Need help choosing between 2 calibers

In Zimbabwe, I don't think you will find PRC or even very many 6.5 creedmoor. In addition, searching websites for availability in South Africa is dodgy, they put stock on the website but may not have. 30-06 and 300 win mag is readily available in zim. 308 probably most common. I am really...

I KNOW IT IS OVERKILL BUT WHAT BULLET AND WEIGHT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IN .458 WIN MAG FOR LEOPARD?

300 win mag is better than a 30-06. And as Philip Glass suggests, a soft bullet is best. Scirocco would be good- very soft and bonded. I would think a round nose bonded soft would probably be best but I don't believe anyone makes one. I think the berger and eldx are long range bullets and not...

I KNOW IT IS OVERKILL BUT WHAT BULLET AND WEIGHT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IN .458 WIN MAG FOR LEOPARD?

I would advise a rifle with more velocity for your leopard. Cats are susceptible to velocity- 300 win mag is great. They are thin skinned and light boned and a high velocity bullet seems to have more effect and a rapid expansion bullet is needed as they are not wide animal through the rib cage...

Where on the rib to mount a red dot

I have only used a red dot once (RMR) at the range. I found it totally intuitive, I did not think about anything except looking at the target and putting the dot on target. I hear you though - what is the best distance from the eye. In addition, a 1 moa dot will be smaller if the sight is...

I need a "Use Enough Gun" Gun. Suggestions?

One more vote for the 375 h&h. A weatherby generally pushes lead core bullets pretty hard and your failure rate climbs. If you really want a bigger calibre then 416 or 458 are better options. Bigger hole. Always remember shot placement is paramount. I have watched a buffalo shot with a 378...

Where on the rib to mount a red dot

I have thought about this very question for a while. I have normal open sights but at 47, the day is approaching when I think a red dot will be the best option. My thoughts are that you focus on the target and the dot is superimposed by your brain, you don't conciously focus on the dot and...

    My next stock refinishing project

I would rub the finished down with sandpaper wrapped around a block between coats. You can use 400 or 600 grit and always with the grain. That flattens the finish and smooths any ripples or high spots before the next coat. You end up with a much better quality finish whether satin or glossy.

.470 N.E. Bullet Test By Bullet Safaris

If you shot the Hornady bullet from a 458 win mag topped with a vortex scope, you would have named the unholy trinity of clickbait. Personally I would only use a Blaser 500 jeff topped with a swarovski to shoot charging bags of pool sand. Most of Kentucky ballistics videos are more...

    Ideal/preferred cartridge on species

30-06 for everything up to Kudu and a 458 Lott for the rest. Only other rifle I have is a 22 lr. I would say a 375 h&h is probably ideal for the Eland but I couldn't be bothered with another rifle so close to the 458

550 grain North Fork SS in .458 Lott

I think a 550 gr soft point in the Lott is a bit of a stretch. I have heard good things about the 550 gr Woodleigh solid at 2150 fps. A 500 gr soft at 2300 fps is more than enough. You need a reasonable velocity to ensure expansion and penetration. I think a 550 gr soft may end up being...

On game performance with the .375 H&H - 250g TTSX vs 300 TSX

If you look at the trajectories of the 2 bullet weights, the 250 gr only gets the advantage around 250 m or more. So, you run out of range and need a rangefinder and holdover or dialing your scope around there because the bullet drop starts to get pretty significant around the same range. I...

    458 Win vs 460 Weatherby

I think the 460 weatherby handloaded to a usable level is great.-no brake.Full power is unpleasant. I have a 458 lott at around 10 lbs and use win mag ammo if I need to. I cannot tell the difference between a 2150 fps 450 gr and and a 2200 fps 500gr in recoil. But I have fired a 515 gr at 2350...

Anyone built .375 or .416 Ruger on a Model 70

As I understand, the follower effects the last round feeding. Generally the feed lips of the reciever and the stack angles of the cartridge + diameter of cartridge control the rest. A bigger diameter cartridge will need a wider magazine box to stop from popping up. You can use the mauser formula...

    450 or 500 grain bullet for a .458 Lott?

I am using 500 gr Peregrine copper soft points and 500 gr Peregrine solids, both at 2195 fps. I have loaded Hornady DGS 500 gr and used the 480 gr DGS in win mag. My personal belief is that things tend to go wrong when you push boundaries- both upper and lower boundaries. Too fast or too slow...

How to Select a Soft/Solid Combo

I am using Peregrine bullets from South Africa. They have the same profile and weight. Otherwise you can use the same manufacturer eg Hornady DGS and DGX, which are pretty similar in impact Point. Generally you would only use solids on elephant and that would be at under 50 m. So you can also...

    .375 H&H copper ammo?

Tsx will work fine. Trophy bonded and A frame are a little softer and better on the lighter animals moose and bears( as compared to buffalo !) Also you are using a relatively large calibre for the job at hand. I figure that with a copper soft, the worst it can do is not open. So you have a big...

Carl Zeiss stops scope and binoc production 2026

If you look at the market, there are not many hunting scopes left- by that I mean lower mag, light and small optics. Most are long range and fairly high magnification target scopes. Looking for more reach then my .375 ..options?

The long range craze is all built around heavy for calibre bullets. The new calibres (creedmore, rum etc) are designed to push heavy for calibre High bc bullets. So downgrading your 300 gr to lighter bullets is poor science. Buy a range finder because bullets drop is quantifiable. Then use mils...

I would question the logic of your marketing. With all due respect, Chapuis is not competing with the like of Purdey or Holland and Holland. In my opinion it does not compete with Heym. Single shot 458wm vs lott

You are correct if you use bullets with multiple crimp grooves. I have a CX 550 win mag reamed out to Lott. Copper or brass bullets with driving bands can easily be loaded longer, you just use a driving band further back. If you were hunting DG I would advise a good crimp and make sure the...

Help and Advice from 9.3x62 Users

Lead core bullets work better at lower velocity and are better suited to the 9.3. I think the Swift bullet works great but Interbond and Interlock are fine too. If you had a 378 weatherly, then I would say aframe all the way and maybe even the ttsx.

The longer throat also allows you to seat bullets further out. So I bought a 458, with a 20 inch barrel today....

My Lott is 9.5 lbs without a scope and is a pleasure to shoot. I think good balance has a lot to do with recoil. Front heavy and tail heavy and they spin up and smack you in the chops. I just added about a pound of lead in the butt under the recoil pad. I melted it into a couple of old 458...

416 Rigby loads with Northfork CUP points, how hot is hot enough?

I am not a great fan of pushing the boundaries of a cartridge. In the heat of the african sun, loads can increase in pressure and you have a stuck case. Bullets can also fail at higher velocity. Also you can start to get overpenetration ie bullets exiting on elephant and softs exiting on...
