    Elephant Bow Hunt

Take a read at this thread, if you haven't already: https://www.africahunting.com/threads/finally-getting-a-shot-at-an-elephant-with-a-bow.91341/ As many have said, securing a permit to legally hunt one with a bow is limited.

What order did you complete your big 5 in and why?

Buffalo in 2017 in RSA. I'll do more someday. Elephant in 2023 in Zim. Croc in 2025 in Zambia. Hippo in 2025 in Zambia. Leopard (hopefully) in 2027 in Zim. Rhino in prelim plans for 2028 in RSA for a dart. Lion's going to be a budget stretcher with two kids entering the prime of their activity...

Cutting Heym Martini Barrel To 22""

An honest question: if one spec'd the rifle with a 22" barrel on order, would they deliver as asked? Or is 24" their only option?

Best flashlight thread (or, "torch" if you are from Southern Africa)

I've had great luck with Fenix lights, but have made a nearly full conversion to headlamps for field-work. USB-C rechargable and a few battery packs are a must on every hunt.

Zambia - Luangwa Valley. Which GMA's have experienced heavy poaching?

Johnny's great to hunt with and Upper Lupande has excellent hunting. You'll see great buffalo there, and puku, Cookson's wildebeest, and kudu will all be on the menu there. We saw some great waterbuck, also. If the small stuff is on your list, we saw a TON of Sharpe grysbok.

Fantastic hunt. Thank you for sharing and congratulations. It's unfortunate Western Africa has dwindled in hunting opportunities due to violence.

    Which first aid kit?

Kit is important, but the training to recognize the severity of an injury and how to employ the tools in your kit is even more important. Many items can be improvised if you understand the mechanics behind the treatment, but knowledge is tough to improvise even if you have the right tools. The...

Looking for load data for 350gr Woodleigh PP in a 375 H&H

I had some correspondence with Geoff from Woodleigh in 2016 when I was preparing for my first cape buffalo hunt and used the 350gr PP's. He provided IMR4350 between 68 and 70gr with expected velocities of 2225 and 2325fps. I used 69.5gr of IMR4350 and experienced fantastic sub-MOA accuracy with it.

    Reproduction tusks

I had a set made by TCI in Bulawayo from my 2023 bull. The detail is excellent when comparing them to my photos. One thing I was mildly upset about was I wanted to maintain a defect on the tusk near the base that was presumably caused by small caliber bullet. They did a great job copying the Zim...

What knife are you carrying everyday right now?

Gene Ingram F1 folder in S30V with coconut husk micarta handles for almost 10 years. Super light and disappears in almost any pocket. I've oodles of knives, and have been on the hunt for a new one for a while. I'd love a Spyderco Dragonfly again, preferably in one of the new premium steels...

    New to reloading belted magnums…

I bump the shoulder back on practice (more than 1x fired) brass and essentially ignore the belt. Brass used on hunts is always new, so I don't have real concerns about bulges in front of the belt. I have had to use the Willis resizing die on a few pieces of practice brass over the years (prob...

Gun cases - 1 for 2 rifles or take 2 for 2 rifles when traveling/Africa

Two guns in one case for me. Moving around the airport with a single gun case, plus checked bag, plus backpack is hassle enough for me. What did you reload today?

Loaded up second stage loads of 300 Win mag to test 180gr Woodleigh PP's over RL22 (which I'm down under 4lbs of, sadly), and a comparative load with 180gr Swift A-Frames. Also loaded some .375 H&H in 300gr Woodleigh PP's and 300gr Swift A-Frames, both over RL15. Ordered 22 Hornet dies...

Do you have your ideal rifle or are you still looking for it?

I'm relatively sure I've the "perfect" all around safari rifle in an AHR upgraded CZ550 in .375 H&H, topped with a Swarovski Z6i 1-6EE scope. It's digested numerous loads from 250-350gr with great accuracy and not much fuss on load workup. It's comfortable to shoot and pleasant to look at. The...

Ruger m77 rsm vs Dakota arms vs heym bolt actions

Not an easy call, here. I've handled a few of the RSMs, and have two 77 Hawkeyes with the same safety. I always felt the safety in the full rear position (bolt and trigger blocked) sat too close to the shroud and wasn't as easy to blindly "grab" with a thumb as the Winchester style is. I've...

I feel the two of you on the fruit front. Two kids of our own and 5 more nieces and nephews over frequently, plus friends from the neighborhood results in 6-10qts of berries and 4-5 gal of milk per week in our house. .30 cal solids for tiny ten types?
