Epilogue
Our trip home was mostly uneventful, but long. I did create a delay for us while transferring through DIA. Be sure not to accidentally leave a couple of fired cases in your checked bag. It may draw questions from customs (who I have to say were very understanding and kind).
This...
The Swift A-frame performed very well, but wasn't recovered. My shot had been through the front of the shoulder and passed through. I'm not sure if I misread the lines of the shoulder or pulled right just a little. However, the bullet caught both lungs so basically a one-shot kill, with one...
Hunting Day 10 (Buffalo Day 7)
I refused to call it our last day, instead calling it Day 1...of the rest of our safari. After all, today was as good a day as any to kill a buffalo. Marius and I had talked for a couple of days how close we had come and that we just needed some luck. Marius...
Hunting Day 8 (Buffalo Day 5)
Another early morning and we were on the road well before daylight. The hunting today would be much different than the days prior. It was similar in size to the second property, but the layout would require us to cover more of it on foot than we had any of the...
Hunting Day 6 (Buffalo Day 3)
Our Safari was half-over and while I had taken three nice animals; still no buffalo. Marius had arranged for us to hunt a new location with the hope of better luck. This was also a camp he had not previously hunted buffalo on but he was hearing good things about...
Unfortunately, no. I couldn't have gotten a good picture from where I was, but didn't even think about it in the moment. After we got back to the bakkie Marius said the same thing, "I should have taken a picture of that bull."
Hunting Day 5
We didn't hunt buffalo this day. We had learned the day prior that we wouldn't have access to the same property so we made a plan to travel to a different location and continue plains game hunting for hartebeest. We left before daylight and were awarded with seeing a bat-eared...
Hunting Day 3 (Buffalo Day 1)
In the days leading up to this hunt Marius and I were in regular communication. He had shared we would be hunting a property he had only recently gained access to, and it was huge - 60,000 acres and believed to be occupied by approximately 600 buffalo. He...
Hunting Day 2
This day we were after Nyala and left earlier than the day before as we were traveling to a property further away. The property was lightly hunted and known to have some nice bulls. We spent the morning driving to different vantage points and glassing. We saw a total of seven...
After three years of planning, a year of COVID uncertainty, and six months of truly not knowing if it was going to happen; my daughter and I headed back to the Eastern Cape to hunt with @KMG Hunting Safaris. Much as been written about the COVID testing process and current-state travel...
Is there a specific reason you want them done close to home? You will broaden your opportunity for quality work if you can live with a longer drive, or the cost of delivery.
I had that happen also. Bought two bottles of water and two Diet Cokes in the Doha airport only to have to throw them away when going through pre-boarding security. My daughter had also bought a sandwich - the food was allowed, liquids were not even though they were unopened. Lessons learned :).
Lesson learned for me. I paid extra for exit row seating in Economy. With the baggage fees I also paid I was probably close to paying for Business which is what I would do if repeating the trip.
No, rifle case and ammo case was checked to and collected/rechecked in Joberg, but my suitcase (clothes/gear) was checked all the way to DFW so I did not take possession of it in Joberg - so no opportunity to put my ammo in my suitcase which I am guessing would have saved some on the extra...
Honestly I am not sure. I had a Pelican double rifle case and a small hard case for ammo. I think it was simply as extra bags - total of R7000-ish ($495 USD). It's the first time I have ever had to pay other than the "handling" fees on RSA in-country flights (think Airlink, Safair). Because...
Like many, I only knew Lori by way of the three safaris for which she arranged travel - the third of which I am currently enjoying. We spoke now and then and exchanged many emails during the past seven years. I will miss her partnership greatly and I send my most fervent prayers for her family...
I'm no help, built a trophy room that doubles as a rec room/extra space to hang out. I enjoy having the mounts available - I get to visit Africa every day this way.
My daughter and I were booked June 6 on Delta, ATL to JNB and that has been cancelled. Lori @ Travel Express is working on a refund and rebooking on Qatar. Seems like Delta is giving less and less lead times on these cancellations. Fingers crossed that we are able to stay on schedule.
I'm booked June 6th from ATL to JNB on Delta. Either I will be incredibly travel-lucky for the first time...ever, or my flight will get canned in the next week. Nothing to do but wait and see, then evaluate options.
Grew up calling them Mountain Lions, but I hear Cougar just as often. Puma, Panther far less often. I've heard they call them Red Tigers in parts of Mexico??
Kentucky (but Dad and I both hunted them in Utah)
