    416 WSM first range trip

Once I dig out the 2nd round the 3rd round feeds from the right ok. It’s a staggered box mag, R, L, R, 3 rounds full. Will check other stuff as you guys suggested. Thanks.

    416 WSM first range trip

The 1st round when mag is full with 3 rounds feeds from the right side and second jamming cartridge from the left side. So what can I do to correct this?

    416 WSM first range trip

Update, actually having problems feeding 416, 400gr Hornady RN bullets but the Speer and Barnes pointed bullets feed fine so I’m gonna stick with those instead of modifying the feed rails. Funny it’ll feed the 1st round from the magazine perfect every time but the second one jams every time...

    Anyone have a 35/300 WSM

I’ve been using winchester and federal brass 300wsm to 416 with no issues, usually don’t crimp. Brass comes out a lot shorter so I’ve never had to trim. I think 9.3 or 375 would be better if you ever wanted to go after the big stuff.

    416 Taylor loads

    Sounds like a BSA action?

    416 WSM first range trip

Yes, better bullet selection was my reasoning. 300-350gr bullets work best in my Short Action rifle. I dont think anyone makes bullets under 400gr in 425 caliber. I can get copper or lead in 416.

    416 Taylor loads

Nothing above 375 on the bullet listings. Unless that means they are out of stock now? I wish they would make a 300, 350gr option in 416. I would also like a 160gr option for 6.5mm on my wish list.

    416 Taylor loads

Speaking of Nosler 400gr partitions I don’t see anything listed above 375? Did Nosler stop making partitions over 375??

    416 WSM first range trip

Good, I have to shoot more. I was more focussed on pressure signs. I find the IMR 3031 powder shoots best in my gun. Too bad I got a good price on 2lbs of W748, but it is good enough for moose or bear out to 200yrds.

    School me on M98 actions

Ruger just released a 9.3x62, Sako/Tikka still makes them, there should still be Huskavarna and M98 actions around already chambered in 9.3x62.

    416 WSM first range trip

Tried some Barnes 300gr TSX FB bullets, they are basically the same dimensions as the Speer 350gr lead bullets. Loaded 63gr IMR 3031, OK, and 67gr W748, OK. Both full case not too compressed at 2.860” O.A.C.L. Impact about 4” higher at 100m than the 350’s No chrony.

    416 Taylor loads

I’ve been using Taylor load data for my 416WSM build. I got info from Hand loader Magazine and their LoadData section. May have to expand powder selection, IMR3031,W748, H4895 are all working great for me, extrapolated from Taylor loads.

    404 Jeffery Reloading Help

I can just remove the pin from my RCBS or Redding dies when sizing if I don’t want to punch the primers out.

Disappointed In My New 404 Jeffery

Just for the record I didn’t get a muzzle break on my 416WSM even though the smith did recommend it. Don’t regret it.

Don’t guides hate muzzle breaks? Anyone attest to that?

Disappointed In My New 404 Jeffery

I have a 416WSM that shoots bullets about the same as the old 404 loads of 2150fps, which is why I’m reading about the 404. It’s easy to shoot and weighs under 10lbs with 2-7x scope. Like a 12ga slug gun. I say go with the old loads and enjoy.

    416 WSM first range trip

Just a barrel change and stock milled out for the bull barrel contour (0.8”dia at muzzle) , no action work. Feeds good as long as I keep cartridge length to 2.860” max. 3 in the hinged floor magazine. Only tried 3 bullets 350gr Speer, 400gr Hornady SP RN, 350gr Barnes TTSX at 2.870”.

    416 WSM first range trip

Final loads on 416WSM with SPEER 350gr bullets, had to return Chrony, no speed data: I) IMR4895 66gr full or slightly compressed. Ii) W748 66gr also full or slightly compressed. Tried 67gr with both seemed too hot and compressed load. Accuracy not as good but that’s probably the recoil effect I...

    416 WSM first range trip

Thanks for the help. Bullet selection in Canada is limited. Speer and Barnes seem easier to get and maybe Woodleigh in 416 cal. Flat bases seem the way to go for maximum powder space in my set-up. Speer 350gr Spritzers, Barnes 300gr TSX and if I can get them 340gr Woodleigh Spritzers are my best...

