    RIP Oom Mauritz Coetzee

Mauritz was a great man, always helpful. His passing is a big loss to the SA hunting community. RIP Mauritz.

    Ruger #1 .375 H & H

    Yes, I have a VX3 2.5-8X on my Ruger no1 in 375 H&H. They're wonderful rifles!

    help me decide between scopes

I have a VX3 2.5-8 x 36 on my Ruger no 1 375 H&H. I'm delighted with the flexibility it gives me on plains game & in the bushveld. When I'm hunting in an area where shooting distances are likely to be <150m or so, I prefer a 300g Rhino at around 2350fps. For more open country I use a 200g GS...

    Genocide in South Africa

I'm with Bushwack - I'm not going anywhere. Africa is where my heart is. Yes, SA is an extremely violent society - we have the highest murder & rape stats of any place that collects them. Corruption & incompetence are huge issues. But the bottom line is you either leave or stay. The same was...

    8x57 Mauser Cartridge query

Red Leg is spot on. First step is to determine whether it is the J or JS model. You would be ill advised to fire 8x57JS ammo in the J (7.9) barrel.

SOUTH AFRICA: Bos en Dal Safaris

Nice trophies! Like the bushbuck. Good wildebeest. Interestingly, a friend of mine farms cattle near Koster. Good country. Hope you get that Eland next time around!

    Knifes and such

That sounds like a great idea. Also consider some of the local hardwoods for handles - we have some beautiful stuff. Wild olive is particularly special. Warthog hide is fairly thin so the sheath will need to be laminated, I'd imagine. But we have a thriving group of knife makers in SA producing...

Getting a case of the Yips

Generally when this happens to me I'll pick up the 22LR & shoot it for a while. Sometimes the first few shots with the 22LR make you realize just how much you're flinching. But it soon settles down & you can start shooting the heavier calibres again.

    270 herlaai data

Hi DH. I use a 270 Win as well but have settled on 150g bullets. I used 140g many years ago but no longer have the reloading data. Actually, reloading data for 140g bullets with Somchem powders was unavailable at the time - I interpolated between the 130 & 150g loads to come up with a 140g load...

    25-06 AI

I agree with Phoenix Phil, a 375H&H is a great way to go. And I think 250g bullets for non dangerous game is pretty much spot on. The 25-06 is a great calibre & you're clearly highly competent with it but - IMHO - it may be better to go with a heavier calibre for gemsbuck & blue wildebeest...
