Love the African nostalgia of the 7x57! (0wn 4)
And the history of the 30-06 (own 5)
the 308 never caught on with me (own 1 M1A)
At the end of the day, it is the 30-06, hands down.
When that 220 grain RN is seated in the case, downright sexy:)
Steve
Pressure data for the 160gn RN:
so you can see the max load is just above max SAAMI MAP pressure. Might lose 50fps in 24" barrel. hence the 2450fps target.
Steve
Longwalker,
In my 6.5x55, I would use H4831SCand the 160gn RN. and 2450fps
Hodgdon reloading website shows max load at 2524fps for the 160gn with a 24" barrel and energy below the CIP proof load.
The short cut reduces the load density to just at 100%, sounds good to me.
The Hornady data used an...
Gert,
Is the issue importing action to SA from USA?
Is importing from Germany any better?
Is it just the receiver with trigger guard or do you also need the complete bolt assembly?
GMA CNC their action and 100’s of toolpaths and many fixtures!
Steve
Take a look at:
A-square 416 Rigby Purchased In 1985
Back in the safe but could consider.
since a new member, I only consider bank cashier check, rifle shipped from my FFL to your FFL once check is deposited.
Bought one. Came in and “debris” was attached inside of ocular. EuroOptic was great. Instant RMA, no cost shipping and they put one aside in my name. Checked with them after the return and Chris said return dept. was behind and he immediately sent it out , I get next Monday. Can’t beat the price...
Ray,
I asked for the case measurements of the 505 brass before and after you sized to 550 per your post below:
"
Well, I blew out a 505 Gibbs and seated a .550 700 gr Hawk bullets in it. It doesn't leave much shoulder, but it looks usable
"
so we all could see how much the neck thins when...
The 550 reads 0.011
The 505 reads 0.012
but the brass needs to thin more than this.
Is the Gibbs Jamison brass? as the neck seems think.
Tube micrometer is the proper tool.
Per Wiki:
On one notable occasion, Richard "Dickie" Cooper brought down three Albatros D.IIIfighters from Ernst Udet's squadron, Jagdstaffel 15, with his Holland & Holland .450 Nitro Express big-game double rifle. Cooper is recorded as saying: "I aimed well ahead of the leader. He came down like...
Ah, a man after my own heart!. Nice rifles. Love the patina on the 7x57
In order to get the sight pic elevation about the square bridges, raised the quarter rib with extra step. Another issue is keeping the full rib just wide enough over the barrel flat but enough to get a good front sight base...
i went with a 40deg. shoulder (between the gibbs and rigby) and a slightly tapered case (about the same shoulder height as the gibbs). Case capacity was 201gn H2O. when fitted to a-square gibbs data, with a 700 gn Hawk, gives 2150fps with 24" barrel at Maximum Gibbs CIP pressure. Case wall is...
Mr. Hunter, like your humor (although am having a 416 Rigby African classic built on a B&C stock to see if a DGR can be built cost effective today)
here is the action (imported by Roger Green but alas, no longer made) Mauser clone but updated trigger and safety but went with the Mauser classic...
Barrel is a Lijia blank, Matrix Gunsmithing machines the barrel. He is on a roll, has made 9 barrels in the last 6 month.
Caliber is 9.3x62 mated to a Mayfair Mauser action.
Could be, looks like enough shoulder to headspace but unlike the 550 mag, with Weatherby case pressure is much lower.
Can gin up a design if you are interested?
Steve
Ray,
Probably someone was thinking cz 550 Gibbs conflated things.necking the Gibbs to 510 has some concerned (I am thinking about a 505 Gibbs +P)
For the 550 magnum gunsmith you might check with Tim at Matrix Gunsmithing in CO. He finished a pair early last year using cz 550 actions on cz wood...
Hope to have for Christmas present. Looked at a couple of old school rifles and came up with this blended design
pleasing to the eye but functional. The rear sight is also custom based upon Mark's "mini" express (NECG) in that it is made 0.100" narrower to better fit the quarter rib.
Steve
Aaron N, not sure if shipping quarter rib, banded sling swivel or banded front sight base from Colorado to Canada is a hassle but you might want to check with Tim at Matrix Gunsmithing as he is starting on a quarter rib kit of those 3 items (qrib mates to Mauser front ring and you can specify...
I am happy with
Frankford platinum digital scale. Easy to use and has offset (tar) for doing case capacity, etc
And then bought
Frankford Arsenal Intellidropper
And and happy with it also.
Both sit in my barn with temperatures from 20 to 80F and when i check with check weights, never off by grain.
Thought might be of interest to know can buy actions in the white from Parkwest. This happens to be a 404 Jeffery with a companion in 416 Remington, both with integral barrels.
I use AA2230 in my Dakota Lott, 2200fps from 24" barrel.
Now, if i was to use h335, this is how i go about using Quickload
First, I fit known data (in this case Hodgdon data) in QL by adjusting Burn rate factor Ba and per
QL developer, weighing factor. This allows one to match the velocity and...
I just got:

550 magnum Caliber. Can use 460 brass and I was luck that a nice gentleman here sold me 700gr cast bullets and brass which went with the rifle.
I understand the game animals do not care about the rifle or cartridge but I spend most of my time reloading and shooting and want a classic rifle that...
Velo Dog,
Nice rifle. Like the front sight hood. And unlike some, the cz euro stocks fit me and to my taste.
I have a thread here about the 550 Magnum (I designed the barrel) using a CZ action.
I do not know if it is my age or being a retired engineer but I stress out over ammo and component...
Thanks for the comments. I was thinking to take advantage of the large CZ action, hence the Rigby . 404 J works (I have one) but finding brass not as practical. 458 winmag does not fill up the action but is practical (I am a retired engineer).
Wanting to get a sense of where the folks might be on this.
Since there are a number of CZ550 magnum actions floating around, what would be the cartridge of choice?
My thinking is 416 Rigby. Nicely fits that large action, components available, lots of history in Africa.
375 HH or 416 Remington...
Sir, go to see a classic build. I design custom integral barrels and have an accurate spreadsheet for barrel weight. I used a Mauser 98 for the shank dimensions. Due to the 25.4mm diameter at the end of the transition, (G) or (B) below, quite a weighty barrel, 1.70kg or 3.7 lbs
Steve
below is...
Wow, tough question. I like the Rigby for the history
And anecdotal performance on game. Seems a bit more practical to me. On the other hand, I admire Winchester for giving us the 458! I have both.
Staggered, not sure if 2 or 3 down. Not my rifle, build by Tim at Matrix for his customer, actually was a pair, the other is wood stock.
Based on this load data:
And the stress analysis, needed a fatter breech, contour diameter.
Steve
Here is a 550 magnum built for an Alaskan brown bear hunt. I designed the integral barrel a bit more stout in the breech, contour section but still fit into the B&C channel and after the forearm, it has a 2nd taper, almost straight to the muzzle, adding a bit more weight.
The chamber was to...
I had to replace my front sight on my 416 Rigby Dakota with one from NECG (talking with Dakota, that is factory). The dovetail was cut a bit narrow but was able to sand the bottom and sides to fit.