Thank you, what is the Length of the Raptor bullets with the tip? It looks like you can put the tip on or off? I have a Weatherby Vanguard/Howa short action that limits cartridge length around 2.86”. Bullets around 1.250” seem to work best in my 2.1” WSM case. From this forum it seems Winchester...

    416 WSM first range trip

That plastic tip adds a lot of length in a short action. I’ve thought of turning it off in a lathe? I think the standard all metal bullet design is better for large calibers. Really what am I going to gain with a BT in my little carbine?
  22. D

    416 WSM first range trip

350gr TTSX w/ 64gr W748 Choreographed only 2140fps compressed load. Think I’ll give up on the 350gr TTSX Barnes in the WSM and stick with shorter Lead bullets. The 300gr Barnes are only 1.256” long, may try in future.
  23. D

    416 WSM first range trip

Didn’t you have to open the bolt face on the Siam action for the WSM? I think the case head is 0.535”, just over the standard magnum 0.532”. Regular mausers are 0.473” head diameter, not familiar with Siam mauser dimensions.
  24. D

    416 WSM first range trip

I think the Taylor is a better choice after doing the 416WSM but don’t regret it. 458Win mag cases should be easy to get and form to Taylors and there is lots of published data.

    416 WSM first range trip

With 350gn Speer hotcore 70gn of AR2206H gave 2417fps Also tried some 416WSM 400 gr Hornady RN with 57gr IMR3031 with some room for more, again no chrony but no pressure signs. Whacking 10” gong at 100yds no problem.

    416 WSM first range trip

Fired some cartridges with Barnes 350gr TTSX, Winchester 748 powder today, 62, 63, 64gr slightly compressed. No time for Chrony info, just checked for pressure signs, all ok, shot great.

    416 WSM first range trip

Barrel is just under 20”. With Speer 350 I could squeak a little more 4895 in the case but 3031 is maxed. Most on the site are using Accurate 2520 but I haven’t been able to get any. I’m happy w/the Speer bullets, just want to juice up the Barnes 350gr TTSX a little more. Think I can get some...

Will have to see how much 2520 I can fit in my WSM case when I try it. TTSX seems to shoot well with everything.

    416 WSM first range trip

None yet, but I’ve maxed out those powders and am happy with the Speer loads. Have to see what else I can try for the 350gr TTSX. Wanna hit 2250fps. Availability limited here. I even tried H4350 as I have lots on hand but only got 1750fps slightly compressed load.

Emailed Barnes for required velocities to expand on the Barnes TTSX. Barnes rep,” An impact velocity of 1700 fps will get you about 1.7x expansion of the bullet’s original diameter. I forgot to mention the other Cartridge combo on the right was the Speer 350gr HC, same weight big length difference in Bullets. Both loaded approximately to the same cartridge length. Borrowed a chronograph just gotta get to the range now to get more data.

I don’t think any bullet can really resist brush, I hit this deer in the neck while moving with a 0.416”-350gr Speer HC at 35yrds through brush aiming at his chest.

416WSM on Siamese Mauser & 416/348Ackley Improved on Martini

416WSM on Siamese Mauser & 416/348Ackley Improved on Martini

Seems complicated. Couldn’t you get a normal set of custom reloading dies from Redding or who ever? I just have 2 dies, one set of forming/primer punch and bullet seating/crimping. With the 40deg shoulder I would think you’d have to rely on fire forming for the last step with raw 300wsm brass...

    416 WSM first range trip

You gotta admit the older you get the more you like to carry a lighter shorter rifle. I don’t mind a 26” tube on my single shot but gone are the days when I’ll carry a full length bolt gun with one. I couldn’t imagine a 26” barrel w/suppressor, ear plugs are lighter.

    416 WSM first range trip

I wanted a short handy gun so I got a Vanguard SA. Work with what you have. I think free-bore form the reamer helps with pressure spikes any how. It’s just ironic that the longest bullet shoots the best so far in a SA cartridge, WTF.

    416 WSM first range trip

The 350gr TTSX is compressed a little at 53gr IMR 3031, very compressed at 55gr with a stiffer bolt lift but the SPEER 350 and Hornady RN SN 400gr loads have some room for more powder at 55gr IMR3031 with no pressure signs. All with Rem 9-1/2 magnum primers. I like the powder, it seems like I...

55gr IMR 3031 was way too compressed, that was the flyer. Figured it was worth a try as I used 55gr for the Speer 350gr Hot Core.
