    1903A3 Springield stock

Just need to be sure any stain doesn't keep epoxy from soaking into wood, thats why I used the nitric acid / heat process. Sealed first, then bedded with thickened eopxy, just in case stock moved a little when sealed. Too late to edit above.

    1903A3 Springield stock

Found a Bell and Carlson synthetic for my m98 bad weather rifle in the barrel of take off stocks at a small local gunshop for the princely sum of ten bucks. Couple small marks and has the old style sling swivel rods bonded into the stock, but was a good find since I didn't need anything fancy...

Reloading can be dangerous and scary if you don't do it right

If you have the fired cases before the high pressure round, try seating live primers to see if primer pockets are stretched. If they go in easy, you were already above case pressure limit. Can just pop those primers in th rifle outside to not risk setting one off when decapping. I am wondering...

    Win M70 ejector adjustment (CRF-models)

I have a G3 / HK91 semi auto build from a parts kit. Trust me, your brass aren't dented much. My rifle can mostly close a case mouth once in a while, then throws brass 30 feet. Just push a drift punch into case mouth so taper sort of rounds case mouth back open and then run thru sizer die. Have...

    Zastava 300 WM

Have an older Zastava 7RM barelled to 375R. Feed rails needed to be opened up, mag box walls were thinned (widened mag), follower needed metal welded to side to match modified mag width (last round feed issue), ejector face welded up to add length (empty cases hitting on ejection port and not...

What Defines a Dangerous Game Rifle?

Is a dangerous game rifle anything that will usually dispatch the animal, or is a DG rifle what a PH carries and relies on to handle business when things go sideways and it needs to work every time? Lots of game up to and including elephant have been taken with black powder round ball, Martini...

    Browning Love?

7RM and 300WM should be max 3.340". The 375H&H should be 3.600 max. Not sure what OAL max in Browning magazime is. A little rail work and maybe slight magazine widening should allow a 375R or 416R to feed from a 7RM or 300WM magazine. More complicated (expensive) if action needs to be opened up...

    Browning Love?

If mag box is long enough then H&H makes the most sense, but the Ruger would be same length as 7RM. Just thinking the R would be less cost to manufacture.

    Opinions please: Pros/Cons of .375 Ruger vs .375 H&H

Barnes 375LRX, 270 gn with .449BC looks interesting. Especially if hunting in an area with bears. Makes the 375R seem pretty practical in the US.

Since the 7mmRM is available maybe Browning should consider chambering for 375Ruger also.

Having problems feeding a model 70 .416 Rem Mag

Do you know if it was a 416RM from factory or a rebarrel? I would remove the mag spring and try loading with just follower. If 3 fit, take a good look at mag spring, some have different radius at bends and can be taller when fully compressed. Follower may also have tabs on bottom to keep from...

    458 Lott/Win mag

Just get Lott brass and dies. If interested in accuracy, what's the point of jumping a bullet over .300" to the rifling? Also the CZ Safari Mag has a very long magazine and the short WM cases may cause feed issues. A 458 WM in a WM chamber will have to negotiate the funnel throat starting .010...

The “458 Winchester Magnum, all the cartridge you’ll ever need” thread

So, the 38 spl is better than a 357 mag? Never have understood the love for the Win Mag but hate of the Lott. In these times of limited ammo and reloading supplies availability, the Lott opens up "a lot" of options.

    DEPRIMING LIVE PRIMERS

Be very aware of where the primer will go if it pops. Old Lee press drops primers straight down thru the ram and have heard of guys burying a primer in their leg if underneath it. Velocity of a popped primer is surprising under right circumstances. If you don't have a reloading press handy, a...

.458 win mag for North America

You may want to try 450 TSX or other long bullets in your WM and see what the group size is. Some (most?) WM do not like short bullets. Have reloaded for two and could get MOA or very close to that with 450 or 500 grain bullets but accuracy was much worse with 3-400 grain. Short bullets are out...

Current state of Dangerous Game optics?

One rifle for North American big game?

Depends where you plan on hunting. When in bear country, I carry a 375R or heavier. Some areas, a shot is like ringing the dinner bell for cleanup of the gut pile. If only one rifle, it would be a 375R or H&H with 23 or 24" barrel and a 2-7x or 1-8x scope on good QD rings for using irons after...

    416 Rigby and filler

You can try firing a few groups normally (or tipping mizzle down first), then fire a few by tipping muzzle vertical and lowering gently onto shooting bag for each shot. That should insure powder against flash hole consistently. See if there is a difference in group size. May even show a...

450 Rigby and whether to scope or not?

Up close, I find a true 1x scope with a heavy duplex to be as fast as irons. Anything aboxe 1.25x is slow and above 2x is really slow for me close in. A little magnification doesn't seem to bother some people at bad breath distance, but our eyes are all different. Would check any scope out for...

    Epoxy Cleanup

Acetone is ok but may wreck finish if it gets on a stock. My suggestion of vinegar is for hands where even acetone leaves a dark residue behind and is not healthy to use on skin. Epoxy Cleanup

    Tally windage problem

Mirror trick insures the croashairs are centered. Counting clicks can still leave crosshairs off center if scope is damaged internally. A small mirror can be used with scope still mounted. A mirror with non-paralell surfaces might leave you a couple clicks off, but will be very close to...

There is a small possibility that scope mount caps have been switched between bases or turned 180 degrees. Reamers .458 Lott vs. .450 Watts

Thanks, definitely interested in how they handled the oversize funnel throat of the 458WM. Have dealt with two 458 WM that hated lighter bullets and gave shotgun patterns with cast bullets. Did find a recipe with one cast bullet and COW filler that gave almost acceptable accuracy in both tho.

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

Might be worth the investment for Hornady / Ruger to insure that at least a few boxes of 375 & 416 Ruger ammo is available in shops near Safari areas. Ammo availability seems to be the biggest hurdle for these rifles. Maybe those taking Ruger rifles to Africa, could forget to bring a box of...

Posted by Mule Deer (John Barsness) a few years ago (2011) on campfire. Believe he knows a bit about rifles- "The tapered throat is quite common, even though parallel throats tend to be more accurate. The way I understand it, tapered throats evolved with black powder rounds as a way to allow...

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

I went with 375 R on a Zastava action, mostly because of the performance advantage over an H&H. Considered a 416 R, but settled on the 375. Would be great if Ruger would offer a 458 WM on same platform as the 375, that would be a great pair.

What tricks to put on light weight 416 rem mag to help reduce recoil

DGR, I understand your points about a supressor. Maybe try a Past strap on recoil pad, makes a huge difference if installed recoil pad is bottoming out. Also a linear compensator (instead of a brake) tames recoil a bit but still sends muzzle blast away from you.

Any point in a 'small' double rifle?

    Winchester Model 70 375 H&H vs CZ550 375 H&H

I believe the CZ550 Magnum comes into its own at 416 and above. The Mod 70 is a fantastic rifle and you really won't go wrong with either. Would be good to shoulder both and see which fits best. Irons may be the priority if needed for a follow up or taking off the scope after ringing the dinner...

One of the best tools I have found for reloading is a machinists stereo magnifier. When primers are flipped up on the reloading tray, take a good look to see how consistent the primer mixture is in the cup. Some, like Fed, are full, others have the anvil visible, just looking for consistency...
