    Future One-Rifle PG-DG Setup

I used a 416 RM for my all rounder. I took two scopes, a 1-4 and a 2-7. I of course used the lower power for Buffalo but in a pinch could've used the 2-7. Warne detachable mounts allowed me to switch the scopes and both held zero just fine. I took plains game out to 250 yards with this setup. No...

Learn from my mistakes - Buffalo

My PH is very experienced and explained that every bullet put into a buffalo increased the chance of recovery. Even less than perfect shots helped. He also thankfully said that he would not shoot unless absolutely necessary on a charge. We were in a mountainous region and finding and recovering...

Learn from my mistakes - Buffalo

My PH warned me that a fatally shot buffalo would often cover some ground. He said to keep shooting as long as he was on his feet. I practiced for it and it was needed. Four good shots in him to put him down. Only lasted about 20 seconds but pretty exciting. He also had me shoot him in the spine...

    DRY firing practice

Beating the dead horse. Yes. Dry fire with dummy cartridges so that you are working the bolt and practicing follow up shots. You can't doing it too much. Also, practice reloading your rifle while you keep an eye on your animal. You should be able to reload without looking at your rifle.

First South African Safari....A bit overwhelmed

My wife and I hunted with Limcroma and were very pleased. I think the smallest fenced area that we hunted was 12,000 acres. Went through a gate and didn't see the fence at all. They have some great hunting for Bushbuck along the Limpopo and Crocodile rivers. Please remember that "game proof"...

Tips for a novice horse rider

Get some riding in before you go or you are going to have some mighty sore muscles. Also learn to balance properly so you are not using the reins and bit to hold yourself in the saddle. Loose reins and a low headed horse make for a relaxed ride.

Bringing spent cartridges on plane in checked bag

Not even remotely worth the trouble you may find yourself in. If you are not traveling with a rifle then there is no reason to have those empties, which will be considered the same as live ammunition. It is also illegal to bring those into the UK without the proper import paperwork and license.

Check the crossbolts. I found one of mine loose. That's all I did to mine and everything's been fine for over 300 rounds of full power loads. Mine was assembled in Portugal and was flawless cosmetically and has proven to be flawless mechanically. It's a 416 RM.

What have you actually had stolen getting to, coming from or on safari?

Only two trips and nothing stolen. I do keep all of my cash on my person, never leaving it in a room or bag. I use a hard sided large pelican case as a suitcase so it can't be cut open. The only time I've used a credit card was at a business owned by my PH. I really only worry about losing my rifle.

    Metal wear in hinged shotguns

I will admit that modern target guns are very durable. I witness the abuse they can take without breaking every week at my club. I am coming at this from a different perspective. I shoot vintage sxs guns - mostly British- some of which are over 140 years old. I've had guns put back on face...

    Metal wear in hinged shotguns

There are many factors involved in keeping break action guns tight and on face. Greasing the hinge pin and bolts, using sensible loads for which the gun was designed and keeping the gun clean. I would add another, how the shooter opens and closes their gun. Slamming the gun open or closed will...

I could not watch the whole video. Just too painful. Interesting that you describe it like being in a car accident. That's exactly what I told my wife about the recoil when my rifle was at its original weight. I told her that it felt like I'd been in a car crash. I too had headaches until I brought the weight of my gun to what worked for me. I...

Avoiding CTE, brain damage, retina injury etc with big bore rifles ?

My 416 RM weighed 9 lb 4 oz w/o scope and it beat me up. A little better with a scope at about 10 lbs 4 oz. I added weight to make it weigh 12 pounds with the scope and it was comfortable to shoot. I carried it without a sling for 10 days no problem. Add some weight.
