    on a lighter note...

Walked into a truck stop a few months ago and there were long lines for the available thrones except for one of them. I went into it and saw that the paper hanger had been torn off of the wall. It didn't bother me since I was on a long trip and just happened to have a small supply of paper...

    Reloads in Africa

On both of my hunts I have taken reloads in 20 round plastic boxes. Each trip I took 60 rounds over in a MTM style box that I lined with foam rubber to keep the plastic boxes from bouncing around. My first trip I shot exactly 20 rounds including sighting in, my second trip it was exactly 40...

    Binos for Africa

What it is going to come down to is get some that you will use here in the US, and not just in Africa. You'll be hunting in Africa for a maximum of 2 weeks, unless you really want to hunt there. But you'll be hunting here in the US a lot more than just 2 weeks.

    Binos for Africa

A lot will depend on what you use at home. If you have a nice pair no matter what the brand and you like using them then take them. On my two trips I used a pair of Leopold 10x42's. My first trip I had a pair of Cascades but I sent them to Leopold to get tightened up in the pivot and they...

Be careful who mounts your scopes

Most people would be surprised at just how many hunters do just that. My brother in law wanted me to load up some rounds for his 7 mm Rem mag. I told him that I wanted his rifle so that I could check a few things while shooting the loads. Turns out his scope was off 6". What really...

Be careful who mounts your scopes

If your gunsmith tells you that rings with just a single screw per side isn't good enough for a 375 and that you need to go with a double screw set up, how about some mounts with 3 screws per side? Those single screw rings have been holding scopes on rifles for years. The whole thing is to...

    45-70 dangerous game?

It is much like a parent telling a young kid that they can't do something, then that kid finds out for themselves that what the parent told them was impossible was indeed possible.

    Rifle Fillers

It's just that you get better ignition and burn of the powder if it is close to the primer. So a piece of filler to hold the powder at the bottom of the case helps.

    45-70 dangerous game?

That's the problem with most that are saying that you don't get the penentration with a 45-70. Odds are they are experiencing factory loads with soft bullets and because of the liability laws the cartridge manufacturer has no idea if you are shooting it out of a vintage trap door Springfield or...

    Rifle Fillers

Years ago I was loading some very light loads in a couple of pistol cartridges. I couldn't find anything in the loading departments so I went to a old gent in a feed and grain store that let people use his presses and dies if you purchased the components from him. He told me to go down to a...

    Shoulder Bump questions

Try this. Run the shell into the sizer die and pretty much just size the neck. Then try it in your rifle and see how it chambers. If it doesn't chamber screw the sizing die down 1/4 of a turn and try it all over again. When you get to the point that you can close the bolt with the...

    45-70 dangerous game?

What it comes down to is to wait for the correct shot before pulling the trigger. As the saying goes, a bad shot is bad shot no matter what the cartridge.

    45-70 dangerous game?

I haven't looked in quite a while but a number of loading manuals had two sections for the 45-70. One for older trapdoor and lever actions and another one for the Ruger #1 and #3 rifles that were loaded to higher pressures.

    New Visa requirements for Namibia

They do it because they can. Its the old rule, it is their game and if you want to play you have to pay and do it by their rules. I was actually surprised years ago at all the requirements that the US Government has in place for hunters who want to come here to hunt and or play.

    How does one remove this?

Get your wife's hair dryer and put some heat to it. You also might take a razor knife and go around the pad where it contacts the wood.

    How does one remove this?

Start with a #1 Phillip screwdriver and see if you can feel it on a screw, you can also try a small flathead screwdriver and do the same thing. If it's either one you may need to place a lot of pressure on the screwdriver as you remove the screws.

    45-70 dangerous game?

I think that with the proper bullet and load the old 46-70 would be perfectly fine on a DG hunt. It would be no different than those who choose to use a pistol, and I believe that it would be a lot more effective. There are those on here that believe that nothing smaller than a 20mm cannon...

    Game possibilities for .30-30 Contender

Back when Steve Herrett was playing around with the Contender and rifle rounds in it he designed the .30 Herrett off of the 30-30 case. He found it worked quite well on deer and pronghorn. When he started to look at hunting elk with it he necked the 30 Herrett up to 357 for the ability to...

    .270win and lead free ammunition

I've been shooting nothing but Barnes for the last 25 years and have had zero problems with accuracy, and in most cases they are more accurate than cup and core bullets. The one problem that arises is that they love a clean barrel, if you don't get the copper fouling out your accuracy is going...

DG calibers/energy laws versus rifle competency

Does the price of ammo impact your choice of a rifle caliber

What you mentioned is some of the fun in picking up a oddball cartridge or caliber. At one time I loaded for 3 different wildcats, none of the brass was available with their head stamp and even now the one that I load for doesn't have any factory brass. On dies, I haven't done much...

    Trophy care. Salting/Dip and pack?

Sounds like this is your first trip over to Africa. On both of my hunts in South Africa the outfitter had their own "salt sheds" where your skins will be stored from the time that they are taken off of the animal until they have enough of them to justify the trip to the dip and pack company...

Does the price of ammo impact your choice of a rifle caliber

If you are not a reloader it may factor into purchasing a larger caliber rifle. I have a 340 Weatherby that factory loads are around $130 if you can find them. I can load the same bullet at the same velocity for less than a couple bucks, once I have a case. If you want to shoot enough to...

Bullets that well advertised but were not that great

One problem with most bullets is that you need to use them for what they were intended for. The Nosler Balistic Tip was never touted as a big game bullet but one that improved accuracy on small game. Berger were a target bullet, until they came out with one that is intended for big game...

OK, it might be 50% or so, I'll have to go out to the garage to see. It is a higher concentration than is normally available in the majority of stores where only the beauty supply store sell it, and the last time that I picked some up I was questioned on what I was going to use it for.

I like to use Basic White and 100% peroxide that you can get from a beauty supply store. Mix the basic white and peroxide to make a past and then paint it onto the skull, place in a plastic bag for a couple of days and then rinse it off. But then I don't live in a area that has FIRE ants...

I've hunted quiet a bit here in Colorado and Utah with a handgun for both mule deer and elk. I've used handguns from the 357 up to 44 mag along with a few heavy loads in a Thompson Center Contender primarily in a 357 Herret based on a 30-30 case. The main thing with a handgun is that if you...

    Taxidermy in SA or U.S.

Where you are hunting and the taxidermist in the area will be a huge factor. I've done it both ways. The taxidermist that I used in SA was affiliated with the outfitter and puts out class taxidermy. But then there are other shops where you might as well as just get a mop head and put a...

When I decided to have my last set of trophies done in SA I figured that it would be close to the same cost as having them done here in the US and that included the extra shipping cost for 3 mounts and 5 euros. It ended up being around $1000 cheaper having them done in SA by a quality...
