Appropriate Size Target for Practice off Sticks

My plan is very similar except using a .17 HMR instead of a .22. I already own a pretty accurate .17 that I have taken prairie dogs out to 200 yards with. My .22 is a semi auto with less than stellar accuracy. Getting an R8 that I will get a .223 barrel for practice and some varmint shooting

Appropriate Size Target for Practice off Sticks

Been dry firing off shooting sticks for awhile. Got my steel target range set up this weekend and shot off the sticks for real the first time this evening. Just using my .17 HMR to start. Thoughts on the appropriate size steel target for practicing for an Africa hunt? I have mainly 6 inch round...

    Your shooting range

Just a homemade setup for me. Steel gongs (mainly 6 inch with a couple 8 and 10 inchers) spaced 50 yards apart. Distance is based on where we set up to shoot. Can shoot up to 500ish

    Blaser R8 in .375 H&H Magnum

Leopard will be on the menu. I currently have a z6 3-18x50. I was thinking of putting that on a .300 win mag barrel for leopard, croc and/or for pure plains game if I already have the buffalo. Or leave it on my .30-06 M70 and bring that as a second rifle.

    Blaser R8 in .375 H&H Magnum

I am leaning towards the Swaro z8(i) 1-8x24 for the Blaser .375. Seems well regarded on this forum for what I would be using it for. Low power for close stuff with enough magnification for plains game I might encounter within my comfortable shooting range (couple hundred yards). Other option I...

    Blaser R8 in .375 H&H Magnum

Nice looking gun. My natural inclination is towards wood, especially for this first safari. Wood seems more appropriate. However I am thinking long and hard about a synthetic thumbhole

    Blaser R8 in .375 H&H Magnum

I am sure I am overthinking the recoil of the .375. I have shot thousands of 3 and 3.5 inch 12 gauge loads over the years without issue. Although I don’t shoot the 3.5s anymore. In any event, I will have to make it happen because it is the minimum caliber for buffalo where we are going!

    Blaser R8 in .375 H&H Magnum

Thanks guys. Good info. Sounds like standard contour is the way to go. I am leaning to a professional success with the recoil reducer or the ultimate with the adjustable comb and recoil reduction system. Tra3 is your son’s gun noticeably butt heavy with the recoil reducer?

    Blaser R8 in .375 H&H Magnum

I am considering a Blaser R8 in .375 H&H Magnum (with a .223 for more practice). I have never shot that heavy of a caliber rifle. A .300 wing mag is biggest I have shot and didn’t particularly care for it. My regular deer gun is a .30-06 in a Winchester m70. Perfectly comfortable to me. my...

    Hello from Zimbabwe

How does the hunting work for a resident in Zimbabwe? Is there “public” land you can hunt? Do you go through an outfitter? Is there private hunting land?

TANZANIA: Has Anyone Hunted With Michel Mantheakis Safaris?

The detailed research on this is pretty new to me. One thing I learned quickly though is that there is no “poor man” dangerous game! Another thing I learned is going anywhere in Africa to hunt is a privilege that in the grand scheme of things only a very few get to experience

TANZANIA: Has Anyone Hunted With Michel Mantheakis Safaris?

Boy I would love to! Really more an issue of time. I don’t think everyone can be away that long.

TANZANIA: Has Anyone Hunted With Michel Mantheakis Safaris?

What originally started as a 7-10 day plains game hunt has taken on a life of its own. It has morphed more into a 14-16 day buffalo/croc/possibly leopard/PG hunt. Scope creep

TANZANIA: Has Anyone Hunted With Michel Mantheakis Safaris?

Has anyone hunted with Michel Mantheakis Safaris in Tanzania? I am not finding a lot of info on them. That said, that is the case for several Tanzanian outfitters I am looking at. I think some just don’t really advertise much. From the little I have found they seem to be highly reputable and...

    Is bismuth shot worth it?

I think so. I shoot a 3inch 20 gauge load on Bismuth for all waterfowl. #5s for ducks and #3s for geese. Steel works perfectly fine too but with the bismuth I feel my 20 gauge is just as or more effective than my 12 gauge with #2 or 3 steel for ducks and BB for geese. Bismuth is better than...

TANZANIA: Has Anyone Hunted With Robin Hurt Safaris?

I have been speaking with Roger at Robin Hurt Safaris about a safari in Tanzania. Does anyone have any experience with them? From my research they seem to be a long-standing company with a good reputation. There is not much about them on this site though. Thanks Jeff

    Tanzania Recommendations

All, In my first post on these forums awhile back I said I was exploring a first Africa safari for myself and a group of friends and asked whether it made sense to go somewhere more exotic like Tanzania for a first safari largely focused on plainsgame. I appreciate the responses and private...

Recommendations for overnight FAD fishing in Costa Rica

Sounds like you need to go for 3 weeks and hit Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama . Panama is without question the place for blacks from what I know (which ain’t much). We had 3 blacks in the spread at the same time one afternoon. Hooked a double and the 3rd one swung and missed. Had to just cut...

Recommendations for overnight FAD fishing in Costa Rica

I have fished out of quepos in Costa Rica. Just sails and tuna. I have not done the marlin trip out to the seamounts. Have been looking at it hard. That Feb trip i referenced was to tropic star in Panama.

Recommendations for overnight FAD fishing in Costa Rica

That is a pretty good time for blue marlin at Tropic Star in Panama. I have been to Tropic Star but have not been on a trip to the FADs in Costa Rica (but want to). You won’t get near the numbers at Tropic Star (couple shots a day with other fish mixed in) as Costa Rica FADs but much bigger...

    Which Country

Thanks. I understand Tanzania is much more expensive and my understanding it typically is dangerous game or more advanced safari. I am trying to get the sense of whether you get what you pay for and would get better hunting or hunting experience in Tanzania. If you won the powerball and could go...

    Which Country

Appreciate all the responses so far. Let me rephrase my question slightly. Is it worth it for a first time plains game hunt to go somewhere like Tanzania or Mozambique over the more typical Namibia or South Africa trip? Putting aside cost and logistics does anyone think the hunting or hunting...

    Which Country

Looking at a first Africa safari. We would be interested in targeting a wide range of plains game with the opportunity to take a couple of the “marquee” plains game species (e.g., Kudu, Eland, Gemsbok, Sable, etc). My research is generally indicating Namibia or South Africa for a first safari...
