Out of Curiosity and purily hypothetical. How long is too long? A question for outfitters

I’m in the trades and well versed on multiple skills. I’ve fixed a gate, help mend water pipes dug up by elephant, rewired a room, adjusted and repaired a bunch of cabinets (my main occupation). Mostly because broken stuff or poorly done work drives me crazy. Dont need a companion to babysit me...

Safari Vehicle Breakdown and how much did it effect your hunt

Same here in the same number of hunts. Did have a slow leak, but the driver changed that himself when we were out tracking. Actually all the folks I have hunted with have had very good well taken care of equipment, always a spare, most often 2, and once even 3. One Hilux, one Unimog, the rest...

Can I shoot 2 Elephant in Zimbabwe?

$6K. So first trophy fee on tuskless $6k and a buffalo or tuskless for $ 7.5K as an add on. Cheap for a trophy fee? No; but normally a 10 day hunt 2 DG hunt at $1100/day…..so by doing 7 days instead of 10 its already $3300 under “normal” cost. Other hunter in camp was on a standard 10 day...

Can I shoot 2 Elephant in Zimbabwe?

I've done 2 tuskless on short hunts, 7 days, and have been given the option of hunting buffalo or tuskless again at an increased trophy fee as quota allowed. But no where near 50%. Additional $1500 over standard fee last time.

ZIMBABWE: 2024 - My First Trip To Africa, Dalton & York

Terrific hunt. Kariba is the largest RESERVOIR in the world by volume as its technically not a lake as it was created by a dam.

Add on excursions before or after the hunt

I'd say land in jberg, overnight, leave rifle, fly into Kruger for a tour, have outfit pick you up back in j berg and hunt. But if you want a ph involved, your stuck with their options. How about Madikwe? Borders limpopo on the west side. Good general plains game/elephant viewing, OK on lion...

Add on excursions before or after the hunt

I'd add, it's not just guest houses mentioned frequently here in j berg that cater to hunters, that will store guns/baggage. I book on my own and places in Port Elizabeth and Windhoek Had no issues with secure storage. I will add that it often has surprised outfits/ph finding out I landed a...

Add on excursions before or after the hunt

Out of 8 trips, only once did I not add additional travel, and always bring a gun. Lots of ways around gun storage. Henry at Rifle Permits arranged once, guest houses will help you out, and so will outfitters. Honestly I can't imagine getting g off a plane, hunting, and getting back on a plane...

    Overnight Harare

I have not used them for airport transport; but have had them arrange for a car/driver for me. Thats pretty typical for my trips; I get the front desk to arrange for trustworthy service and it’s always been relative inexpensive. J’Berg,Windhoek,Harare. Usually craft market/curios/gun...

    Overnight Harare

I’ve stayed at Amanzi half dozen times coming and going; including multiple days. Charlton McCallum use them for clients as they do a good job and are in proximity to their offices. I like the restaurant as they can cater to special requests (I have some food allergies and never an issue)...

Would you mount a Female Cape Buffalo?

I have Black Wildebeest male and female shoulder mounts, and Blue Wildebeest male and female euro’s next to each other. Having the females really makes the male horns more impressive for me. Aso happen to have memories on how the old mature females were hunted. I wouldn’t mind adding a cow...

    Hand made shield and spears

looks good. please dont set a block plane down on its blade like that, good woodworker always sets a hand plane down on its side. i use that as a test for guys who tell me they are awesome, and anyone who sets a plane down like that usually ends up emptying the dust collector and sweeping the...

Contact info for Jamy Traut Safaris

You picked a terrific outfit, have a great time. It’s a huge commitment of finances and mental anticipation put into these trips; so easy to fall into a trap of what if something’s wrong. I started that way, then had this revelation coming home from first trip, that I should be better at going...

    ZIMBABWE: Zimbabwe With Buzz Charlton

Huh, I actually only took one hat in a couple trips as the shirts aren’t what I like to wear; but CMS does a pretty darn good job on logistics all around. Even as a bottom end client who has to watch a budget and cant do every year for long hunts they have treated me unbelievably well. Sorry...

    QD sling swivels

Sauer has used flush cup, push button swivels forever on their 200/202 rifles. My Sauer sling on a 200 in 30-06 has been carried the most out of anything I own and has never given me issues. That gun is heavy too.

First time big game hunter - should I start with an African safari?

In 2016 hunting with KMG (who is a well know sponsor here); I shared camp with 3 young guys who booked themselves a hunt and 2 of them never hunted anything and the other had shot a couple deer. They had a great time of the whole thing. Went and played golf nearby one day, each took one animal...

    Pelican prerogatives - 1750 vs 1700 for int'l travel - experiences wanted

I have both, and have done several trips with both. The longer case for a bolt action and shorter for a Blaser; sometimes one barrel, sometimes 2….. I do multi stop itineraries on majority of hunting trips, hardly ever airport, hunt, airport; that short case is REALLY handy when doing multiple...

Benefits of Joining SCI or DSC

If you read a fair amount of posts on here, and you have an eye for who posts BS and who is legit; you’ll learn more. I’m a life member of SCI and went to a couple conventions many years ago; it was terrific for seeing all the possibilities for international hunts. But for me, I have booked...

What did you buy or book at the SCI Nashville convention

Bean field is his longer range rifles….and an action you supply or choose. I’m pretty sure he still calls his heavier larger bore guns “professional hunter” and built on his own action and barrels. I haven’t seen him in years, but Kenny was always fun to talk to and deal with when I ordered my...

    Early booking or last minute?

Kinda depends….. I have never booked more than 5 mos out and have never paid for airfare in ”prime time” slots either.……I’ve also never had a cold morning on safari more then a light jacket and frankly the idea of having to be cold on a hunt is revolting to me…..so I find off season airfare is...

I live in the North East, not to far from NYC and this is amost the same for me. Once I get explaining the conservation end of things, I almost always get a positive reaction and although a few would choose another way for me to enjoy my vacations; I have never been chided for my involvement...

I have a C-G Essex in 20/28 with a very low round count from both sets and going to be selling. It has been afield for pheasant and some clays, but in very good condition. Too Much Gun?

If you want to hunt buffalo you dont need a tune up first PG hunt, go hunt what you want. Lots of reports even on here with first time DG hunts and not always plains game. I didn’t get interested in buffalo or elephant until after several PG trips to several places. And my finances lined up...

    Scope for.375 h&h

I have both of the scopes in your poll on a 375hh in Talley QD rings. I carry both, and last couple of hunts for DG I used the 1.5-5 simply for the fact elephant shots are close, and I shoot it well both eyes open. In the 1.5-5 I have a 4A reticle. When done with elephant we baited hyena and...

2024 Cull Hunt Packages - KMG Hunting Safaris

I live near a pile of airports, flown from Albany,Bradley,LaGaurdia,Newark with guns once each and many times from JFK(atleast a dozen) I’m not sure why in CT you wouldn’t go direct to J’berg via Newark. Wildlife Safari after the hunt... what do you do with your rifles?

One time I used the hunting outfitter for Kruger and had no problem with having my rifle in the park, just a little bit of paperwork. First Buffalo hunt: Mozambique vs. South Africa

+1……gonna be hard to top my 2017 hunt with Len. OP…I did several SA and Namibia hunts both fenced and unfenced for plains game before booking a DG hunt in Zimbabwe. Had some really good PH’s (and one lemon); if I had to do it again I’d have done less hunts overall and done more DG hunts in...
