G'day Ray , i have the win 70 in 416rem mag , it's fitted with leupold bases and quick detach rings , fitted with a leupold vx3 1.25-5 x 20. Have no worries with sight picture etc , same rifle as your 375 , i have not tried a larger scope but , i don't require it on the 416.

Rugers have always been good to me , got a handful of sakos , quite a few mauser and mauser derivatives and only one remington 700 in 8mm rem mag.

Good to hear the weight adding worked , might look at giving mine an extra pound , it's a great fast moving rifle , but she is a bit snappy.

Send it back , get a refund off cooper , buy a win70 safari in 416 rem mag. Unfortunately you will have to use a loaner this time but there is no way i would take that rifle dg hunting , i just wouldn't have confidence in it.

Hello Tim , i have a fn commercial chambered in said cartridge, with a 347grn woodleigh sp and 63grn of adi 2208 gives 2112fps . I beleive 2208 has the same burn rate as varget. Still working up a 400grn load.

I don't think energy is the issue here , everyone is talking about the velocity the ammo is capable of. You can handle 5000ftlbs at 2300 but when that 5000 is coming back at 2700 fps , then you get problems.

You'll need to find out what load they regulated the double with , otherwise your in for a lot of R&D.

I would leave it open sighted and buy a 9.3x62 or a brno 375h&h for the scoped stuff. That rifle is too stunning to tamper with.

If the mauser werks deemed the std 98 action strong enough for big rounds , they wouldn't have made the magnum action. Just because you can make it fit , doesn't mean it's a great idea.

Woodleigh bullets have a loading manual they made with some input from Graeme, that has loading data for english doubles , when i get home from work in the morning i'll have a look for your info...if you'd like?

A lot of the large calibres were only squeezed into std length actions (98 mausers) because in most cases it was all that was available to the gunsmith to work with. The 500 jeffery will fit in std actions , but that is why it has the short neck and the rebated rim to fit on the 98 bolt face ...

The fellas here have already put forward a wealth of figures for different calibres , so we won't go over traveled ground. Shooting large calibres represent a certain cost.....cause everythings big , presses, dies, bullets , cases and powder by the truckload. Best thing would be to try and test...

458 lott is more available , but i have a 500 jeff , and it is more fun . Handloading you can take it down to about 4800ftlbs at muzzle and then wind it all the way up to 8100, if you don't mind getting hit with a cricket bat. :D

I'd be thinking 3-4 beers before dinner and maybe 2 scotches after , after all you are in africa to absorb everything.. ..bit hard to do if your a booze hound.:sleep:
