@Charlie64 , what scope were you using on the rifle ? I have an old Diavari-C 3-9x36 on mine. A tad too big for driven. So I’m thinking of putting my Meopta R2, 1,7-10x42 on. Otherwise it’s a matter of taking a Duralyt 1,2-5x36 off my 375 and the pain of rezeroing.
A lot of people will gawk at the buffalo after the shot. The PH’s job is to keep the client alive and bring a successful conclusion to events. A double rifle with an empty barrel is now a single shot. If things go pear shaped you’d be glad of the instruction.
Quad sticks are initially a bit difficult to deploy and use. However once you get used to them they’re a game changer. My ViperFlex Journey sticks accompany me every time I go hunting. They’ve enabled me to take shots on occasions and distances that previously I would have had to pass on.
If they tell you to shoot the wrong animal that is out of your budget that’s their problem. The fellow that you are hunting with is called the PH, Professional Hunter.
I hunted with @BAYLY SIPPEL SAFARIS this year for 3 buffalo cows on a government reserve. It was 5 great days of hunting topped off with great cooking by Tucker, aptly named, the chef.
The hunting was exciting and up close. When you can smell the buffalo you know you are on their doorstep ...
This same scenario has happened to me also. And I’ve wondered . One guy I’ve hunted with a couple of times takes a very modest tip for his staff. I generally go with a couple of friends so we fill the small camp.
Anyway on departure day he calls the staff around, puts the money on the table...
I hunted with @GAME 4 AFRICA SAFARIS last year. Top notch outfit that plenty of the members here have visited and thoroughly enjoyed. You won’t go wrong.
I just think it’s a bad thing to put anything of value in your checked luggage traveling through Africa. I have, after several trips, become minimalist about my luggage .
In reality if you have daily laundry you can pretty much get away with a carryon backpack. A few trips ago I hung all my...
@CBH Australia , in post 10 you’ve nearly answered your own dilemma. You already have a 375 and kinda fancy a 416. But as you admit it (416) will get minimal use. Look at the price of 416 ammunition !
I have a 375H&H also, loaded with 235 grain bullets it’s capable of taking any plains game...
You’ve made a good choice choosing Game 4 Africa to hunt with. Wik is a very competent man to hunt with. Go on a diet before you visit. The food is too good.
Anything by Ron Thomson is a great read on hunting in Africa. The books are available on Kindle to purchase and download.
That is a seriously good offer which is very tempting. As there is an arms embargo in Europe that forbids the import of firearms into Zimbabwe with serious consequences of fines and or imprisonment I would ask “What is the camp rifle “ ?
This stuff. Thorroclean.applied correctly it does an amazing job. Correctly ? You have to really shake the cleaner part to get it all dissolved in the medium.
I’ve shot a few blue wildebeest and eland with my 7x57/275. The eland was injured and it was a mercy killing. It would not be my caliber of choice for eland. However the wildebeest folded up without too much drama. 175 grain Nosler Partitions are my African bullet.
I had a good time this past June doing pretty much that with @BAYLY SIPPEL SAFARIS after 3 cows. It was great hunting and we got very close to herds in the bush.
There’s a number of 6.5 Norma Oryx bullets I recovered from deer I shot some years ago using a 6.5x55. Excellent deformation and weight retention. I’ve used them in several calibers and have never had any problems with performance.
I totally agree with you. I’ve been wearing merino wool base layers and socks for a good number of years now. I’ve added some woolen trousers and shirts to the outfits for the winter.
I picked up an old book today. “Big game and big game rifles” by John”Pondoro” Taylor. Small money on eBay.
I opened the cover to find some history that made me smile. Bought in 1954 so the same age as myself (old bugger).
What became of Mr. C.A. Johnson of Gokwe, S. Rhodesia ? Did he buy it...
