Come to think of it...I demolished the unexploded grenade from a bouncing mine.. Its like a splinter hand grenade. First attempt was with with 250 gram TNT stick...it did not explode.. Bugger. Second attempt..veery carefully placed a 500 gram TNT block right beside it.. BOOM..it went off.

Gents..I have a Lyon & Lyon .577 3" BPE, Jones underlever screw grip hammer gun, , made year 1900. It is regulated for 167 grains blackpowder and 650 grain bullets (so engraved on the barrels). I plan to shoot it..got hold of 650 grain Woodleigh softs..but are these too hard for the barrels...

I put a Leupold red dot scope on my .470.. Have shot 4 cape buffalo with it thus far..

BTW, SRvet..have you shot the Krieghoff in .500NE..?

I would take the recoil reduser..the .500 use the same barrel profile as on the .470..they only bore it up. Recoil is stout compared to .470.. Unless I had the opportunity to hunt much elephant I would take the .470. I went for the .470..it crumples buffalo and it should be plenty for the odd ele..

Yes Matt, I actually also have an old double in .475 3 1/4...wich is a .450NE necked up to a .483 bullet.. It has the same ballistics as the .470 but is definitely a handloader job these days..

Based on popularity and availability I will say that in Africa .470NE rule and in Europe it is 9,3 x 74R. Personally I own and love doubles in both calibres.. For Africa, the .450/400 3" and 3 1/4NE also very good but it lacks the bloody thump of the .470..

A friendly warning on Kynamco ammunition.. I have personal experience with it in .416 Rigby, .500 Jeffery and .475 3.25NE. The .416 and .500 was clearly overloaded to the point that I had to pry the bolt open..both calibers.. Scary..stopped using it. (Norma factory in both those calibers are...

RL15 is very much like Vithavuori N150.. I load 90 grains behind a 500 grain Woodleigh ..my rifle is a .470 Krieghoff. A buddy load 91,5 grains behind same bullet in an identical rifle..his regulate best with that load...give 2150fps. These fastburning powders give significantly less recoil...

I hate to be the fly in the ointment, but as mentioned, the barrel flats have lots of pittings thats blued over. As mentioned, I would strongly suggest checking chamber and barrel condition and if the action is tight.. It also appear restocked wich detract value. Also have the barrels slugged...

Factory Hornady DGX Bonded give 2170fps from my .470 Krieghoff, regulates well.. Factory Norma 500 grain Woodies give 2140fps from same rifle.. 91,5 grain Vithavuori N150 and 500 grain Woodie soft give 2150fps.. N150 is very similar to RL15.

The .375H&H work splendid on cape buffalo..penetrate well and give good results as long as bullet placement is good and you use premium bullets..ie Swift A-frame.. All is well..until things go south and you get a charge, either because your shot(s) did not kill or you get an unprovoked...

The one in the middle, Joseph Lang boxlock, PHV-1 action and 28" barrels, .450/400 3.25NE from 1906. It regulates at 30mm with original Kynoch ammo at 50 yards. Scaled down action, very handy..

Very good ammunition this, but frightfully expensive.. One-1 .470NE cartridge is US$38 in Norway :oops: That is highway robbery.. BTW, Norma PH line always used Woodleigh soft and solid bullets.

I can vouch for Rhino solids (flat tipped brass bullets) in .375H&H, shot 2 elephant with them in handloads, they penetrate like crazy.. Never used their expanding bullets but I have heared lots of praise for them..

I chose my .470 double for buff, one bull and a cow.. Will use same rifle this summer for more buff. My rifle (Krieghoff) is scoped with a Leupold red dot scope..makes for quick shots.. I shot a big old bull at some 25m with Hornady DGX bonded through both lungs...never walked a step.. .470...

From experience, shooting a Holland & Holland Royal .600 ejector belonging to a friend was quite fun.. It is properly weighed (16lbs 2 oz.) and well balanced.. heavy recoil but not so fast. We shot Kynamco full power ammo (aka 110 grain cordite), cronoed at 1900fps from 26" barrels. Original...

Basically guns are tools..but when you venture into high class firearms they become art.

Personally I found a .600 Holland & Holland at 16lbs 2oz. quite ok to shoot with full power ammo aka 110 grain cordite. But Lord is it heavy to carry..
