. A man of few words, but the pictures speak 1000's. Looks like solid core bone. Can the horn be mounted on say a shoulder mount without the core? I'm probably not on point with this thread, but at least I'm learning something. Are there any plains game with antlers like...
Wonderful explanation Diamondhitch. I've been curious how the Kudu horn differs from the others. I've seen displays of their inner horn. What's that all about?
