    Elephant caliber

I would just stick with the .45WM. I’ve owned 5 of them (hoping to be 6 real soon) and have never had a problem achieving the promised velocity with any of them. I have personally achieved 2100fps with the 550gn Woodleigh, 2150fps with the 500gn Woodleigh, 2150fps with the 480gn Woodleigh and...

    338 Win Questions

Remember Bob, If @CoElkHunter were to load up his .33WM like you Whelen boys load up your .35s, it absolutely WOULD be doing something your Whelen's don't... Sorry mate, but case capacity and higher working pressure do mean something... and the .338 has the edge on both counts over the Whelen...

22 or 6.5 Creedmore for Moose and Elk?

In my opinion the trend to smaller and smaller cartridges for big game is because of better bullet technology – and I have no problem with that, to an extent. I have a young son who's 12 and is about to start deer hunting with me, and the number 1 consideration for me when choosing a rifle was...

    Redfield scopes

Hi. Just wanted to post something about my recent experience I had with a Redfield scope. It is a Redfield Revolution 2-7x33, and it is fitted to my 425 Express. A bit of a backstory... I originally had a Leupold VX-2 1-4x scope on my 425 and it was a really good, dependable scope. Clear...

Hornady interlock, have you used it on anything?

Hi Bob, Yeah, that's why I chose them – they were the only .312" projectiles I could get. Was really after 180s but couldn't find any... but really happy with these; they shot great. (y) Russ

    338 Win Questions

I had a Winchester M70 Synthetic Matte in .338WM and that had a 26" barrel, and not once did I find it unwieldy or clumsy – even in the thick stuff while hunting Sambar. The only problem with my barrel was it was magnaported, and I still swear to this day that is the reason that it shot slower...

    338 Win Questions

Hi. I've owned a couple of .338WMs and I really like the cartridge. Both of my .338s have been Winchester M70s, one CRF and one pushfeed, and both rifles performed flawlessly... Personally, I'd want a longer barrel than 19". 22" would be the minimum, but I would really prefer 24", but that's...

    21 days with Mark Sullivan

I agree. I've never hunted Africa and have never met Mark Sullivan, but I've read enough on here to get an idea what my hunt would look like. And if I were happy with that, I'd hunt with him. If not, I wouldn't. But from what I've also gathered on here, he seems a nice enough guy – and I've...

How to define a bad hunt?

I define a bad hunt probably in a few ways... When I've hunted bad... By that I mean when I haven't followed the rules I've set myself and haven't hunted the way I have planned. An example would be not setting a landmark every 50m or so and, when reaching that landmark, checking my compass to...

Hornady interlock, have you used it on anything?

Glad I stumbled upon this thread; I'm planning a Fallow deer hunt and am using my .303 British loaded with the 150gn Interlock at a sedate 2450fps. After reading this I have every confidence it will do a great job. (y) Russ

    Power-Point / Core-Lokt bullets in Africa?

Hey, Who has used standard bullets like Winchester Power-Point or Remington Core-Lokt in Africa? How did they go? Now c'mon guys, before the barrage of replies saying, "Why would someone skimp on a non-premium bullet when going to Africa?" Or "The bullet is the least expensive but most...

What are your thoughts on the following rifles?

Are Nosler Partitions still worth the money?

All good mate. (y) It certainly has been interesting hearing people's opinions/experiences with the Partitions. I'm not worrying about the dollar – if I were, I wouldn't be buying Atomic29 projectiles for my 425 Express; I'd be buying the less expensive Bertram projectiles instead. And when I wrote... " So I guess my question is... if you were me, would you ever choose the Nosler Partition over other...

Hi. As the title says, do you think that Nosler Partitions are still worth the money? I haven't asked this question to stir the pot, upset anyone or cause arguments. I've asked this question because with all the more modern premium projectiles available, are they still worth the price? I...

Weatherby bolt rifles love them or hate them?

Yeah, I reckon it would have... The heaviest recoiling rifle I've ever fired was a Zastava M70 in .458WM with a Hogue stock firing the 550gn Woodleigh at 2100fps. Punching in all the info on a ballistic calculator, it came back as having a little more than 80ft/lbs of recoil. But having...

    .338 Remington Ultra Mag

I reckon loaded with the right projectile for the job, most people wouldn't have a problem shooting any game with a .338 RUM – including dangerous game. A 300gn .338 projectile has a SD of 0.375 and can be launched at 2600fps for 4500fpe. With a suitable projectile, I would use it on buffalo. Russ

    470 NE Crimp or Not

I always crimp, not just with the .458's and 425's but with my .303 British and .243 too. When I reload, crimping with a Lee Factory Crimp Die is just part of the process... Not only does it help the bullet stay put on heavy-recoiling rifles, but I believe it helps accuracy and consistency too...

    Ugliest Rifle

For me personally when it comes to looks, I'm in the less-is-more camp. I like plainness in rifles... I like a classic shape but don't need anything fancy added... For example, I really liked the looks of the Winchester M70 'Ranger' when it came out years ago. It's a classic shape but plain...
