Ruger .450/400 NE. As New and unfired

Thanks. I’ve been on the lookout for a D profile bbl. They are not easy to come by. I have more buffalo than I know what to do with, but I’ve got a hankering to hunt one with a No 1 in .450/400 using one of Roger Renner’s ghost ring sights.

But it sounds like you are having hendershots load ammo for you? If so, they can solve this problem for you.

    160 Grain A-Frames out of a HS .275 Rigby?

I’m a little lost on this thread. If you want to shoot a heavier bullet with a different ogive, why can’t you just measure the desired overall length needed and load to that length? You may take up some case capacity by doing so but powder selection should resolve any issues. What am I missing?

Obviously you do this with a dummy round.

You get close by blacking bullets and then backing off loa until it just clears the lands. Then backing off for your desired ‘jump’ and you know where to set loa.

    160 Grain A-Frames out of a HS .275 Rigby?

I load the 160’s for NA. Absolutely excellent load for the 7x57/.275. As mentioned above, for bigger critters in the bush where you never shoot past 200, I prefer the 175’s. They offer better penetration. I get total pass through with them, even on the quartering shots on larger PG.

    160 Grain A-Frames out of a HS .275 Rigby?

If your plan is to use the rifle in the African bush on plains game, you are giving up a lot of capability by not using 175 gr A-Frames. I am surprised that they cannot be loaded to the same overall length as any other bullet, just giving up some powder capacity. What overall length keeps you...

Sorry, I should have explained, the rifles with the C weight barrels (more common) weigh 9.0 pounds. The D weight version comes in at 9.75 pounds. I’m trying to figure out which one you have.

IMO stay out of the way and let the kids advance based on their capability and work ethic. I have spent a lot of time in third world slums where folks, no matter how capable, cannot climb out of the mire without help. That is not the case in this country. Kids have no one to blame but...

Any suggestions as to how old this bull is

I’m certainly not an expert, but from what I can see a good hard bossed bull that has not begun breaking down physically or in the horns. This would make him at least 8 but likely less than 12. Certainly a good mature bull. Congratulations!

How Common Are Gastric Issues Post-African Hunt

Totally agree. I always have CIPRO and Doxy with me and am religious about my malaria meds, having contracted malaria once. At the first sign of intestinal discomfort I start a course of CIPRO. It knocks most bugs out in three or four hours.

I’ve used Gracy with mixed results, the one bad result was potentially really, really bad. I switched to Jennifer and have been very satisfied with her service. However, I am sure they all stub their toe from time to time. Without firearms I would never use them. I am a diamond and multi...

Do You Still Gut Your Deer?

This is exactly what I do including removing the tenderloins from the top. From the time a deer hits the ground on our farm to the meat cooling in a dedicated fridge is about 45 minutes. And you absolutely can get the tenderloins out of an ungutted deer without making a mess.

Have you done a driven pheasant/grouse hunt in the UK or Spain?

Geese can be tough because they are not necessarily going in the direction they are pointing. I’ve never seen another bird side slip as much as a goose. At least a pheasant is typically flying in the direction he is pointing.

Have you done a driven pheasant/grouse hunt in the UK or Spain?

I couldn’t agree more. I’ll never forget my first drive. At the time I was a master class sporting clays competitor, and so reasonably competent with a shotgun. I was on the line between two friends, both instructors at Holland and Holland. They schooled me quite badly on that first drive...

Have you done a driven pheasant/grouse hunt in the UK or Spain?

I have been on a number of driven hunts in the UK. I absolutely love it. A shoot with proper high birds is some of the most difficult shooting you will ever do. I am working on a driven partridge hunt in Portugal next year.

    Hesitations about Africa

My biggest hesitation in hunting in Africa was hunting with a PH. I grew up on a farm in Canada and spent most of my career in Wyoming and Alaska. I had never hunted with a guide before going to Africa. This included whitetail, muley, sheep, caribou, black bear, brown bear, et al. My...

How many are addicted to Africa and need yearly fix?

I was certainly in that mode for half a dozen years. I’m now diversifying with Western US and European big game hunts. More than anything, I’m getting back to prioritizing my greatest hunting passion, wild birds (the wild part is key, I would just as soon shoot clays as preserve birds)...
