    9.3x62 Noob

Great rifle, great cartridge, but for hunting you're handicapping yourself with too much scope. There is a good reason 3-9x or 2-10x or something similar has traditionally been the best selling hunting scope magnification. The modern trend to very high magnification scopes is based on...

Are there benefits to using a suppressor for plains game hunting

I'm glad that suppressors are a choice available to many hunters. I'm legally restricted and can't use a suppressed rifle to hunt at home. But I don't feel very sad about that. I have only used a suppressor on one African hunt and a couple of hunts in Germany. Didn't like it at all. In my...

    Ideal/preferred cartridge on species

It was actually the quickest bear kill I've ever experienced. Dead where it stood. Bullet was a 115 gr. Nosler partition loaded to 2800 fps. Impact was broadside, high shoulder, bullet broke rear scapula, and spine, and far side scapula, and in the middle destroyed the aorta. Base of bullet...

    Ideal/preferred cartridge on species

I'll write what I've actually successfully "used" for some on your list vs what I'd "like" to use if given the opportunity for the ones I have not hunted yet ... - roe (buck) used .222 Rem, .30-06 - fallow (stag) like 7x64 - red deer (stag) like 7x64 - wild boar used...

175 Grain Bullet in Normal No Alterations 275 Rigby HS

Well Rookhawk I agree with much of what you wrote, and disagree with one small detail. I have a fair bit of experience with both cartridges, (currently own three 7x57 rifles and three 7x64 rifles) hunt game with them in various habitats, and with various bullets. My amusement is with nostalgia...

175 Grain Bullet in Normal No Alterations 275 Rigby HS

This discussion makes me smile, and also very happy that I prefer the 7x64 cartridge, which was designed correctly from the beginning and avoids all this nonsense.

What have you hunted with your .303?

My first ever hoofed animal, a whitetail deer. Borrowed my brother's rifle when I was 15 years old. And that's all. I also owned a sporterized Lee Enfield #4 for a couple years, but never killed an animal with it. I sold it and replaced it with a .308 win and never looked back. I may have had a...

Where have your failures been with your doubles?

I've had a couple of firing pins break. One of the rifle barrel of a Merkel O/U combination gun, one on a Kreighoff single shot. That's it. Both were simple to fix. My Merkel 140 AE has not had a serious failure, just a bit of unnoticed rust & crud once interfering with ejection. But it still...

I’ve been in that exact situation, and decided to use USA made “8mm Mauser” stamped brass for the .318 bore and proper European 8x57IS stamped brass for the modern rifle.

    What is your deadliest weapon???

I haven’t kept any of my various rifles long enough for any one to achieve a legacy. But my Browning Citori White Lightning 16 Ga. Has been my go-to for all upland bird and some mixed bag hunting for many years. Grouse, Partridge, Pheasant, and many ducks and some geese. It just fits so well and...

Old School vs. New Tech: What’s Your Go-To Rifle for the Veld?

I’m kinda stuck in the middle. My favourite Safari rifle is a very modern Verney-Caron Impact Plus switch barrel / takedown bolt action rifle in 9.3x62. Blued steel barrel, aluminum receiver, nice but plain walnut stock, good cut checkering, QD mounts, and detachable magazine. It looks sorta...

    What did you reload today?

I regularly load ammunition for my .222 rifles. It is my preferred centre fire .22 caliber. I currently own two .222’s - an Anschutz and a CZ ZKK. Both shoot accurately with almost any published load of IMR or H 4198 or Benchmark or RL7 or Win 748 and 40-55 gr. bullets.

    Trouble with Remington primers

I've used thousands of Remington 9-1/2 and 9-1/2 Magnum primers. Never a high seating problem with any of them. I've mostly seated primers with a Lee hand tool, but also have used the seater on my Hornady press and the one on my Forster Co-ax press, and in recent years a RCBS hand priming tool...

    What's your one favorite caliber?

"Favourite" is difficult to define... The most useful, practical cartridge for me is the .308 Win. What I started hunting local game with and in reality nothing I've tried since is demonstrably "better" for hunting our various deer, elk, moose bears etc. I like the ammunition and bullet choices...

Noblex Red Dot Sights - Feedback?

Docter / Noblex are the most commonly used red dot sights in Europe. To my understanding they were the first to popularize red dot reflex sights for driven game hunting. I have two of them. I like them a lot. They have the same mount footprint as the cheaper and less precise Burris Fast Fire...

    Black bear hunting

    First shot is slow

I was shooting my .357 magnum Win M92 carbine with some test loads the last couple days. I also experienced some slow velocity first shots. I also have no explanation. I was testing loads with Hodgdon Lil'gun powder and 180 gr. bullets, quite a different load. Mysterious.

    What did you reload today?

I loaded 300 heavyweight cartridges for my little Winchester M92 lever action carbine in .357 magnum. 180 gr. Sierra Flat Point Jacketed, with 14.0 gr. Lil'Gun powder for 1700 fps. Makes the little carbine black bear capable if necessary in a pinch, but it's mostly a small game/pest/plinking...

    My first Snipe

I love hunting snipe, and do so every chance I get. In fact a snipe was the very first game bird I ever shot, which was when I was ten years old. Shotgun choices for a Woman

Models built specifically for women are usually required for good fit. Women have longer necks and narrower shoulders than men, and the stock needs not only less length but more drop at heel and a higher comb. Smaller radius grip, and narrower grip helps too. And lighter barrels. It all adds up.

Chainsaws and those who use them

I use four different Stihl saws and they have served me well. Two industrial models at our British Columbia bush camp, a little electric one at home, and a light / cheap trail saw at our Saskatchewan hunting camp. Settled on Stihl because that's the brand local dealers stock and service. And...

Bringing 2 guns on a dangerous game hunt?

When I hunted elephant in that area with CMS two years ago, the elephant hunt was all done the first day. So after that I was hunting impala and wildebeest with a .416. It worked OK, but if a 9.3 was available instead, it would have been nicer to carry and nicer to shoot. I greatly prefer...

I don't hate any of them, but choose not to use any cartridge with a belt - except of course the .375 H&H. That one gets a full endorsement. I suppose the .416 Remington is OK too, I never owned one, but I would prefer the Rigby.

A New Offering Of .375 Holland & Holland Magnum Ammunition Has Been Released On The Market

So what! I say good on them. And wish them...

    Mauser 98 vs Blaser R8

Traditional bolt action rifles are far more complicated than the R8! They require twice as many manipulations of the bolt after firing. - "Traditional" push up, then push back, then push forward, then push down. - R8 - Push back, then push forward. Done. :)
