Interesting concept that I had not fully considered for 450/400 3”. Hmmm … Dacron as a filler? Wonder how to test the concept. My powder charge is well below H4350 max but shooting sub-MOA so I’d like to keep the load but improve the bulging primer issue.
Really sorry to hear this news - two of us booked Ethiopian Airlines through Gracy Travel, departing IAD through ADD to JNB with guns on May 19. Gracy has made no mention of the ADD issues described here, any special security concerns, no alert that the guns need to be checked at ADD baggage...
OH - can you please explain your experience and the concept of going up on powder if primers are pushing out? I’m seeing some of that in my 450/400 3” loads and have been wondering what’s going on, and how to fix it. Thanks in advance.
I’m currently loading 400 grain Safari Solids from Cutting Edge over H4350. I’m also loading their 370 grain Safari Raptors, also over H4350. Both for a Ruger No. 1 in 450/400 3”, aka 400 Jeff. Cutting Edge has good load data for any number of powders for their .409 NE bullets (.409 is the...
I’ve found them to be unobtanium. I’ve gone the Hornady factory route and fired those for practice to get brass to reload. Not ideal but the only option I’ve found atm.
+1! I use Timeshifter regularly and it really helps simplify things. Full disclosure, I get it about 85-90% right, hard to 100% comply with its suggestions.
Based on my personal experience:
404 Jeff for Buff and Zebra (Zebra maxes out a 300 WM with 180 gr Accubond). Kudu as well.
358 Norma is likely overkill for anything lighter than Zebra but would work well on zebra and kudu. Too small for buff. Makes it a bit of an outlier.
7x57 great for...
Silencer 4457 signed at IAD and in hand. No mention of any issue or conflict. Maybe I’m having good luck. Sorry to hear of the troubles out there … frustrating.
Leupold VX6HD 1-6x24. Works perfectly for .375 in Africa and is great value for money.
300 WM would wear more magnification but not needed in .375 imho.
MRI (Most Recent Information) on 5320.20 -
I filled out 5320.20 by hand, in pen, making sure to be careful and specific with my information. I left box 10 blank but used the term “personal use” for box 6, “personal conveyance” for box 9 and my airport (IAD) for both box 11 and 12.
I scanned...
We use Wessner’s Taxidermy in PA. They highly recommend Swift Dip for trophy collection and dip/pack services.
I’m coming up on 2 years waiting for Splitting Image to send my trophies to me - too long imho. I’ll follow Wessner’s advice next time.
This May we are chasing buff in SA. Our reputable PH’s will not let us bring DGX/DGS due to poor on-game performance. They recommend TSX or AFrames. YMMV but that’s what we’re being told.
Clear copy - for clarity, by “expire” I mean that the 4457 I had filled out about 4 years ago had “valid through (date)” printed in the top right corner so technically expired. I don’t recall the exact “valid through” date. This is the form BWI CBP agents were bothered by. Current 4457 does...
+1! Works great for me as well. I’m a no-sling on safari guy, gets in the way when getting on the sticks. Africa carry plus the belt shotgun rest gets it done with .416’s, .375’s, 300 WM’s and 450/400 3” NE.
Hmmmm … interesting.
I’ve never heard about the 4457 needing to be dated in the same year that you travel into SA. We use Gracy Travel and it’s nowhere in their documentation. Maybe we haven’t had issues because I keep taking different guns and getting new 4457’s a couple of months ahead of...
Virginia opens next Saturday - can’t wait! Added some Amazon light weight leafy full Ghili suit 2 years ago and along with TSS shot it’s a game changer.
Leave Number box at the top blank.
Leave Port box blank - that’s for the CBP officer to fill in when they are signing the form.
Leave the Date box blank - that’s for the CBP officer to fill in when they sign the form.
IMPORTANT: make sure you are using the current 4457 that does NOT have an...
Desert Dog on YouTube has a great video on the history of M70’s. Not SN specific but good timeline on when various models were produced and from where. Looks like others have answered SN dates.
Recent Information … 375 Ruger brass is currently “unobtanium” as in none to be found. 1x fired on GB is going for $3/piece. The only real option today is to buy Hornady factory and reload your own 1x/fireds - our PH’s are adamant that Hornady DG bullets are NOT recommended. The round is...
That’s really awesome. I love to see direct conservation efforts … my dad used to say “the best way to make a small fortune in ranching is to start with a large one.” Looking forward to progress reports!
Swaro EL 10x42… if buying new today I would get a pair with built-in range finder. No matter the model or power, IMHO there is no better glass than Swaro. YMMV. One other thing is to ditch the Kuiu or similar bino pouch we use here in NA and that have become a bit of the fashion. Very loud...
2009 911 Turbo coupe (997.2) with manual 6-speed transmission. One of only 50 imported that year so a bit of a unicorn in the Turbo world. 2009 was also the last year of the legendary Mezger block, hence the vanity plate.
No Barnes experience on plains game (they make a killer muzzleloader bullet tho!). In my experience, 300 WM for sure with 180 grain Swift Scirocco II bullets. They seem to be a bit harder than Accubonds and punch a hole clean through plains game of various sizes from duiker to zebra (about...
As a new member I expect to be viewed with some suspicion in transactions involving money. My sense is I need to build up a little trust by sharing experiences and commenting on things I know something about, building relationships as they come along. It’s too bad those a$$holes scammed you...
I ran both a .375 bolt action of my own making (REM 700 platform) and a Model 70 in .416 two years ago in Africa (buff, zebra, others). Picked up a lightly-used Ruger No 1 in 450/400 3” NE for this May’s DG Safari. Rifle scoped with a Leupold VX6HD 1-6 and low Alaska Arms left-side QR scope...
Eastern Cape 2021 with Blaauwkrantz. Left 50 1/4”, right 48 3/4”, right and left bases 9 6/8”. Was SCI top 100 at the time (about number 96), now surpassed.
